Doubting if I'm INTP

or maybe a confused one? Maybe an introverted E type, if such thing exists. Became an introvert because of past experiences, I was apparently very extroverted as a kid.

Are INTPs direct people? I can't stand indirectness in any situation.

I've taken interest in space/astronomy and often think about the universe and stuff, but I freaking love surfing and random adventures.
People have also described me as spontaneous. I just do something randomly whenever I feel like it.

I'm definitely not a J. Indecisiveness, lazy, not finishing anything, being late, waiting until the last minute, and having terrible sleeping patterns according to normal humans.

I dont know man.. Help. Maybe I am INTP with borderline things.

Oh yeah I've been complimented for being very laidback, but criticized for being "nonchalant"

Would it make that much of a difference if you were another type?

No but considering this is an intp forum, I would think a lot of discussion is about mbti and applying it to yourself and others. I dont care otherwise.

I said cool because whatever the person wrote described him/her too.

Lost sleep because of thinking about typing myself/mbti not because I care what type I am.

Yeah, I don't consider myself the most introverted and I struggled with possibly being an ENTP for a while. The problem was that it just didn't quite...fit. The importance basically is in that we want to just 'fit' somewhere and not be the blacksheep all of the time.

No, you sound exactly like this guy I know who's an ESLW and sometimes switches to drop D.

Those things you listed also apply to me too.

I'm possibly a depressed ENTP if that makes you feel (erm... think?) any better. The number of people on the forum who are not INTP either knowingly or unknowingly is pretty high, so I doubt what you get from this forum is strictly INTP specific.

Aye.

It's rather a gathering of people who have common interests and some similar habits/tendencies. So long as that is what you're here for, then I suppose it isn't relevant.

However, if your aim were to actually learn things pertaining to your psyche and how to develop/utilize it efficiently - then it is quite important, yes.

If you see a person you do not believe to fit the INTP definition and they may not know, would you be willing to share with an explanation as to why? I am constantly in doubt and sadly, my subjective observation can only go so far. Filming myself for a few days would not work due to my increased level of being conscious of the act and therefore acting differently.

Hi @Zionoxis

Though this wasn't directed at me, I'd like to answer: I do have beliefs of what a lot of members here's true types may be, but I don't share them unless asked to. But you're right that an outside perspective is important.

Your self-consciousness is itself a telling aspect of your personality and would not make video-reading you any more difficult if the person knows what to look for. ;p

Yeah, you described me, too. I've also been described as non-chalant. Depending on the "class" of the situation, I've been described as:

non-chalant
"why don't you talk? you think you're better?"
aloof
pensive
dreamy
reflective
preoccupied
elegant
asshole

It's funny though. Though I am that way, I don't like having people around me that are disorganized. I have enough to deal with on my own, I don't need someone else's shit in my way. I'm very indecisive. I write and form a lot of plans (which would be me trying to develop my J) but I almost never get past that because things always change with so many possibilities.

I keep "ideas" documents and running emails to myself adding onto the ideas. I have folders and documents scattered across the file system in my computer, I have no idea where which brilliant idea is buried in the less-than good ones.

I was reading INTJ last night and thought it described a lot of what I've developed into. Maybe you're the same? Maybe you've developed a lot of your non-dominant characteristics?

If you don't think you're INTP, what do you suppose you are?

ps. Yes, I also doubt a lot of people on this forum are INTP. But I include myself in that doubt always to keep a look out. I keep checking.

I don't really understand how one could be "unsure" of their type.. Once I read about the cognitive functions I knew I was an INTP. No doubt.

It seems to me, either you think like an INTP or you don't. Maybe I only feel this way because I am such a classic INTP.. I can't be sure, can't crawl into anyone else's head but my own.

I mean, I read the cognitive functions of an INTJ, ENTP, ENTJ and I am most definitely an INTP. My father is most definately an INTJ, my mother also an INTP.

ayn, it might be the developing traits that muddle the situation. I read INTP and said, "Yes. Finally. Yes." But I read INTJ lately and see I've developed into more of a "I definitely have an opinion on that" kind of person.

That might just be maturity and a culture shock (I moved from the East coast to the West coast). I think major changes in life can trigger the need to bone up on other traits. I could be wrong.

The unsurity probably comes from the P, so many possibilities and you keep checking with/against facts, even applies to typing I guess. I joined INTJ forum first actually, but I left because they seemed to be keen on planning and all that stuff I was never able to do or accomplish even if I tried.

Based on the links Fukyo provided in this thread. http://intpforum.com/showthread.php?t=6602

I was most definitely an ENTP child, that describes me perfectly. And definitely not an INTP child.

I think now I've become a introverted/messed up ENTP. But I guess that's what an INTP is.

@xbox , I think it is good that you consider your type, because it does matter what type you are. To me, knowing your type, and thus functions, is a useful tool in personal development. Keep on posting more information about how you think/act(and why so) in different situations :) It's always interesting to work on types and functions.

. The number of people on the forum who are not INTP either knowingly or unknowingly is pretty high

This is a very common claim on INTP forum and there is some truth to it.. BUT :cat: , the majority of active people on this forum are INTPs. They are not the 'absent minded geniuses' that some profiles so falsely name INTPs. They are 'absent minded' and it should, for obvious reasons, stop there. This is much the source of distrust/mistype when it comes to INTPs. This is ofc not to say that there aren't many none INTPs on this forum.

Just wanted to add that :kilroy:

Thanks a lot for the link. After reading about the different types as children its even MORE clear (if that's even possible) that I am for sure an INTP. Just reading about how INTP's are as infants is describing me! My parents told me I was an infant that didn't need much attention, I never cried unless I was woken up from a nap. I always blamed this on my parents being bad parents, but perhaps it was simply just my true nature.

Perhaps you really are just an ENTP, I don't think it is fair for you to be saying that is what an INTP is.

I have a brother who is a ENTP, a common family joke was to say that me and him are "the same person". But the fact is, he is /very/ different from me. Though we have a lot of the same traits, I think there are very big and important differences between the types.

You may be having a hard time in your life, but I don't believe someone can change types.

@xbox ; if you haven't before, I would read over the cognitive functions of ENTP and INTP to determine what you are. To me, reading the ENTP cognitive functions, I know I am not an ENTP.

Remember, ENTP's are considered "the most introverted extrovert", so keep that in mind.

I don't know what to make of the childhood profiles yet. To this day it's still remarked at how quiet and easy I was, and went to bed without hassles. However, I also hear I was always "smiling" as a baby, but as a kid I would grin when nervous. So maybe I was compensating? I remember some ladies cooing at how shy I was at 2.

I remember liking to go to bed as early as 3 or 4. It was my time to delve into my mind.

By the way, I agree with studies saying the first few years of life are critical in mapping certain things in a child. My parents were bullies of different types and rules were always changing and they were highly emotionally chaotic in my first 5 years. I can't be sure of a lot of things because of that.

As a kid, I was always friendly with strangers especially adults more than kids my age. I wasnt quiet. Its after I started growing up, my esfj dad was actually verbally abusive that I became introverted. I dunno. But everytime I take a test, I get INTP.

I dont know what to make of childhood profiles either. but maybe some of us were E as kids.

I know that my sister started out as a very quiet/observant child, but now shes an obnoxious ESTJ.

I don't think the tests are what really matters, what matters is how you identify with the personality type. I can still get INTJ as a result on a bad day, but I know I am far from.

I'd be very interested to psychoanalyze you....

I am not an expert on the MBTI and do not pretend to be. I only really have a reductionist understanding of the four dichotomies, I don't think the theory is strong enough to warrant further speculation past these extremely useful concepts (the functions for example). That said, I do not understand them and have made little attempt to do so (I'm busy and lazy and addicted to computer games, so autodidactic learning is on the back burner), so I would differ to someone more learned if asked any tricky questions.

When I see someone who strongly contradicts what it means to be I, N, T, or P, I speculate as to their real type, and this happens frequently on this forum. A lot of the time it is people who are dead certain they are INTP's, including my former self. It seems to me that there is something in the description of the INTP which makes less common types want to be 'diagnosed' as INTP, probably that misunderstood genius thing.

A theory on my experiences of similar of a similar preference
Other people being disorganised makes them unpredictable, which makes it difficult to factor in just how flexible you can be with them. They are a limitation on your flexibility that you value. When trying to figure out how late you can leave writing an assignment (or w/e), J's will be predictable and be easily computable, while P's will require you to leave a much larger margin for error.

ayn, I agree you cant change types. Temperament remains the same, but personality changes. Hence the difficulty I am having, because I seemed to be a lot different in my childhood years. I should probably read up on the cognitive functions like someone mentioned.

Something to keep in mind...

Personality type is an expression of preference, not an infallible indicator of behavior. Because you have a PREFERENCE for one thing doesn't mean you are never the other.

As a young child, I was a very big ham and would memorize comedy routines verbatim. My parents would trot me out to entertain their friends. Most people think this is extrovert behavior, but really it was just a child that relished attention. As I got older, I didn't need the attention and spent a lot of time in my room reading. My parents thought I was depressed, but it was simply my introversion asserting itself. They couldn't grasp that their little performer could also be a bookworm that enjoyed solitude.

A little bit of the entertainer remains today. When the stars are aligned right, and I've had just the right amount of alcohol, I can be the life of the party for a blazing 15 minutes. Then I want to go home and not talk. I think there are plenty of I's out there who can say the same.

Because you are N doesn't mean you can't pay attention to details when it is important.

Because you are a T doesn't mean you are a Vulcan and never cried at a sad movie or been swept away by passion.

Because you are a P doesn't mean that you never pursue an interest or goal with dogged determination.

Stuck on that same damned wall.

I fit all the bills of an INTP, except, I am not intellectually motivated and am a victim to sensations.

I enjoy go-karting nowadays and I tend to have a much higher threshold for amusement.

My mind is constantly racing about cars too. I am having an urge to drop out of society and become a mechanic instead.

It's crazy.

Spontaneity is an intuition thing. It is fuzzy logic, not sequential.

So nothing can really describe you to a level you are contented with. Just put the pieces together as far as you can fit them. Other than that, fabricate with common sense.

Just got to accept it. You can't be INTP INTP. You are leaning towards INTP. But you'll always have your hand or foot somewhere else.

What is the most extroverted extrovert? And what is the most extroverted introvert? And what is the most introverted introvert? I am just curious if this is something that can be rationalized by function stack, or is this just a stereotype?

Right and wrong.

There is even more difference among I and E types. In other words, a greater dichotomy than yours exists.

Not sure if you're an INTP?

Dare to look at the outside world and think about it. You're an ENTP

Dare to show your inner feelings first and yer an INFP

Dare to firm up your choices and yer an INTJ

Dare to take apart your computer and yer an ISTP

No you are NOT an ISFP. That's ridiculous.
