We are exchanging gifts at school and I have to get a gift for an INTP. We aren't really close as he is a very reserved person, but he often writes to me and we talk and share some kind of a connection. I'd really like to make him feel pleased, so I don't want to buy anything cheesy-christmasy. What about a CD of some band he likes? Or do INTP's find such gifts worthless? Also, to put my heart into it, I could make him a dream catcher. He is a bit hipsterish, so I thought maybe it would be a nice handmade addition to the gift. What do you INTP's think?

Something handmade, like the dreamcatcher may be nice. Also, I can't imagine anyone going wrong with a large, picture-heavy reference book. Something like "Blue Planet", "A Tolkien Bestiary" or if he's a hipster, "Mustaches of North America" (I made that one up, but I'm sure something like that exists).

Here are what i would like to receive as a gift:
1. Electronics. a new mouse maybe
2. Clothes. It's very difficult to shop for clothes for me. As a matter of fact, I've never done it alone. Always received my cloths as gift or someone else forced me to buy them. Just make sure it's simple because i wouldn't wear anything that stands out.
3. Books. I wouldn't mind random science/history related books.
4. Anything really.. It doesn't really have to have practical value, if i don't have it already, I'll find a use for it.
I wouldn't find any gift worthless because someone took their time to buy it for me. The person in question may or may not be different

I am pretty sure s/he meant "clothes". I enjoy DIY projects, but making my own clothes from cloths would just feel tedious and pointless.

Electronics are cool. Not sure how well you know the person, but maybe he would like DIY electronics kit? Or some other thing that you have to figure out and it would engage his mind in a new way. Might want to ask him first and see what interests hold him.

Nah, I would enjoy a diverse collection of cloths.
Like Henry VIII's ass wipes. That might be cool.

Hmm, wiping one's ass with silk cloths. Sounds like a bad idea for a gift- what if the guy gets addicted?

How old is he? My dad was an INTJ and for every Christmas/birthday, we basically exchanged books, media, and interesting puzzle-ish things you might find at Barnes and Noble. It was good times.

This is a cool thread. I'm very polite and thank people when they give me stuff, but 90% of what I get is trash to me. The other 10% is books. If the book is good my respect for the person goes up.

give him a blowjob

How the hell is a an avatar like yours legal in the forum? God damn it.

That said, your suggestion is by far the best. It is one of the few things most men want and can't get.

I would say that a nice, thorough, unusual, somewhat specific non-fiction book about anything would be a safer bet than a fictional book. Maybe a book about nature, electronics, or a historical figure? *shrug* I'm sure he'd be very grateful for the dream catcher too though if that's what you think he would enjoy.

But it seems hard to go wrong with a book. Maybe a book about dream analysis? There are tons of wonderful, inexpensive books on dream psychology. The only time I wasn't happy to receive a book was when it was extremely, extremely mainstream pop with no reason for me to read it (like to understand my friend's preferences better or to share a conversation), or when it was an overly simple book about a topic I'd been studying in depth.

Alcohol. Perhaps special ones, that are made by inland farmers in Slovenia. Or rare old whiskey, no name, smuggled and tapped on non labeled bottles, preferably, the last bottle in existence.

Something interesting I don't think INTPs are interested in materialistic shit unless it is complex and simple at the same time... It doesn't take much to entertain us honestly...

I was going to say the same thing. A couple people asked me, and I said I don't want anything.

Then on second thought, I said a night out with someone that I like and trust.

Then I thought some more, and said if it has to be something materialistic, I like stuff that has many uses, and has a capacity for ingenuity.

Scientific instruments like telescopes and microscopes. The more complex it is, the more it will be appreciated.

I know a (probably) INTP banker that became giddy like a child when my friend gave him a simple microscope.

I may not be typical of other INTPs in this regard. But, generally, when people give me books or music, they give me books or music that they think I'll like, and they're almost always wrong.

For people who really want to give me a book or music, an Amazon gift card is a much better gift. I get what I want (and if someone says "Use this to get yourself a book or some music," I probably will), and I think of it as a gift from that person.

Agreed. I typically just ASK for what I want around the gift-giving seasons. If I can't think of anything, I'll ask for money. Assuming, though, that you intend to buy a THOUGHTFUL gift, start from your friend's interests and extrapolate forward from there. Be careful, though. A handpicked gift can be a bit of a minefield for your friend. They either get something they like or they get something they DON'T like but are expected to ACT like they like for fear of being perceived as ungrateful. Also, be sure you understand your friends ACTUAL interests, not their NOMINAL interests. If they say they like books, or music, or video games, that tells you basically nothing. Dig deep, ask for details.
