Hey,
I'm exploring Theravada buddhism and I find a number of things I agree with.

What got you interested in Zen? Any school of Zen in particular?

Theravada.. isn't that supposed to be based on the authentic scriptures written by the Buddha?

I kind of stumbled into Zen actually. I've always resonated with Japanese culture, and happened to read something about the Ensō symbol when researching Japan's cultural roots. The description of the soul as void had me hooked.. and a Wikipedia page-hopping spree ensued :D

I don't really consider myself religious, but so many concepts in Zen make sense to me (especially the Uncreated and Mushin mind). No particular school as of yet, but I'm still in the stages of taking in the topic as a whole.

Some are considered ancient and authentic, some are not recognised outside of Theravada.
My goal was to find buddhism for agnostics. So I found a school that ignores the religious aspects and focuses on philosophy and path to perfection.

Zen is often recommended as an intellectual approach to Buddhism, looks interesting and it seems many elements depend on the teacher and interpretation.

Page-hopping, I know that well :).

I am reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It is very powerful for me so far. i have been bale to adopt and utilize a lot of the techniques he presents.

@Blarraun - Buddhism for agnostics, how very intriguing! So by religious aspects, do you mean ritual and practice? Is it more of a general lifestyle that arises from certain axioms?

That's a lot of the way I see Zen, as a manifestation of mindset and lifestyle that comes from holding certain things as true. As you mention, though, the specific incarnation of Zen seems to take different forms depending on the school/teacher.

@SpaceYeti - heh, indeed ^^ Is there a certain type of food that brings out your inner zen more than others?

@Teffnology - ah, yes! The Power of Now is a great book. If I remember correctly, in it there are a lot of Eastern concepts combined with an interesting approach to psychological introspection. It's been a long while since I read it, but I remember that it was a significant part of what changed my thinking as I transitioned out of Christianity and into a more psychological/eclectic perspective on spirituality. What is your take on Tolle's view of the "Pain Body"?

I've not studied Zen/Mahayana Buddhism but I did a 10 day Vipassana course last year and sit with the local Tergar meditation group twice a month. Honestly, I've been running on too much adrenaline lately (work stuff) to log any real meditation time... But I highly recommend checking out the free/donation dhamma.org retreat centers if you're interested in Buddhism +/or meditation.

Oh, and welcome. :D

I just recently transitioned out of Christianity myself and Tolle really helped me a lot during that time. My athiest friend let me borrow it, he uses it for poker and life in general, and I have had been hiding it from him for about a year now. I will go back and reread ccertain parts and take pauses to try some of his techniques.

The pain body is an interesting concept but I don't think I fully grasp it enough to comment on it yet. But I really identified with alot of what he described in this section.

I need to pick it up again, he has such a calming informative tone.
