How did we get downgraded from "genius thinkers" to "architects?"

Don't get me wrong... "architect" is a cool name (and probably a lot better for balancing INTP hubris)... but didn't INTPs used to be commonly referred to as "the genius thinker" the way INTJs are referred to as "mastermind?"

Something to remember here is that the title is not the definition.
The assignments of names such as "architect" and "guardian" do not replace the typological definitions, they are simply a placeholder implemented for some or other reason.

EDIT: Architect stated the reason.

It's always been that way. The nomenclature you're referring to is from David Keirsey (an INTP, who had an INTP son also named David Keirsey). In Personology (a thread is devoted to it here) he digs in deeper on the nomenclature. Keirsey (the elder, the younger was an AI guy) was a wordsmith. He obsessed about words, and felt that architectonic was more apt for the INTP than Mastermind.

And I agree. Though my coworkers once called me the Mastermind (not referencing MBTI) I also work as an actual software architect, and believe it's a far better term for the type. It's the difference between Te and Ti. Te (mastermind) seeks to order and control outer systems. Ti (the architect) seeks to order and control the inner world of idea, design and system.

I don't know where you get "genius thinkers" from, that's a whole another concept not applicable to MBTI. At best INTP's are "People who think a lot", but not necessarily good ones.

I'm not sure where I came across INTPs being assigned the "genius thinker" tagline... maybe I'm mistaken. It would have been a year or two ago. I agree that "architect" as a catchy nickname is more appropriate though.

This is the internet after all, too. Anyone could have put up a website with whatever nicknames they'd have wanted to. Doesn't mean the site where I saw that tagline was commonly referenced...

No, "Architect" was first documented in PUM - Please Understand Me back in the 70's. There was a world pre-internet after all.

Keirsey uses "Architect" as the INTP tagline

Aha. okay. That is also a rather wide description compared to the common understanding.

This I think is the most common use of the word. Could be an INTP or another type.
An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings.

I tend to look at this profile. As was mentioned;
The INTP is above all a thinker and his inner (private) world is a place governed by a strong sense of logical structure.
This is specific enough for me if one is to describe the INTP with few words. I get the impression this is a fairly agreed upon description.

Edit- The profile link mentions architect.
The INTP is sometimes referred to as the architect. The world is an object of study and possibilities for changing and shaping it according to the schemes assessed by the Ti core are derived from intuition. If his introversion is strong, however, then his schemes tend to remain private and speculative: the world remains an intellectual object of study but his architectural plans may not actually be put into practice. The constructor/inventor ENTP, on the other hand, with whom the Ne is dominant, aggressively grapples with and shapes the world, showing little reticence. The INTP is of the same spirit, but his constructive nature is likely to take shape within more private hobbies and less likely to directly involve others.
I see the profile is not quite on board with the term as description.
