I had a nice outing with my mother so any movie would have been fine; and, as an 80's and 90's kid, it was a bit nostalgic and sentimental to see Dolph Lundgren, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, and Chuck Norris on the same screen at the same time. However, it was extremely difficult to ignore the gnawing sense of poor plot and non existent character development. I guess the inside joke is that we already know who the characters are, especially given the liberal use of iconic phrases such as "I'll be back" and Bruce Willis' "yippee kiyay." But the subtle humorous references to old classics did not make up for the lack of plot. There is no lack of violence, gun shots, or gore. In the action respect, the movie gets an A+.
I really want to like this movie and can't rip on it too hard because I think it delivered exactly what it set out to deliver-- an action-packed semi spoof and Hollywood action star reunion. But, given the high caliber actors, I just feel like they could have invested more into the story line.
I know a lot of work goes into making a full-featured movie. The Expendables 2 just felt rushed, maybe like a hurried script of Law & Order SVU, written in less-than-a-week and follows a very simple plot line with no surprises nor twists.
The Asian woman was not very sexy; I'm sure they could have found a better one, or maybe they spent their entire budget on the male actors.
The only *high-five* I give this movie is Jean Claude Van Damme's awesome portrayal of a villain. His character is the only saving grace that I can take away from this movie.
So although I think this movie delivers what it sets out to deliver, I am reminded to appreciate good writing, and that there is a line that separates something like "The Dark Knight" from pure action fluff.
As a contrast, I really enjoyed The Bourne Legacy.
