Hi..I'm a final year Mechanical Engineering student...currently appearing for my College Campus Recruitment Process.

We have three stages :
1) Aptitude+Technical Test
{short listing}
2) Group Discussion i.e. (GD)
{short listing}
3) Interviews

I do get though the first step, but Group discussion seems to be a problem for me...
Today I got rejected for the same(as earlier)...

I'd like to tell something more on todays GD session....

All I found today is that people were offtopic (relative to the topic given to us)...
I hardly spoke two points(but please note that they were worthy..not useless as some people did in the group..NOTE: I'm not exaggerating this...you can believe me blindly...the entire discussion was not linked to the main topic...but I never got time to process the vast amount of auditory info that was coming to me that time..and didn't realise to what extent the dicussion was offtopic {but that doesn't mean I wasn't aware that the discussion was offtopic at that point of time}.. )...

What is most shocking is that one of the examiners actually got up from his seat came up to me...stopped the discussion and asked me to speak something (I never expected this!...:eek:)...and then I spoke one useless point..(I suspect I made a big mistake here by saying-"Ya..I do have a point...bla bla"...I think I should have said-"No..I don't have anything to speak of now...but will definitely speak when I have a good point"...am I right??..if not please give me detailed info about this..)

So..all I want from you my friends is your valuable experience,suggestions,etc(what ever is linked to this)...
because the next company I'm appearing for is my MAIN TARGET...and the most important point..it also has a "Group discussion session"...if I don't get into this I'll definitely be having a hard time next year...

Please guide me as to what exactly a company wabts to find out about a candidate through a GD...especially for a mechanical engineer...

Guide me as to what exactly I should me doing in a GD(for mech engg)

I have searched the net a lot..I do have an idea as to what is a GD targeted at..
but I'm rather interested in the inputs from you guys(for obvious reasons)...
If any of you has been through such situations..plz tell me everything...your valuable suggestions can have great role in getting me the job I always wanted...(and it has a lot more things attached with this...)..

Thanks....
any comments are welcome...

If you're ever put in the position of being on the spot to make a point, it wouldn't hurt to emphasize the precise nature of your comments. Precision sometimes takes longer, but is often worth it.

You'll notice some people will make obvious statements, but do so in order for them to be noticed in the GD.

Don't feel pressured that you have to make a deep contribution - just throw out some suggestions. It's more to observe your interaction within a team environment rather than the content.

Also, it will depend on the role requirements. I was involved in a GD once, didn't say a word - but when was asked what hours I could work - I put down anything and they took me in immediately.

Good luck with the process!!!
