I like punk, rap, ska, reggae, and some electronica. My favorite bands are Against Me!, Jedi Mind Tricks, Gorillaz, Ratatat, Gogol Bordello, Sublime, operation ivy, etc.

If anyone knows of any good bands similar to these then please give me some suggestions.

Re: Expanding my music collection. Any sugestions?

hmm, I was really into sublime, rancid, gorillaz, sum 41, and the transplants about a year ago, and then over the winter I got into some electronica like Massive Attack and Juno Reactor.

Then I found progressive metal and my music library's volume has skyrocketed. I'm not sure if you'll like it, but I was had a similar taste to you at one point, so it's worth a shot:
check out bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, and Ayreon.

and if that doesn't work for you, Rancid is a good punk band, and Transplants is a mix of rap and punk. as for ska, I liked The Specials, as well as some stuff by The Clash, though I guess that might be getting back into punk.

As for reggae, I'm not a huge fan, but you probably won't go wrong if you look up the major names like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, UB40, and so on.

With electronica, Massive Attack is great, though their newer stuff is very dark, if you have the stomach for it i would recommend it. Another good group is Theivery Corporation. Juno Reactor was another I liked, and were responsible for a lot of the soundtrack to The Matrix sequels; a lot of it is overblown and too 'epic' sounding, but thats what I liked about it.

and then of course theres some thread around here titled "Suggestions for a loser" and I would recommend you check that out as well. anyways, I hope this helps.

I'm not too familiar with the bands you mentioned, but I'd recommend to anyone that they sign up on pandora.com. I've discovered nearly all my favorite bands that way, and was able to find bands I liked in totally different genres than what I was used to. It was great.

And it's always helpful to look into the bands that your favorite bands like.

Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S.:slashnew:

What?!? This is preposterous. I had no idea.

I wonder if there are other online radio variants that are any good for other countries.

I used Pandora a lot before it became unavailable here in Sweden. I've tried to find away around it by proxy to no avail.

I'm not familiar with the bands you mentioned, but check out Dälek and Madvillain for some awesome experimental hiphop.

Since you like Gorillaz, I'll throw out Deltron for some good hip hop. (Del the funky homosapien in Gorillaz)

Some of my fav. electronica stuff comes from infected mushroom, as I always advocate... check out project 100 or heavyweight, avratz or pletzturra, gives some decent variety.

Get some metal. No, seriously. How could you not list Tool or Clutch? Just because they sound nothing like what you listen to? (JK:smoker:)

And now for the discalimer: Yes, I know that Tool and Clutch may not be considered metal in certain circles. No, I don't only listen to metal (if you can tell me without googling who Virguloides is you win a "bitch away" pass).

But the point of the OP was to find new MUSIC, even though they posted it in the form of "new music LIKE (insert band here)."

Great listening that you have never heard of:
"Al Qaynah"
"Green Milk from the Planet Orange"
"Foxy Shazam"
"Quicksand"
"The Spirit Level"
"Mercan Dede"
"Mouse on Mars" (you might have heard of them)

I love Massive Attack.

You might like The Prodigy if you're one of the four people who don't know them.

UNKLE are worth a try.

Aphex Twin?

Goldfrapp's first album, Felt Mountain, is amazing

The above are mainly electronica-ish.

As for ska, No Doubt is about all I'm familiar with in that genre, but I quite like them.

I don't suppose you'll try post-rock, alternative, indie rock, folk etc?

Someone mentioned Tool - they're worth a look even if you're skeptical about progressive.

Re: Expanding my music collection. Any sugestions?

To touch on your bit of electronica side...

Bubblegum and Eurobeat and such =] =] =]. I got hooked on this stuff and probably spent $200 on ebay importing stuff, and a week or so of research. You should be able to find some of these though. There is a site called "bubblegum dancer" if you get hooked.

here are some artists, songs
Super Eurobeat CD 195
Dr. Bombay
Carlito - "Russkij Pusskij" (youtube this lol, same guy as Dr. Bombay)
Chipz -"Bang Bang", "Waikiki Beach"
A-Moe - "Little Red Ridinghood" (youtube this lol)
Sarina Paris - "Look At Us"
Jenny Rom
Toy-Box - "007", "Russian Lullaby"
Code Red - "18", "Kanikuly 2008"
Becky - "Less than three"

not bubblegum but the girl from Toy Box... also check out the rest of Arash's stuff
Aneela - Chori Chori (ft. Arash)

For indie-ish, rock-ish, like stuff...

CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy)
BitterSweet
MGMT
Family Force 5

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - "Hit And Run Holiday" album is good

Last breath - Mad Caddies is kind of a fun ska-ish song? Not certain that's the correct genre though.
