The hangover movies we shit. I couldn't bring myself to suspend my disbelief to even come close to being able to go along with it's story. When other's saw a light-hearted comedy about going through fubar experiences within the confines and security of their own homes I saw protagonists that were so mentally challenged that they would have genuine justifications to kill themselves. I should clarify my hate with regards to the movies are towards the frictional settings, characters and everything else, not any of the people involved.

Beyond the movie and into what it symbolizes however, I can't be the only one who doesn't like this YOLO-esque intentionally do stupid shit and hilarity ensures crap. In fact I don't think it's the movie so much as the culture it represents that bothers me so much. I feel a lot of animosity to the YOLO/jackass-esque lifestyle/mindset maybe cause it preaches the abandonment of all that is Ti and revelling in the chaos of Se.

At the time I watched the movie if most of the people, I was around, didn't like the movie they at least condoned it, though their silence or, that's how I saw it anyway. It occurs to me that maybe I disliked the movie so much because it is an embodiment of the same quality that I hate about the people around me.

Anyway please express your agreement! Validate me please! or join the dark side with the Se numb skulls and prepare for a conflict of galactic scale.
Or express your own hatred for a movie from the depths of your soul. It doesn't even have to be a movie it can be anything in Arts and Entertainment.

Well, for the warm-n-fuzzy LOLs, I'll simply note that I saw the first Hangover (at home, probably as a redbox $1 DVD rental) just out of curiosity and I wasn't inspired to bother with the sequels. In fact, I can barely remember anything about the movie (= the pic is unmemorable and essentially irrelevant). Oh wait, I think some guy lost a tooth... And didn't someone get locked in a trunk or something? Hmmm...

But really, is this new? Starting with Porky's 1-5 in the 70's and onwards, the cinematic junkyard is littered with the insalubrious junk carbs of vapid flicks with dubious ability to entertain. (Except of course The Hangover was profitable enough to result in two sequels of declining quality.)

I don't know. Occasionally I'll see stupid movies that aren't really that great but still provide some amusing sequences (like Dumb and Dumber, or Ace Ventura).

Did you ever watch any of the Jackass movies? I don't know why I did. I'm partly like, "God, these guys are stupid"... and yet I keep watching just to see what will happen next. Those guys are never fazed out by any bad outcomes, they just keep on going. [I even watched Bad Grandpa straight through.]

PS. I apologize in advance for the member who invariably will be pissed that I insulted Porky's 4.

Oddly enough the hangover, can't even be arsed to caps it's title, is up there on my list of movies I should never have wasted my eyeballs on.

I agree. I can't get the hang of stupid YOLO humor either. It's all mindless, senseless, desensitizing, and antisocial. Though I'd add things like Punk'd and "fail" compilations to this catergory.

Also disturbing, is the popularity of other sadistic humor like "Anger Management" and "Meet the Parents". Why is torment so amusing to so many people?

I was first going to write that I fully agree with you (OP), but then I started (in true INTP-fashion) read about the dichotomy of the Apollonian and the Dionysian as it is presented by Nietzsche (sorry for the philosophical namedropping). For those who don't know, the Apollonian represents an analytical and reason-based outlook on life while the Dionysian is embracing chaos and experience, in line with the YOLO-pinciple. Nietzsche thought that the Apollonian sought to negate life through reason, a sort of a general negative attitude to life, while the Dionysian was an affirmative stance. Anyway, there are probably other people who could analyse the Hangover in terms of this dichotomy much better than me, but it is definitely interesting in this context.

A movie I recently truly hated was The Imitation Game. At first they present Turing as a kind of an arrogant genius-type who loves math etc. As the story unfolds, it becomes more and more clear that the apparent arrogant personality is just a facade for a lonely and miserable nerd who escaped into math and reason because he could never get friends etc. At the end of the movie, he is left alone with his machine and his math, miserable and depressed.

So apparently, the moral of the film was that geniuses are passionate about nerdy stuff only because they are pathetic nerds who can't get friends, and that their highest wish is to become 'normal', like everybody else. I got quite angry at this old idiotic cliche. A lot of people are passionate about 'nerdy' things because, quite simply, they have passion for the subjects. And quite possibly, the last thing they would want is to become "normal"

Ugh, I was hoping Imitation Game would be good, because it portrayed a famous and impactful INTP, but after reading that, wow. Then again people who hire Benedict Cumberbatch to represent an INTP usually end up making him a lonely nerd whose logic isn't explained and is somehow magical. Case in point BBC's Sherlock. Smart character, not so smart writer.

Haven't seen The Imitation Game, but it makes The Theory of Everything sounds like a Polyanna story. Stephen and Jane have a rough go of things when his disease is diagnosed and he starts his inevitable decline, but the whole thing seems more positive / uplifting. Hawking's personality is embraced and never really apologized for; both of them come off decently, and the movie ends on a positive note.

Just tried to watch "If I Stay" on NetFlix. The idea seemed like it had dramatic potential, but gaaaa, it was like watching Lifetime Channel for 13-year-old girls and the execution wasn't good. I watched a bit, then just read the synopsis and watched the ending. If they had had balls, they would have made the dilemma more excruciating by having her be paralyzed or something; as it was, the dilemma wasn't much of a dilemma.

Can't wait until my copy of Angel Heart comes in.

I remembered my brother-in-law played the third movie for us to watch. I kindly but firmly told him that we need to watch another non-Hangover movie.

There was one thing I liked about hangover: Alan.

While not a terrifyingly complex or deep character, his psyche was entertaining and broken enough to elicit interest.
The rest of it was just your standard "luagh at us" circle-jerk shite.

Yea a bunch of shenanigans. It's got the same vibe as watching teenagers trying to outdo each other at stupid stuff to impress their peers.

No its not new, but I was more just against how much the movie was celebrated when it came out, and it still has 7.8 rating on IMDB, in comparison to Porky's which only got a 6.1, highest of the series.

I don't know. Occasionally I'll see stupid movies that aren't really that great but still provide some amusing sequences (like Dumb and Dumber, or Ace Ventura).

Yea I was having the same thought when I wrote the op, and I did try to express a more moderate view while keeping the hate. I've actually liked many movies based on stupid characters and premises. Jim Carry movies and the Scary movies series to name a few. They do need to be of a pretty good quality though.

I don't know I fundamentally didn't even agree with the principle of the movie which was saying something along the lines of "living your life is more important than worrying about making stupid mistakes because most things will turn out alright". That might actually sound alright, but accompanied with heavy drinking, it ended up with one of the protagonists in the movie getting the Mike Tyson facial tattoo, stealing money from his students, losing his front tooth and getting married to a prostitute.

Did you ever watch any of the Jackass movies? I don't know why I did. I'm partly like, "God, these guys are stupid"... and yet I keep watching just to see what will happen next. I haven't watched the Jackass movies or Bad Grandpa, I guess I'll avoid those. I donno I'm not even against using stupid shit for humor like Jackass. I just don't appreciate movies or anything blatantly telling people mixing up stupid shit as a major aspect of your life is OK.

I don't like most things that are cringe inducing cause I find myself empathizing and it becomes painful to watch. The show or whatever it is has to be handled well so it's tolerate-able.

I don't know those shows you've mentioned can feel a bit painful to watch but I can see how they work. The best way I can explain it is that the laughs are not really directed at the tormented but at how bizarre and surreal the situations themselves are.

Have you seen Louis CK tv show Louie? That show uses awkward and cringe-worthy moments heavily but I love it. I think it does a great job of illustrating this sort of humor.

This sounds to me like the Ti vs Se perspectives I talked about. It could be argued that Ti can be an affirmative stance, but generally I see the YOLO-esque perspective wholly discarding Ti critical analysis; rather than coming with an opposing view by using Ti to create an affirmative stance made up of arguments for the relevant actions.

I'm a little bit hesitant to mention my hated movie due to it having consistently high reviews on various sources, but I will says it's 'Furious 7'. I wanted to give up on the movie every 5 minutes but felt obliged to watch it; otherwise feeling I wasted $6 renting it (which was nonsensical because I was going to feel that way regardless). For some reason they tried to make a villain menacing by making sure he appeared in almost every scene just to attack the protagonists.

I feel like this movie was the James Bond equivalent of 'Die another day' - it just threw reality out the door in an attempt to be 'bigger and better' than its predecessor. I feel like the majority of reviews for that movie are out of pity for the circumstances surrounding Paul Walker and not the movie itself. It really grinds my gears to see reviews that don't actually review the source material itself; especially the book reviews on amazon.com that criticise the author's themselves and not the material.

I've only seen the first of the series, but it seems okay for what it is. A rather mindless attempt at humour. Maybe it resonated with me on some level as I was feeling the loss of my youth at about the time I watched it.

@RaBind

When I first starting reading this I couldn't help but assume you were watching the film through some sort of biased moral/philosophical lens. Then you come out with statements such "and getting married to a prostitute". Part of the point of the film was the total bitchiness of Stu's girlfriend.

Then again this could all be a symptom of my issue with seeing your post through a moral/philosophical lens.

Did it help recover your youth? or at least make you feel like it did?

Yeah I'm quite sure a lot of it has to do simply with my taste in movies. I find that I dislike a lot of light heated feel good movies simply cause they don't occupy my mind and give me something that I will keep thinking back to for a couple of days.

I get that the part about "getting married to a prostitute" was part of a joke, but it just feels like the jokes didn't mix together well with the point they're trying to make. It seems to me that the same point they're trying to get across is what got them in the fubar situation in the first place and is the predicament, which they find themselves in, that the movie is about. An example of a point conveyed better in a comedy movie is Click, where the point they're trying to make is directly related to, and could've been used to prevent, the problems the protagonist faces.

It didn't help recover my youth but it enabled me to better relate to a few of the characters.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it in hindsight but it seemed to be a limited commentary on the fucked nature of modern society and how image driven it is.

Mindwalk, the most shit movie ever. It's hard to pretend it's worth words. Don't view this. Or do. It's really worthwhile to know how shit things can be.

Before watching this movie THD was telling me about the holistic perspective in some thread and I didn't quite get it, this movie actually made it click in for me. Though if you've already read up on what they talk about a lot of the movie would probably be redundant and unnecessarily verbose.

another film i seriously hate is russian ark. it was filmed in one-shot...so what? i cant see that as anything more than a cheap and unnecessary gimmick. it does not do what it claims to set out to do. the eccentric/sarcastic/whatever "academic" conversation between the french tour guide and the narrator was unbearable. honestly made my blood boil. the film was nothing more than a pretentious costume fest+long shots of paintings

Chris Marker's film 'Level 42' pissed me off for similar reasons. I raged so much at the pretentiousness of the narrator's voice in that film that I had to stop half-way through and come back to it (I have a love-hate relationship with the French accent though it has to be said). Strange as I really liked his other two films I've seen, Sans Soileil & La Jette, though you have to be in the mood for them.

Could name too many films I don't like otherwise: I love the medium itself but can't stand the crass commercialism that characterises most films. I'm very picky. :o

At least Andy Warhol eating a burger had the decency to only be a few minutes long. :D

Objects in the mirror might look closer than they
why not a greatest movies ever? or greatest movies that no one know ever or something similar?

Anyway, i kinda hated avatar, for it was some expensive futurist version of pocahontas with a less appealing soundtrack. And didn't actually enjoy it.
I didn't like Big Fish, its ambience was like stupid. hard to describe how nauseating it is.
I don't think i hated it but The Wind Rises by studio gibhili was a big dissapointment.
Diary of an adolescent zombie. Probably one of the worst ever, i didn't got to see the ending. 30 minutes was already enough.

Independence Day. Maybe it's not this movie in particular as many have a similar theme but the whole notion of American supremacy and how we saved the world makes me puke patriotism.

Tried to watch Hollow Man, an old "invisible man" flick starring kevin Bacon, since it was free on HBO this month. It was crap. I turned it off about twenty minutes in, or or however it long it took for him to break all the rules of an actual science study and inject himself with the formula, then start sexually harassing his female colleagues with his newfound powers. It wasn't even an insightful psychology study of a scientist going nuts; it was just "arrogant moron does something stupid, then acts like a dickhead."

Compare that to Goldblum in "The Fly," which was far better even if Seth Brundle (the scientist) is also flawed.

I ended up just laughing at the absurdity of it, it was so over-the-top that way. i guess it's one or the other.... laugh or puke. But I didn't get the impression that movie took itself that seriously either.

Oh, i sat wondering why THD sent me this VM:

"Your deepest thoughts and feelings were exposed to a large audience and everyone thinks you're pathetic and unoriginal."

Now it's explained. He's ashamed for having liked such a dull, pretentious, pseudo-intellectual non-movie. Then something something psychology etc ergo pissed off ergo ooo omniscient judge.

THANK YOU!

I've said as much to people, and I get the stupidest looks. Then I explain that it's just another "Funny-colored, but noble savages are rescued by an open-minded white guy from the other, more technologically advanced white guys, and in turn, he is released from his inner-demons," and the response is usually, ".... you mean you didn't like Dances with Wolves?" Close enough.
