His perspective is unique in big business terms, but a viewpoint which is getting more and more popular as high-tec jobs and lifestyles become more widespread, so I wouldn't say he's a maverick of humanity's mentalscape. Elon did a bunch of cool stuff, has implemented some dodgy business practices and unfulfilled promises etc., and sent stuff into space. Cool enough guy, I prefer not to form opinions of folk I haven't personally interacted with, tho.
I'll not place him with Tesla, Einstein etc. but rather with the likes of Jobs and inventors/industrialists/entrepreneurs, not hard scientists like Da Vinci.
The guy's a businessman and a dreamer and knows how to do his own PR, which means he at least attempts to understand and interact with his client base/supporters, something which can't be said for most billionaire industrialists.
I'll give the man some time, maybe he has yet to offer a tech that is sustainable and affordable and planet-changing(agri, transport, general welfare, etc.), which is what humanity needs now imo instead of chargeable cars and actors in space.
