Hello, I've been wondering if anyone has successfully mapped the MBTI system into a functional graph where one's personality can be pin-pointed on.

I suppose that each of the letters could be considered as four axes, with E & I, N & S, T & F, and J & P as poles for each of the axes, respectively. Although, this would create a four-dimensional graph and probably not ideal for the sake of something readily useful.

Alternatively, from the perspective of Jungian Functions, The eight functions could be transcribed to the poles of a 3D graph forming a cube, With Sensing <-> Intuition as the X-axis, Thinking <-> Feeling as the Y-axis, and Introverted <-> Extroverted as the Z-axis.

This brings up a question of whether the functions are discrete entities or if there is a continuum between them e.g. from Ti to Fi.

As discrete things, you could make 4 graphs for each of the function pairs, e.g. Ti/Fe and Ne/Si for INTP, then a scale for intro/extraversion and a scale for how strong the lower functions are compared to the higher ones.

It would make more sense to think of them as a continuum, or as directions, like on a compass. That way only one graph would potentially be necessary for the entire system.

I've highlighted the functions of an INTP on this one for example:

The distance of each dot from the zero point could be adjusted to reflect the characterization of that function in an INTP, and so I guess an area of INTPness could be defined on the graph, but I don't feel like doing all that in mspaint right now.

The interesting thing about this approach is that you also get intersections like SF which don't have any place in typology theory that I've come across.

How would the continuum work though?

Is there ambiverted thinking, introverted feeling/thinking hybrid?

I was wondering about that, too. Like INTP, could the functions themselves also just be archetypal behavior, where a realistic person isn't always exhibiting them to a T? And perhaps the enumerated functions are only so because of Jung's personal bias.

The bias in any of this, of course, is that conscious systematic delineation of any sort belongs in the category of thought. We can think about internal things and external things, but is the act of thinking itself something that permeates the internal/external barrier?

You wouldn't place points as coordinates but ranges, say -0.3F to 0.6T is your location on the graph.

You can do this and you get the F4 root lattice (part of the E8 lattice). In my view it is related to sacred geometry too like the Enneagram which is also a modern personality model. Also relates to the Sri Yantra, wheel of life, and tree of life. If you think of E8 as derived from Cl(8) (related to elementary celluar automata aka it's binary) you can relate it to the I-Ching too via the I-Ching's Cl(6) structure.

Neh this has always been my go-to reference table for when I forget the function orders of the types.

But that's a table not a graph

Mm

You could also use a bar graph.

I like making charts and graphs though I'll see if I can work something out
