I believe it's just genetics. Like physical appearances are based off genetics, personality type is as well.

I don't know if it's genetics. Your type (letter) preferences, from what I've read, are innate, due to the structure or the something-or-other of your brain; your eight functions are developed to the extent that they are because of the situations you've been in and they way you've responded to your environment. There are other people who know way more about this stuff then me, though.

I think i can safely say that its not genetics simply because when i was much younger i was extrovert and probably much more feeling. I craved attention when i was little as i never got any. Once fifth grade hit me though i was picked on for several reasons that really arent that important to name, but i believe the world hit me then. I was a sheltered little boy who had no friends to talk to. I lived far away from anyone untill i was 7 and then the neighbors i did get were so much younger or older it didnt matter. I attended the this pleasant little school with about 20 students per grade and then middle school with over a 1000 students all seeming against me. Dont get me wrong im not whinning or venting. Thats just what happened. I may be a lot more vengefull and angry at everything but im glad at who iv become as a result.

Nope, sorry Zezon, it's genetics.

Now.... I'm not a parent, but from what I hear children have stubborn personalities. No matter how similar upbringing can be, children will be their own persons, whatever that is.

INTPs need a warm loving environment to really develop their people-skills... if that environment, especially one with peers, was broken then it would explain your switch to more introversion. But you're still INTP, always have been, and in all possibilities of your life you will be. INTP is the clay of your personality- but like clay, you can still shape it differently.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Your personality is just like your physical appearance. You're born looking one way, but you can dye your hair and have cosmetic surgeries done to alter your appearance...or at least slightly...

Well, anyway, you can alter your personality more than you can alter your physical appearance. Yeah.

The MBTI represents the individual's temperament, essentially.

They're created in an evil laboratory by a mad scientist lusting for revenge on all the SJs of the world.

Seriously though, I think much of it is genetic. However, from there, I think the details are refined by upbringing. For instance, one's genetics, IMO, could produce quite a few different, but fairly similar types. Like, as an INTP, there's really no way I could've ever been an ESFJ. However, I think I could've very well been an INTJ or an ENTP, for example.

Of course it all varies on the degree of preference as well. An extreme introvert couldn't be an extrovert if you paid them. lol

From what i understand from reading Jung it is meant to be genetics. I remember he said that there are people born introverts into familys were being introverted is just not acceptable. These people act like extroverts but are extremly neurotic and once there grown up and independent from there family they become introverts and are happier.

If you imagine in your example zezon vice that you were born extroverted, you would just flambouyently interact with any person regardless of age and you would of got along with everyone better instead of being an outcast.

In this case you also need to remember that being introverted and extroverted is not just a social factor, the social factor is the effect of how introversion/extroversion works. Introverted/extroverted is about how you interact with and percieve objects. An extrovert branches out and trys to experience what each object has to offer and draws value primarily from objective reality. An introvert hides himself away and trys to protect himself from being influenced or dominated by the object and creates value subjectively, objective reality always comes second to a introvert.

This I find intriguing. Jung almost certainly intended genetics to be the root of our personalities/temperament, particularly NT, NF, SJ, and SP... I believe I may disagree with this part of his theory. When I was nine I could've related to every single description of a sensor that I had ever read, after several unfortunate events that threatened my concept of reality, I alternated to the complete opposite, now possessing everything that an intuitive is professed to be. It is my perception that our psyche is formed by external factors, including environment, and that we choose the traits that we prefer. Due to our personalities being what we prefer and believe, it is highly unlikely that we will choose to forgo them even when they may prove to be a burden, unless compelled because of extreme external situations.

I'm actually surprised that so many fellow INTP's are willing to refer back to the original concept as if it were proof. Jung was working with limited resources, there are bound to be a few indiscrepencies in his hypothesis.

I look to jung because he had many years of clinical experience, he has had literally thousands of patients so not just the few examples of people we can think of. Also to understand the theorie behind mbti to understand how it works.
How old were you when you changed away from an S type?

Ah the old Nature/Nurture debate, one of my favourites!

I'm pretty firmly in the nurture camp, as I believe it's more important... I think nature provides you with a "palette" of possibilities then nurture dictates which colours you choose...

Ah the old tired Nature versus Nuture debate.
Even if you had 100% Introvert genes, If you had to be extroverted to survive, you would become extroverted, and after a while, internalize those extroverted values, claim as your own for a sense of pride and personal dignity and then raise your offspring in the tradition of extroversion and within a few generations you would have the religion of extroversion, where the congregation might still be predominately introverted genetically, but the man-made institution of the ancestor required extroverted behavior...

The consensus on personality disorders is that they are symptomatic of behaviors that are considered quite normal at certain stages of developmental growth. However, for some reason those who suffer from P. D.s don't develop past a certain point, in a certain area of their personality.

It may be assumed that all differences in personality (MBTI types included) are due to the same process. There are some areas where it is easy to excel and other areas where it is difficult not to fail - when developing a social Identity. The main difference is that development is not halted at a certain level (as in the case of a personality disorder) but merely retarded for a relatively short time so that more or less "Well Rounded" personalities still exhibit quirks, eccentric-ness and weirdness on occasions.

The development of a social identity/personality is primarily a case of social adaptation, which of course there are genetic pre-dispositions as factors, but depending on the type of society or culture one deals with in, the personality varies, even when the genetics do not.

I was ten when I became iNtuitive.

I'm using my experience as a tool to explain the rationality behind what I believe is more probable, I still fully accept the plausibility of genetics.
I'm just not convinced yet.

^ I was a lot more S when I was a kid too. My artistic side didn't come out until I was 12, and before that, I was very anal about following the rules. However, I'm not sure if that's because I actually changed from S to N, or if it takes a while for kids to reveal their true nature.
