Why do we like to express our views? Why do we come here for hours at a time just to talk about what we believe in? Is it because we dont want to be alone in the world? Or is it because we want people to respect us and think we are smart? Or maybe we just like to share our knowledge to impress people. This was the whole reason of the internet, so scientists could share their ideas from all over the world..Why do YOU like to talk about shit that doesnt matter. Why do I like to talk about shit that doesnt matter, like this post. Each of the threads here lead abolutley no where.

Yes, the internet is what coffee shops were for the Enlightenment: a place to share ideas, texts, advice, and intellectual conversation. The posts lead nowhere? On the contrary, putting an idea or belief into writing helps me to either jettison or retain the idea. This community is beautiful because it comes with instant feedback. Folks call me on my b.s. and enhance and mold my sturdier ideas. Hopefully, my contributions do the same for other people from time to time.

Oh, you want me to get personal. People my age, in the flesh, are often consumed with alcohol, the female form, sports and the like, thus, they leave me cold. Who can say for sure, but it seems this created or exacerbated my Schizoid Personality Disorder tendencies. The point is, this community offers me something that my generation does not: wit, cerebral curiosity, and a genuine interest in global issues. Let me see, share my knowledge to impress people, not really. For the aforesaid reasons, the hope is that mutual sharing of knowledge and opinions will lead to a larger transmission and consolidation of beliefs.

To me, the internet to INTPs is to what the hippie movement was for ISFPs. It's a place where we can be ourselves and use our intuition to theorize about the outer world. Internal thoughts become external words typed into sentences that attempt to form a logical structure. We no longer have to think inside our lonely heads, we can let our mind's wonders flow through the motions of our fingers.

In short: The internet is an embodiment of the INTP brain.

I couldn't agree more, and your last sentence is one of the best metaphors I heard in a long time.

I wish I wasn't so perfectionist about my writing (and anything else, for that matter) or I'd be posting randomly, just following the threads already present in my mind.
I suppose it takes some time to get relaxed and not worry about possible misunderstandings and misinterpretations....this is one of the rare places where I found really intelligent, eloquent people with something to say.

*"Philosophical" discussions about (non)existence of God are annoying, but let's not be overcritical:beatyou:

DesertSmeagle, I think you should answer these questions yourself and see if that clears things up for you, because you seem to be missing the point...

Made me lol because it's true.. These threads lead to nowhere because knowledge is nothing without application. It sounds to me like you're frustrated in a point of stagnation and you wish you could get somewhere will all that you're learning. I honestly have been feeling that way ever since my last weeks of high school. I want to move out already and get my freedom. I want to start interacting with like minded people, developing projects.

We like the internet because we have time to choose our words with care, and limit how much emotion we show.

We like conversation because humans are social creatures. Even INTPs.

By expressing our views we are expressing our Selves, something that many may lack opportunity for doing in their local environment. For example i am a recluse, way out in the country perhaps a thousands miles from any intellectual haven, being the the midwest of America. There is the University of Chicago to the far North and Rice University in Houston to the south, but it is pretty much an intellectual wasteland between those two points...lol

I enjoy calling people out on their BS, in the hopes they realize when they grow up that it is BS. I mean if no one ever points out your errors, that you make repeatedly, what's to motivate change to correct those errors?

I can't speak for others, but I know I do try to post on occasions things that might matter - especially in the Psych threads. Although I will admit that in most of my posts in the philosophy and faith subforum, i am merely defending the faith, in other forums I have tried to provide useful information, in response to questions.

As far as the value of this particular forum there have been ideas and concepts posted and discussed here and no where else in the world, it truly is something new and evolving as a media. I can't count the times that a google search has turned up with a thread from this forum listed near the top of the first page...

I guess this forum is like most of life, those who invest little into it, get little out of it. as it is embedded within my 3500 posts/ puzzle pieces are the images of two different books, but I am too lazy to separate the pieces and assemble the two puzzles...

There we go. Thats the answer i was lookin for. Im also in a intellectual wasteland and had my first day of college today. Im not in the barren plains of the midwest, but instead im in the vast forests of central NY. My college is mostly girls and i just hope that there is ONE person i can talk to about this shit. Ive noticed that many of my peers pretend to act smart and intellectual, ..you know those fat ugly girls that get good grades so they think they're smart? really annoying

Yeah it is those Pretenders, that causes us who truly are intelligent so much grief. I imagine there are 12 Pretenders for every really intelligent person. So most people end up stereotyping us with the Pretenders, and usually of course, it is a negative stereotype because Pretenders are using their supposed superior intellectual as an excuse to exercise egotism over their 'inferiors'. Hmmm There are not enough INTPians in the general population to form a stereotype, I wonder what is the predominate stereotype we fit into in Others' eyes...

I have a number of very intelligent friends in NYC, but most of them are old like me and not the kind of person one could just drop in on and say "Hey, Da Blob said to say Hello!" ( Doctors, Lawyers etc), so I can't recommend anyone there to be that one person you can talk too...

What were your reasons for posting this thread? Your question is probably answered by asking yourself that question (not to the degree you'd like perhaps, but it will not be any greater or lesser then most of our replies).
I think there is several reasons, but I think often it is because we seek acknowledgment.

*will perhaps write more later, but now I should probably post in the drunk thread. Before I do that though, I'll give you the acknowledgment you seek in a semi-ironical manner " You are damn smart and your thought patterns are sooo deep. You even thought about the act, and reasons of posting a thread, when posting a thread. Oooooo. You have my respect:P *

Personal growth, better understanding of concepts and opinions; change.

Talking about ideas is like food for intuition. I *need* it.

But I personally know of very few people that are interested in having intelligent discussions with people they don't know well.

But those types of people are here. (I mean 'here', as in, the internet, or any place with a concentration of INTPs).

I am here for some very simple reasons. Boredom and wanting to socialize.

As an INFJ, I feel this desire to interact in a way that I am understood. To an INFJ, that's socializing. If I'm around people who don't understand what I am saying, I just introvert and am not socializing at all.

In writing, I can articulate my Ni + Ti a heck of a lot better than in real life where I have only Fe being fed by Ti.

People are sometimes surprised when they hear me speak after getting to know me online some. I'm just more sociable online where I can clearly express my views in a structured format.

In real life, people will be having a conversation around me, and I will want to join in... so I will begin processing what they're saying, and thinking it over, and coming up with an intuition to share. Well, a profound and applicable intuition takes time to formulate, about 10 seconds too long because by the time I come out of Ni + Ti mode, the conversation has moved on to a new topic.

If I speak up then, it's just awkward because that's not where the conversation is at. Usually, I just say "Yeah" and agree. I'm never given enough time to respond. My brain works well, it's just damn slow because I think it has to work five times harder as an INFJ using inferior and tertiary functions.

If I go straight to Fe + Ni socializing mode, my responses do speed up, but usually this is only possible when I'm in a really good mood or drunk.

So yeah... forum is better.
