Ahhh! I still hear echoes of the accusation of lovers...

"DO YOU HAVE TO ANALYZE EVERYTHING!?"

My answer, in a confused tone of voice " Why Yes!, what else is there?"

It took me decades to answer that question for my self...
I do not know if I could provide an answer for anyone else for example, how does one know if one has thought too much? A little bell does not start ringing when one reaches the 'correct' amount of thought...

Bah Humbug! I think we live in a world where many see thinking as a bad habit that needs to be discouraged...

How do you respond to something like that?

As a child I did get told I think too much by my mother which seems like an entirely counterproductive thing to say to a child. If I had a child I would tell them to think more. I really can not comprehend how someone could have the opinion that a person thinks too much since it almost always has negative connotations when someone says that and I don't understand how that is a negative.

Being a child I really don't remember what my response was.

I do currently get told I'm over thinking things quite often which could be basically the same principle as "you think too much". To this my answers is usually an equally annoying "I'm sorry."

If you haven't been told you think too much, well, you're probably not INTP.

So, I'm the only dumb/braindead person here? How depressing.

Or...

I'll just tell you I've got it completely figured out. :D No need to think when you know everything already.

( Oh, and people will dislike it if you think too little, as well as too much. Mostly because you forget stuff and they end up doing work for you, though. )

What a beautiful laugh you have, Jennywocky!

I get told this all the time. Thinking is a great pleasure, and people who say that are out of their minds. I've been known to tell them so, or more often just shake my head sadly and continue as if they had not spoken. It happens often enough that I think of it as just something people say, like, "How's it goin'?"

I've always considered this statement a joke in itself. As if the first person to say it saw the flaws in it's logic and loved the irony of a phrase seeming to disguise itself as a piece of wisdom when really it was just the person not being able to answer someone's questions or follow what they were thinking.

Despite what I just said. I actually believe in a concept of "thinking too much". I mean don't get me wrong, I love thinking, it's awesome, do it all the time. However, in some respect I see this saying as a way to tell you "Whoa, you need to calm down" or something along those lines, which is a reasonable statement in my eyes.

I do currently get told I'm over thinking things quite often which could be basically the same principle as "you think too much". To this my answers is usually an equally annoying "I'm sorry."

I think the words "you think too much" and "you're over-thinking it" are completely different. When I hear the phrase "you're over-thinking it" it means I'm doing something (oh lets say a math problem) and I overlook the obvious way to go and dismiss it as too simple subconsciously so end up going in the wrong direction of thought for about 10 minutes when all along the problem was extremely simpler than I was making it out to be.

Actually, sometimes I'm the one telling myself I think too much. When you are surrounded by people who see thinking as negative you begin to feel the same way. Luckily, when I find myself alone again I go back into believing thinking is good.

About the over-thinking thing, I'm with Irishpenguin. I too go through that often.

I generally ignore the comment and continue to think. Or I retort that the other party does not think enough.

Haha, somehow I skipped over this post earlier. Over-logic-ing. Awesome. :D

I will add that to my repertoire of cool phrases.

I have many friends now who tell me I am over-thinking things, it often happens when I work in groups, and everyone expects me to do all the thinking, and then they begin chatting amongst themselves while I am still there.

I rarely hear "you think too much" mostly because I have surrounded myself with other thinkers, and because I tend to hide my thinking till I am alone.

If this were a poll on how many times instead of a question of if, I'd have to answer 'Countless'.

I've indeed been told this a lot too, mostly, because, anything I think up, even stuff I know is beyond necessity, I concoct a logical explanation, such as the backstory of a short story of mine, where I had to explain why one planetoid in a trinary system emerged as a Metropolis, another as an Arcane Medieval setting, and another as a fog-obstructed, despotic, information sensoring world, which most people already thought was too much, before I came up with anthropological explanations for their circumstances.

I've definitely heard variations of it quite a bit. Sometimes I get so deep in thought mode that it literally gives me these weird headaches that only exercise or music can alleviate. So, in a weird way, I sometimes have to tell myself I think too much.

The good thing is that my thinking is alot more enjoyable now than when I was younger. My intution and sense of humor is way more developed than before so my thoughts not only entertain me more often, they can even entertain others. I used to overthink myself sick, now I think myself to feel better more often than not.

But yeah, I've been told I analyze too much, or that I go a little too deep into a topic. I usually roll my eyes at this, but there are times I wish I could stop analyzing for a moment. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with my Ti.

My dad's an INTP too, but he finds occasion to accuse me of "analysis paralysis" relatively often. ^_^

I've been told by my programming teacher (I'm only in an intro to C++ class atm, actually... And hating our current chapter: pointers) more than once that I operate at a 'higher logic' and that without excessive commenting most people wouldn't be able to follow my code.

This actually makes little sense to me, since I had this preconception before going into programming that it was a field of people with, well, "higher logic". She says this because I prefer to find shorter ways of doing things which to me aren't even a "higher logic" just a "common sense alternatives".

You're not thinking enough.

:smiley_emoticons_mr

Until somebody can prove me wrong, I'm going to keep believing that humming tunelessly is a perfectly acceptable replacement for thought. :p

So no, I won't be joining the dark side.

Don't you love it when you're in an argument or conversation and the other person says something like "You've thought way too much about this" or "You're thinking too hard about it."
Especially when in fact you haven't thought about it up until that moment.

On a serious note though, I do think it's very important to cultivate your sense of feeling sometimes, and let the thinking rest. All of these unhappy INTPs on this forum find themselves in holes of isolation, depression, anxiety... and I promise it's because we do think "too much."
The way I look at it, life itself is an unsolvable mystery, and no analysis is ever going to truely satisfy me. However, we have all of these senses to experience and appreciate, why should we ignore them? I hate to say it, but all of the really heavy thinking I've done lately has been a repeat of past thoughts that I'd forgotten. It always comes down to the same final conclusion: "There is no answer."

Personally, I love to just sit, with all of my attention put into enjoying some music, painting, or both. Meditation is an excellent practice, if you just focus on observing your senses. Hanging around with very feeling-oriented girls helps too, if you can avoid irritating them.

Bravo. My point of view exactly. If I'm feeling depressed, The best help tends to be to go do something entirely unrelated that occupies my mind. Music, hiking, loving, maybe turning on the TV. Every once and awhile, It's refreshing to shut off the analyzer for a bit and stop to smell the roses.

Feeling oriented girls can be very helpful, except that in highschool at least, they tend to carry an entourage of other girls who negate their usefulness. Is the same true post-highschool?

As for myself, I've have been told numerous times that I think to much, sometimes others will tell me that I'm over-thinking, and sometimes I catch myself over-thinking certain things. I struggled with algebra for awhile because (when I could keep myself on-task) I was always testing it, to see if I could find shortcuts, or better ways to solve the problems listed in the book.

I don't disagree, but I also think there's something to be said for feeling too much - in the INTPs case, having an over-zealous Fe. When I do feel things, I feel them very strongly; I have a fairly strong Fe shadow (and I am/have been depressive). And I've noticed the people on here with dark/depressive tendencies seem to have a similar thing. But... perhaps an unrestrained Fe such as in my case is actually a result of too much Ti, and as a result, the Fe shadow increases in power.

I know what you mean. For me, it's almost a defensive function to overdrive my thinking ability... which ends up snapping back into overwhelming emotion.
