For:
- interest in musical artists would strongly correlate with age
- i think a lot of people enjoy music they grew up with
Against:
- musical tastes vary a lot over time and people end up liking all kinds of music from all different time periods
- you can only enjoy as much as you've heard, it's likely that if people heard lots of different music they'd grow to like other things even more
Anecdote:
- my partner actually hates a lot of the music she grew up with because it was boring as shit, and likes pretty much all sorts of music that she was never exposed to when younger
Artists i enjoy today are often at a similar age or slightly older than me. Good luck figuring how they all relate to zeitgeist, given that i like the most eclectic (genre transcending) and escapist music.
-Dub Fx, Puscifer, Dornenreich, Käptn Peng
-Tool, NIN, Emptyself, Moddi, The Knife
-Amanda Palmer, Robyn, Die Antwoord, Jolly Goods, Bomba Estero
-Tori Amos, The XX, lamb, Toni Kater
-Warsaw Village Band, Menton J Matthews III, Soriah, Angelite
Artists i grew up with (90ies) were much older than me. Perhaps in that way their music didn't actually represent the time it was released in. Today i don't enjoy any of what i grew up with (Public Enemy, Ice-T, Sepultura). I also grew up with music of my older sister (80ies, Madonna, Michael Jackson).
