Hey, so I just made an account on this site a few days ago. I found out I'm an intp and while researching it further I came across this site. I just clicked on it to do some creeping but a lot of you guys think the same way I do and I feel right at home so I made an account. I've been commenting a lot on topics that I'm sure you all have put a lot of thought into (we can't help it right?). Well I felt kind of selfish for not sharing some of my thoughts I've had so here you go..
Facebook, I don't feel like writing much on it now but I'm sure many of you have a Facebook with friends and people you hardly know :P I deleted mine a while ago because it just disgusted me. But we check these things every day or other day religiously, absorbing the information. Well have you guys found patterns in it? Not specifically on what people say exactly because those things change but the way they say things and how they present their information. Like maybe their delivery? It's hard to put into words but it's like facebook has one mind or better yet a general flow to it, and people adhere to that flow the best they can (maybe it's the likes?). Anyways anyone else notice this? I deleted my account because most people are just so damn stupid on that site. So stupid I want to cry lol

People's posting habits are sculpted by the feedback they receive. Like/share/subscribe.

IRL, people's talking habits are sculpted similarly. If someone smiles or nods, the communicator intuitively makes note of the content that garnered such a response, and later seeks to recreate it.

Facebook takes it a step further by also having algorithms for who's exposed to your posts and activity, which means people are conditioned to shape how that algorithm perceives them. If your activity isn't consistent facebook is less likely to deliver you to your target audience. This results in homogoneous behaviour within and across individuals, selecting for behaviours like selfies, deepities, relationships updates, feel-goodery, and accessible pop-science.

That's my guess anyway :P

I used to have it for a while, mainly to creep on other people. But I also figured it gave people a chance to creep on me and perhaps our mutual creeping would lead us to become better acquainted in RL because we found we were creepy in similar ways had mutual interests.

I didn't add everyone and anything to my friends list, so my news feed was a mix of political articles, local news and of course the occasional "today we walked 5 hours with our dogs" type message.

Some things were useful information. Either in learning new things about the world or about the people I kept in contact with. If you say you walked 5 hours with your dogs, that does tell me something about you together with the other things I know. I just observed everything and made mental notes of useful things.

Well, in the end, I don't really trust FB and sometimes I feel an increased need for privacy, so I deactivated it.

They have? I didn't know. I've always had few friends on there, so I was surprised when I visited a profile and saw posts that hadn't appeared on my news feed. And my news feed wasn't that active, so I would've noticed, I think.

Well, that sucks for us super creepers, then I would have to visit everyone individually )=

Older Facebook was better, when it was more about just shallow socialization with actual friends. Sharing pictures from last night's party or making plans or funny statuses.

Now I don't use it right. Probably because I kind of had a brief period where I posted weird shit and kind of lost track of what it's for and deleted hundreds of people and started to try and delete all my history.

Then I discovered that whatever history is associated with deleted friends is unavailable so I tried to add as many people back as I could just so I could delete the history. It also sucked because you had to remove every post individually. I guess in retrospect they were maybe hurt I don't know, probably annoyed with me.

For some reason it was a super big deal to me.

Now my account is carefully moderated and I regularly delete content more than a few months old from my timeline but it's also more integrated now like it either shows up or doesn't exist.

Totally didn't answer the op questions...:D

My biggest observation is that people actually talking to each other is extremely rare now and mostly people just share videos and news articles which is boring to me.

I mainly use my for bitching about the government and raising awareness for causes etc. I do have friends and family on there, and apart from the odd jokes, photo albums, mines still just used to bitch about the government and receive info on the government.

Social media sites are what you make of them.

Facebook became way more enjoyable after I liked a dozen RWBY fan pages. Now the feed is full of wonderful art from my currently favourite show.

I'm in a slightly different place. Posting on Facebook is a lot like writing for a newspaper, which was my livelihood since forever. It has also allowed me to get in touch with people I graduated from high school with, which is a good thing. Ditto a far-flung family. And the mixing up of "Facebook friends" from all the different places I've lived, activities I've done, jobs I've held and pastimes I've had is like being inside a kaleidoscope, a constantly changing pattern of little sparkly pieces that bump and interact in interesting ways.

Since I've written stuff that goes public and never disappears since I was 22, I don't share the fears some of you apparently have about leaving spoor on the Web. And I don't put stuff out there in the first place that might cause me trouble. My posts on Facebook are about like my posts in here, for me. Kind of a built-in default setting of "be thoughtful when you write, people are going to read it." I do get a little snippy with mental shitbirds who can't do more in a political discussion than caw and drop whitewash out their butts, but a guy has to have a little fun.

Anyone that wants to know me on FB send me a pm.

My wall is mostly atheist and political stuff, still facebook is linked to the messenger app on my phone so if you want to talk to me anytime about anything that's the best way to go.

I use Facebook messenger on my phone to keep in contact with people I actually talk to. I never read the news feed as its always boring trivial crap and never even look at it from my laptop. I never post publicly either. If it wasn't for messenger, the one platform everyone uses I would have deleted my account already. I deleted hundreds of 'friends' too.
There was a time when I was a little addicted to it and would check it everyday but stopped as its just a time sink.

If you look past the sea of advertising and trending items you couldn't give two shits about you realise its pretty similar to real life stuff. Over posters detailing their whole schedule tend to get ignored a lot, but obviously feel like they're contributing, dispite how mindless it is.

There is also a lot of people posting where they are/travelling to; some will be happy about sharing of course but a lot is just out of convenience so they can use some public WiFi. Basically most stuff seems to be linked back to fb, (you can always say no but most don't its easier to click yes :p). So its just collecting so much info its scary. Its a mass tracking device and in just a matter of seconds you can peer at all kinds of strange intimancies. While its intriguing to look at I find it surreal and off putting and try not to be involved. I prefer people to share information to me directly if they choose.

I need to get round to cleaning up my news feed and my friends list sometime, too much crap and too many randoms I'm not in touch with polluting the airwaves but I know I'm never gonna muster the energy to actually do it, too much like effort.

Facebook helped me amplify my hatred for friends and family, so I canned it... twice. I leave it enabled just for future contact with others, if necessary or desired. I cannot say enough bad things about Facebook and its impact on my life.

Wait is that the real smithcommajohn. I'm sorry to say it's been so long I don't even know exactly why this rings bells. Oh I remember why now.

Edit: may as well advertise. If anyone needs help hiding from the internet or wants an internet privacy security check let me know.
