I'm trying to get into metal but I don't know where to go from here. I know I like Iron Maiden, Metallica (mainly Ride The Lightning), In Flames, Mare Cognitum, Rhapsody of Fire/Rhapsody/Luca Turilli's Wet Dream, Blind Guardian, and Trivium, but I'd appreciate any suggestions of related groups.

It's quite easy to find similar bands in a genre, that's what it's meant to encompass.

Nowadays I grew bored of most metal. I like to listen to purely/mostly instrumental; neo-classical, indie, virtuoso or prog from time to time.
Like these:

From standard heavy metal, I'd say Van Canto is worth a try, they're a german band replacing all instruments except drums with voice, to great effect.
They've made many covers from the ones you mention, here's one example:

Metal is one of if not the most diverse genres. It's got extremes in every category, and this makes being a fan of metal sort of difficult to qualify, since most people like *some* metal, but hate others.

It helps to articulate the elements of metal that you enjoy, then ask for those particular things. Or even better, rule out the ones that you don't like.

Preferences might include:
- Technical play (dreamtheatre) vs. simplicity (static X)
- Singing (dragonforce) vs growling (cannibal corpse) vs. screaming (suicide silence)
- Theatrics style (slipknot vs. cradle of filth vs. devin townsend project)
- Fast (dragonforce) vs. moderate (parkway drive) vs. really slow (doom and sludge metal)
- Genre influences
- Linearity (is it close to heavy rock, or is it math metal?)
- Dense (strapping young lad) vs. 'thin' sounding (lacuna coil?)
- Do you have a preferred gender of vocalist?
- Is it even important to have a vocalist?
- How novel a sound are you after?
- Are there themes that you are not interested in (satanism, gore, rape for example)
- Do you care about how hardcore the music you listen to makes you seem? (There are some bands that are taboo if this is the case)

So once you know what you prefer, choose what things are valued, acceptable, and unacceptable. Then people can give you rundowns easily ;)

For example, I find almost everything acceptable, though get bored by too much growling in anything that's invariably slow. Most popular metal bands are a little linear, so I've got a pretty strong preference for newer more progressive or extreme sounds. Theatrics doesn't matter too much, but it's a little disengaging if they take those theatrics too seriously. I don't mind the gender or even existence of the singer, but can't stand specific vocal styles such as those of Mic Patton, Rody Walker, and most power metal and Nu metal vocalists, for differing reasons.

I guess the problem with just asking open endedly is that most people that enjoy metal are just waiting to palm off their highly specific pet group, which is rarely helpful for people just generally getting into it, since a lot of it comes across too severe. You listed bands you already know you like, so that's a pretty decent place to start.

I'd recommend:
Slayer - Oldie thrash metal

Lamb of God - Solid Groove Metal with understandable vocals

Opeth - Progressive Death Metal

Arch Enemy - Melodic Death Metal (with non-token female vocalist)

Slipknot - Nu metal (hip hop influenced metal)

Tool - Progressive rock

Amon Amarth - Accessible Viking Themed Death Metal

Swallow the Sun - Melodic Doom Metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd6dG4nnJFg

Meshuggah - Djent
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc

Born of Osiris - Modern Djent

I don't even like some of these, but I consider them sort of 'pure', in that they're about as clear and inoffensive an example of a genre you're going to get while still accurately representing it. Hopefully you'll more easily be able to isolate the elements you like and dislike from these.

Sorry, but I have to recommend these guys because Hado didn't mention them out of the great list he had and I think these guys deserve some credit:

This particular album, which is done very well, is a concept album based on the novel 'Moby Dick". In fact, I think all their albums are concept albums, so there's that.

Rattenfänger (DM side project of Drudkh)
Iniquity (danish DM, recommend album "Serenadium")
Gorguts (very Te-dom-esque music, but unique and well worth checking out)

Testament (best thrash band)
Nuclear Assault (also great)
Aggressive (colombian super pissed off thrash)

Shining is a periodically excellent but uneven and frequently cringey BM band from which i recommend certain songs like "Livets ändhållplats"

Lots of great music around

i don't really care about genres and don't understand them well.
i get turned on by stuff that seems unique to me at the time.

i like some records from tiamat, dornenreich, burzum.

i grew up with sepultura

occasionally i like songs from austere, alcest, amesoeurs, dopamine, heretoir, agalloch, colaris, urfaust, summoning

sometimes i like to think that i'm a viking.
like the mini-me of techo viking :ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu7LCFCYm8Y

and i like metal remixes of pop songs :D or of electronic or rap ...

Metal is best experienced live. Get out into your local scene and find out what works for you, then chat to the bands you liked to find out which bands they like. No doubt some 'great' names will be dropped in this process and you can build up a vocabulary to describe your own tastes but in the end it's the show that matters, not the name of the band.

Best metal experience I've ever had:
When I saw Cult of Luna they played with two drummers. Whole crowd in a trance. Just devastating.
