Loyal readers may have noticed, no reason why they should, that I have not been about much in the last few years. Apart from the usual reasons --- as in the manga trope Tragedy of Long Life; after a long time, just as in long marriage, people have less to communicate --- partially it was my crook arm. After smashing it thanks to loft diving the immediate operation didn't take, and I had to wait 4 years ( more due to incompetence and Covid than it being socialized medicine * ) for a further operation to remove and replace the slipped plates. Which happened on the 6th Sept very well, leading to universal rejoicing.

Anyway... The biannual hosting fee is due, and until it is paid the lights may turn off. Hoping to rectify this as soon as possible. Just a stormy petrel here as warning. There is no need to worry about closure.

Thanks.

Ah, but... I forgot to finish the footnote *

Just to say whatever the Grandeurs et Misères of socialized healthcare, in America I would have had to pay $16,000 for each operation plus many additionals each charged for [ such as awesomely, ambulances ], according to this cute website.

Elsewhere on the same site, comes this rare gem on dentistry from Nashville TN:

I feel very blessed. I have only had to have a few crowns in my 55 years and fortunately I have a very honest, competent and ethical Dentist with strong morals and values.
Even so, I have spent thousands of dollars. But we’ll worth it and much less than it would have cost at most other rip off artists.
Here’s the real pisser. While I and all of you are paying thousands of hard earned dollars to keep up our teeth, there are thousands of low life punk ass thugs walking around with beautiful smiles they got while in jail. Yes, you and I paid for their nice smiles. While we’re working 40 + hours a week to support our families and pay our high insurance premiums, these low life, scum bucket pukes, who violated our rights, get three hots, a cot and free dental work. Along with all the other free things they get because their entitled.
Remember this the next time you have to finance 1,000’s of $’s to pay for your Med. Or dental work and then remember it again when you go to the polls !

Even as Alabama prepares to wisely increase the number of penal institutions as best use of it's Covid grants --- whilst a later commentator in the dental thread indicates such allegations may not made of whole cloth, but even if they were, it takes an especial type of ressentiment to envy the joys of being in a Deep South prison.

Including the unwholesome temperatures there, apparently.

Similarly, in 2014, the people of Jefferson Parish, LA only voted to build a new jail after local leaders promised there would be no air conditioning.

Democracy in action.

It's hard to get a job when you've got messed up teeth and it's easy to get messed up teeth in jail. Of course people in jail often can't afford to get their teeth fixed and having messed up teeth can cause other medical issues. So the government has a duty of care to ensure the health of its prisoners, even if that health come's at the government's expense.

Imo having a high prison population is simply a failure of governance, the life of a criminal is dangerous and uncertain and rarely glamorous, it's a poor choice unless there are no other worthwhile options available.

This puritanical concept of punishing wickedness instead of trying to reform criminals into productive citizens is barbaric, inefficient and ineffective.

Ragnar, do you need help with anything? Service oriented help, or financial of any kind? Let us know, if you wish.

Thanks!

Much thanks. We had one donation appeal a few years ago for something other, and gratefully received; yet this being not for profit, I am loath to take money for simply keeping the place open --- although that is certainly preferable to advertising: most of the web seems utterly devoted to parting viewers from their money in one way or another.

Nah, the dedicated hosting is inexpensive [ UrlJet $335 per 2 years ], just that it's a strain on a necessarily low income sometimes, but I think their service is superlative.

Anyway, I'm very grateful for your kind offer.

On these notes: I opened up a page in another non-logged in browser, and was shocked at the Cookie Notice, mandatory, from Xenforo --- barely noticed before since who looks at Cookie Notices ? --- which indicated ever-repellent personalization and analytics to be possible. [ Google Analytics on each website permits a trail all day long ]. Elsewhere we say we have neither nor advertising; so this definitely gave the wrong impression.

Rectified that notice *, and shall next go through the Cookie Usage page ** linked therefrom to purify them of such suggestion.

Now reads:

This site uses cookies to keep you logged in if you register.
By continuing to use this site, you are consenting to our use of cookies. We have no personalisation nor analytics --- especially no Google.

* for other Xenforo users /languages/ : Edit phrase: this_site_uses_cookies_notice

** ditto AdminCP - Appearance - Phrases - help_cookies_description

Only for the primary language English/US. Life's too short to go through all the rest.

Which languages I may add Xenforo carefully makes non-intuitive for users to find; along with the weird layout of this very typing box, with no less than 3 triple-dot> More Options, just like the infamous Hamburger Bar Devs love so much to conceal revealed choice.
