Films on unrequited love

I first watched "The science of sleep" in November 2011 and have watched the film repeatedly for the next two+ years. (once every few weeks) I like the film a lot because I can really relate to the male protagonist in terms of his emotional maturity and also his quirkiness/eccentricity. Also, the female protagonist is similar to a crush I had for a year and two months.

But right now, I'm kinda bored with that film.

I looked up "films about unrequited love" on google and most of the links involve the male and female protagonist hooking up at some point but that's not what I want. I don't want to see them end up together at any point in time.

So I was wondering if any of you know any films with plots similar to that in "The science of sleep", which is to say that the male protagonist is kinda quirky and eccentric and his love for the female protagonist remains unrequited.

Thank y'all. :)

idk if u like anime, and this is slightly probably too tangential because the male protagonist isn't as quirky as you would probably like

but

5 Centimeters Per Second

Tohno Takaki and Shinohara Akari, two very close friends and classmates, are torn apart when Akari's family is transferred to another region of Japan due to her family's job. Despite separation, they continue to keep in touch through mail. When Takaki finds out that his family is also moving, he decides to meet with Akari one last time.

As years pass by, they continue down their own paths, their distance slowly growing wider and their contact with one another fades. Yet, they keep remembering one another and the times they have shared together, wondering if they will have the chance to meet once again.

Anime is the best at the world of introverts and unrequited love...

Becoming john malkovich

Great movie. And rather haunting.

(And John Cusack and Cameron Diaz did something new in their careers at that time... you can't even easily recognize Diaz... although Catherine Keener kind of established her acting persona at that point in her career...)

.............

Well, it can be kind of hard to find movies where the pair was never together -- often movies focus on the loss of a relationship rather than one who never began.

For example, there's 500 Days of Summer, but they were together a bit before the breakup and the movie focuses more on the guy's response to the breakup and trying to win her back.

I really liked "My Best Friend's Wedding," although things are rather spun around and the female is the protagonist out to recapture the love of her best friend (a guy) who unexpectedly became engaged. I think what I liked best, besides some of the humorous scenes, was that the movie has balls and doesn't wuss out at the end. You never see the protagonist and her ex together, that's all well in the past.

I forget how "The Breakup" ends. I thought Moulin Rouge was a pretty funny movie, if you're very N intensive and can handle F stuff; the end of it is shattering in terms of intensity.

For a scene of intensity, there are Snape's memories in the very last Harry Potter movie (Deathly Hallows part 2) where you see who the guy loved all of his life but never got to be with. I find it pretty devastating to watch; his intense loneliness and loss is palpable the whole way through the scene. His love really was always unrequited.

let me know what you think!

It made me quite emotional (especially the first episode/story. Rather heart-wrenching) and the end of the film isn't the same old get-together story you see in most films, so that was nice. I like how it depicted that you have to move on and things don't usually turn out the way you want it to but you have to move on anyway.

Personally, though, I could relate to Kanae a lot. As in I could empathize with her situation because I was in a similar one last year. But these experiences are good for us for they allow us to grow and become stronger. (in the sense of positive disintegration)

Exactly...It was so realistic.

beautiful

The whole film is an essence of life's bitter-sweetness.

The science of sleep is like that too, when you examine it closely. Only this time, it's told from the perspective of an eccentric guy who spends most of his time in his fantasies and has the emotional intelligence of a child.

But I must say that I found 5 centimetres per second did a better job of portraying the bitter-sweetness of life, as you put it, than the science of sleep did because the whole intermingling between reality and dreams can be quite disorienting for most causing the main message (or what I thought was the main message) of the story to be sidelined.

I've watched 500 days of summer, watching john malcovich and harry potter but I haven't watched by best friend's wedding yet. Maybe I'll watch it someday. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
