I like visiting Worth 1000 to see what other's can do in photoshop or whatever. It usually a humbling experience.
The site is hosted by aviary who offers some imaging software for free .

I do not know much about it - but - hey it's free

I'm a huge fan of linux, where virtually everything is free . The programs tend to be unpolished/ugly and sometimes hard to use, though.

Nope. Freeware is proprietary software that people give to you without a charge and with strong restrictions on how you are allowed to use it. Open Source is also free but there are only very lax restrictions and you can get the source code which allows you to improve, expand or even create a new piece of software based on the code.
Opera is freeware. Firefox is Open Source. If Microsoft decided tomorrow to give the newest Windows away for nothing it would be freeware too.
While for most normal users this difference is seemingly insignificant, it is very important one and it will be even more important in the future.

freeware is always the best when something is free. obvious logic. anybody paid wouldn't want to be not paid for what they do. for everything else.. u gotta pay.. or somehow compensate...
