In humans. Up to 10 seconds beforehand.
Can your brain detect events before they even occur? That was the stunning conclusion of a 2012 meta-analysis of experiments from seven independent laboratories over the last 35 years, which found that the human body "can apparently detect randomly delivered stimuli occurring 1-10 seconds in the future" (Mossbridge, Tressoldi, & Utts, 2012). In the studies, physiological readings were taken as participants were subjected to unpredictable events designed to activate the sympathetic nervous system (for example, showing provocative imagery) as well as 'neutral events' that did not activate the nervous system. These readings showed that the nervous system aligned with the nature of the event (activated/not activated) - and what's more, the magnitude of the pre-event response corresponded with the magnitude of the post-event response.
http://www.dailygrail.com/2014/3/Sc...nsciously-React-Events-10-Seconds-They-Happen
for stimuli of two or more types that are presented in an order designed to be unpredictable and that produce different post-stimulus physiological activity, the direction of pre-stimulus physiological activity reflects the direction of post-stimulus physiological activity, resulting in an unexplained anticipatory effect. The reports we examined used one of two paradigms: (1) randomly ordered presentations of arousing vs. neutral stimuli, or (2) guessing tasks with feedback (correct vs. incorrect). Dependent variables included: electrodermal activity, heart rate, blood volume, pupil dilation, electroencephalographic activity, and blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) activity.

I read about this about two years ago and have been trying to find it again recently. Thanks for doing my legwork!

It's an interesting concept, I'd like to see more studies relating to it. Nothing I really care to speculate about as of yet though.

Maybe after their requisite 87 studies for statistical power?

Evidence of sensing things before they happen?

No thank you I don't require any. I have all the evidence I need, presently it's just a little bit, uh, subjective.

Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Its principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity. The discoloration of ages had been great.

Thank you for posting this HabitatDoctor ^^

The reality of psychokinetic phenomena has been a long-standing interest of mine. I'm quite convinced that pre-knowledge of events - as well as other things like mind reading and remote awareness - are all real phenomena. It's refreshing and fascinating to see a group like PEAR producing empirical data on this topic!

I wonder.. if there would be enough people on intpf interested in this topic that we could pull together experiments of our own?

The Mossbridge et al study is a meta-analysis of 26 other studies, so that would set of any scientist's alarm bells to begin with. Secondly, there's a study by Bem (2011) which attempted a similar experiment. This study resulted in the following critique by the journals editorial:

"Does psi exist? D. J. Bem (2011) conducted 9 studies with over 1,000 participants in an attempt to demonstrate that future events retroactively affect people's responses. Here we discuss several limitations of Bem's experiments on psi; in particular, we show that the data analysis was partly exploratory and that one-sided p values may overstate the statistical evidence against the null hypothesis. We reanalyze Bem's data with a default Bayesian t test and show that the evidence for psi is weak to nonexistent. We argue that in order to convince a skeptical audience of a controversial claim, one needs to conduct strictly confirmatory studies and analyze the results with statistical tests that are conservative rather than liberal. We conclude that Bem's p values do not indicate evidence in favor of precognition; instead, they indicate that experimental psychologists need to change the way they conduct their experiments and analyze their data.

There is nothing mentioned in the Frontiers about the following replication study by Ritchie et al (2012), which failed to produce similar results seven months before the Frontiers article:

http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0033423

Finally, these last sentences in the Mossbridge study are probably the most credible:

"Once this occurs, the problem can be approached with greater confidence and rigor. The cause of this anticipatory activity, which undoubtedly lies within the realm of natural physical processes (as opposed to supernatural or paranormal ones), remains to be determined."

The Frontier article seems like the perfect "evidence" for any New-Age internet site prone to latching on to any tentative claim of sensation.

I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

I've forseen the future on at least one occasion. The scenario was completely mundane and random, but was prolonged over a period of two minutes .

Dreamt it the night before, experienced it the next day.

Yeah, I've had pre-emptive-deja-vu-via-dream (fish date, deer, wreck, SR, evil raccoon) at least 5 times, and deja-vu-while-awake at least a dozen times. Via dream has always been more powerful.

JANURARY 2015: The tech startup I worked for began to give out raises for no reason. Would allow overtime and produce bullshit weekly updates that were nonsensical.
- I BECAME SUSPICIOUS-
MARCH 2015: TheY began hiring people, like crazy but they did not train properly. People within the company also began to fornicate with each other and that never turned out well because that was out of convenience and made the work place filled with strange sexual energy.
MAY 2015: The founders begin to be more open about their lack of interest in the company that they have founded. Baby boomers from Silicon Valley and Hedge Funds show up out of nowhere and make their rounds around the office and make everyone uncomfortable
-I SENSE THAT A SELL OFF IS NEAR...OR THEY ARE REALLY THRISTY TO BE BAILED OUT-I PUT IN MY NOTICE OF MY LAST DAY OF WORK WHICH WAS JULY 1st 2015
JUN 2015: the founder of the company takes his shirt off in front of the computer and after this his behavior becomes more bizarre. The founders want everyone to feel -included- so they pretend to be interested and have a company block party with the usual bullshit trinkets: Ping-pong, beer kegs, tie dye shirts, deli sandwiches, and pop music
- I CHANGE MY LAST DAY OF WORK TO JUNE 26th 2015
JUNE 22nd: The general manager sends out a mass email saying that the schedule will be cut tremendously and that weekend shifts will be eliminated and that full time workers will have less than 20 hours a week.
JUNE-AUGUST 7th : THE COMPANY WEBSITE SHUTS DOWN. CUSTOMERS ARE FURIOUS BECUASE OF COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS, PEOPLE DONT HAVE ANSWERS. 240 people are with out jobs well not all: THE FOUNDERS, THE FEW PEOPLE WHO WERE ENGINEERING TEAM ALL WENT TO EBAY.. THAT IS ONLY 10 people.

YES! I SAW THE FUTURE!I KNEW EARLY ON SOMETHING WAS WRONG. THE MOST HORRIBLE. PART ABOUT THIS STORY IS THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE LOYAL TO THIS COMPANY WERE THE ONES WHO GOT THE WORST TREATMENT.

INTPS ARE AMAZING AT FIGURING OUT WHATS WRONG. THE TRUTH WAS CLEAR AND NOBODY THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. NOT BEING A FOLLOWER WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY DNA, HAVING MY OWN MIND HAS PAID OFF. AND IT WILL FOR YOU INTPS AS WELL.

Yeah, I think that is Ne pattern recognition paired with a Ji function trying to interpret what's happening. I get vibes like that too. My perceptions will change as data changes IRL time, but it bears out I'm usually more attuned to probable large currents in the data than some others who are just focusing on the current situation.

I can relate to this really well, it doesn't happen often but it has happened very frequently at some times. Anybody else experience this? I'm curious. It may be an INTP trait. (Maybe just a human trait though)

Ever since I was recruited to the army at age 19 my future prediction developed,I have seen frequently what shit will happen a lot of times but couldn't change it,they would not listen.
Well I had to develop it in order to no get fucked up.

Over with that hell recently :D

I predicted the end of a guy's sentence once. He was looking at his phone and was saying "Is this...?", and I knew he would say Team Fortress 2, so I almost said Team Fortress, but I stopped myself to not seem weird. Of course, he said Team Fortress 2.

I didn't even look at his phone.

be real though, when are you not thinking about team fortress 2? Your brain just saw an incomplete sentence, therefore an incomplete thought and looked to fill it in with whatever would make sense to you, hence what you probably think about most, TF2.

Marker correlation.

We often remember faces but not names. We remember locations but not the streets connected to them. Ever wonder why that is?

Language is abstract. A face is not, a location is not. We are far more likely to shed wisdom on an abstract subject than we are a physical one.

Music, while abstract, registers to a physical sense. The words don't matter insomuch as the rhythm. We pick up on the words later. This explains why you can sometimes know the very next song on the radio before it begins. A marker exists for a sequence of events in your mind and your mind seeing the pattern expects it to continue.

At some point in repetition these markers are established. I've talked about markers before and what they typically represent but this is probably the first time I've talked about correlation between markers and the way we visualize the information to later see it, as we would a face and instantly know what it is. Even if we're missing part of it.

Yes I've had this experience before.

See I was walking down main street with a group of my mates and we were wondering what bar to go into anyway long story short we get to the bar and were're having a grand old time until I trip and knock into this big Scottish guy who was (and I stress was) carrying four beers. Anyway at this point his shirt (tank top) looked like it came off the set of american psycho and his face didn't look much different. So at this point it's kinda a sticky situation. Using my famous ENTP charm I decided to calm things down. While he's about half way through "wtf are you" (as he takes off his tank top) I start my monologue, see to calm someone down you need to apologize and say you're sorry then complement them. At least that's standard procedure from around here. So instantly without time to think I say "look sorry man I tripped on the step and wow are you a stripper because you have great eyes"

Now I admit I probably could have come up with something better. Originally I was going to say abs but my brain thought fast enough to realize that was a bad idea but not fast enough to realize eyes was probably worse. I also should have set a redundant response that differentiated between male and female compliments and also set a parameter that left anything sexual out of either of those responses. Unfortunately I had to learn from experience and set those later. So this was the point where I sensed something before it happened. I'm not entirely sure why I knew a fist was going to fly at my face however the extra warning time that my brain provided me with gave me up to 10 seconds to flee as the sun set over the Scottish face.

So yeah! My brain's ability to predict seemingly random events has ensured my survival to this day.
