There are two lines of evidence that I could see that converge on 3. The differences between the numbers (ie (1 to 8) difference = 7); and the following pairings: (0, 1), (7, 8), (?, 4). The other possibility I thought of was 6. Provided the first four letters are irrelevant, the necessary conclusion is a "countdown" sequence (ignoring, also, the 0's).

There are many possibilites. Which one do you guys choose? And why?
