Graphene, too good to be true?

Outrageous claims, but I have heard good things about graphene from several trusted sources so now I'm wondering where is the line between the breakthrough and the bullshit?

A filter that lets nothing but clean drinking water through sounds like bullshit to me, H2O is a small molecule but not the smallest.

I've heard about it before, but only that it is super light and strong. It feels as if they are over-selling it, my bullshit alarm is going off, but I think it's just over-sensitive to the 'but wait there's more!' mentality.

Are there any important substances that are smaller than water? By important I mean pertinent to health that can be dissolved in water :P

Dunno, not my thing :D

I'm excited to hear anything about more powerful processors or longer lasting batteries but I've learnt to be skeptical of anything that hasn't been rigorously proven, I think there's a lot of people who go through university and come out over specialised in overpopulated fields, ending up with useless qualifications because they didn't realise being qualified doesn't guarantee you a job. So they try to make use of their qualifications and the harder it is to do so the more disreputable they're willing to become, making outrageous claims in hope of attracting funding from investors who want to be the first in on the next big thing.

Dangerous substances can also be suspended in water; non-polar substances can therefore also be mixed with it.

Substances that can pass a graphene filter include:
--Conservatively, any single atom that is smaller than oxygen, which would include Hydrogen (acidifies water) Helium, Lithium (toxic and acidifices water) Beryllium (toxic) Boron (toxic) Carbon (makes water acidic) and Nitrogen.
--Liberally, any particle that is smaller than water, e.g., HF, which is also known as hyrofluoric acid when dissolved in water (granted, HF disassociates in water, but work with me).

graphine was proposed years ago. its been "cutting edge" technology that is "on the horizon" for years.

Let's be honest - science has been in a virtual standstill since Tesla. Tesla figured out alternating current, remote control, x rays etc and, reputedly, free energy. This is back when people used horses and carriages.

The people in the world who have a lot of money like the lifestyle and power they get from having a lot of money, and so are very motivated to make sure that no technology is produced meaningfully that will ever upset their advantage over everyone else, resulting in a scientific standstill.

So imo, there are fabulous technologies that have been invented, that are sitting on some shelf in a dark room underground somewhere, that no one is allowed to see.

If you were born within this time, then you are used to virtually zero technological change, and so for you, the idea that substances exist that do awesomely useful stuff are in the realm of fantasy and science fiction - which explains your disbelief.

If on the other hand, you were familiar with what is actually possible, then not only do you accept that things like graphene can do what they are purported to do, but you think that it is a little bit obvious.

I mean, if you ask the average person if free energy is possible, they say "of course not". They even teach that in schools. Then, you read things like this, and you start thinking "hang on a minute..." http://peswiki.com/energy/Directory:Inventors

If tesla could figure out remote control, alternating current etc back when people were riding horses around, then doesn't it seem a tad...odd...that all we have done since then is redesign the shape of his devices to look like a new iphone? Was this guy so godlike that he figured everything out that could ever be figured out, and that's it? Or is something else going on?

Well, I have to say that I couldn't disagree more with the idea that science has been at a standstill since Tesla, may I remind you how amazing the concept of a website is? ;) It's an example that works on many levels, from the unimaginably numerous and minuscule transistors (which, themselves, are post-Tesla breakthroughs) in the server, right through to the speed and distance that the signals travel, all while scarcely dropping a packet! And to think that it's performed so effortlessly by the systems that we never have to stop and marvel at it.

And hey, did we go to the moon in a scientific standstill? Nikola Tesla was a great man, but there have been many nameless Teslas since, and discovery never stops.

Sure, we went to the moon in a rocket propulsion engine, 50 years after Keeley floated around on his sympathetically vibrating platform, that traveled at several thousand miles per hour.

Sure, we have internet broadcast with low packet loss, after Tesla figured out how to transmit the same broadband through the Earth circa 1900.

Sure, we have new lithium ion batteries for our smartphones, a century after Tesla figured out how to broadcast electricity wirelessly.

Sure, we have excellent new chemotherapeutic drugs that save 5% of patients, 70 years after (I forget his name, Asian guy) cured 100% of his patients via the use of radio frequency.

Did I say standstill? I was being generous. I should have said "going backwards".

JG, how can you be so adamant and yet so wrong?

I'm not going to argue with you, there's no argument to be had, you're an idiot plain as day (cry foul to the mods if you think I'm being unfair) but I'm curious about where this comes from, I mean stupidity itself I can understand, but you're stupid and proud of it and I can't believe anyone could be just that damn stupid.

Do you practice, are you training for the special Olympics?

Aren't you the guy who made a thread saying that the world hated him because his computer wasn't working, and only noticed after a couple of hours that he had forgotten to plug them in?

That was you, right?

...then you call me an idiot?

:ahh:

Oh. My. Gawd.

What a fool I am, not realising a SATA cord doesn't convey power like a USB cord or that there was another port in the upper underside of the case that I hadn't seen, I am so ashamed, so utterly appalled, it's almost as if I thought the moon was the perfect size to cause the eclipse.

Almost ;)

That still cracks me up btw.

I see a temp ban in the near future. :D

I remember hearing about this stuff a few months ago. It seemed too good to be true. The water filtering thing seems like total bull shit. But I wonder about the other uses. I had it introduced to me as a cheap and effective solar panel material. Living in Arizona, that would be amazing. The two power companies wouldn't like it though. One tried to make people that use solar panels on their house pay extra. Bastards! They said, "They need to pay their fair share."

But potential use in air planes could be really kool too. Or hybrid, solar, jet fuel, planes.

It is, you idiot. That is why solar eclipses work out perfectly, which is why scientists who study the sun always wait for solar eclipses, because the moon blocks out everything except the corona.

Not only are you disasterously wrong, but you call other people stupid.

Serious question: do you like the smell of paint?

I reckon it's somewhere just before the peak.

It is said that the ability to do something well is needed to assess how well you are doing it. One needs reason to argue and to asses how well one can argue.
