Discussion: The Elder Scrolls Oblivion

Artifice Orisit

This is just one of many role playing games out there, but the capacity for customization makes it more interesting to discuss than most. I'm also curious to find out if there is an INTP way of doing things, a study of INTP behaviour.

So if you've played it:
What type of character did you play?
How did you go about playing the game?
Any good memories you'd like to share?

Feel free to discuss anything else related.

A bit off topic, but in relation to this, there is this phenomena through left 4 dead. From what I have seen, when playing the game on the internet, you can see peoples personalities surface directly to the top, I'm not sure if its due to the games atmosphere, but with this game, I have seen the players personality, show up correlating to these personality theories. You can clearly see what each type does.

I'm not too sure if any one has played this game at all, but clearly, when in this game, people seem to expose the personalities in a strong sense. But one could say the same thing in a day to day commute on the bus, so I'm not sure if any one has noticed this in some sort of special situation, but any who. When you observe the players, some will save incapacitated players, or leave them to die etc. Each time I observe the players it really fascinates me, because it has a relation to what or how people think, and possibly their mbti preferences ie F/T J/P.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you don't see peoples personality purely in real life, but in this case, the players seem to truely divide between the thinking and feeling categories.

:) valid point, although from here on lets just reffer to the one game or make another thread.

Otherwise this is going to get crazy.

I've got morrowind GOTY and have yet to start the main quest...

There's so much to do! its amazing that I've sunk hundreds of hours into a game and not even started the main storyline. Im playing an rangeresque character with short blade, marksman and unarmoured and its great fun

I made a stealthy avatar that specialized in assasination/breaking and entering. Obviously my favorite quest line was the dark brotherhood. I enjoyed the puzzle elements they added to each kill. Every time I play oblivion I end up playing as a rouge of sorts. Although I am certain that I have yet to do everything there is to do in the stand-alone version of the game, I recently started playing oblivion with the addition of several player made mods. It is interesting to see what the fan base has been able to do with the engine of the game. While many of the mods are of great quality, there are others they simply spawn some god-like sword into the player's inventory. I try to find mods that add to the game without ruining other portions of it. Walking that line can be difficult at times.

I must've played the game for a hundred hours and never done the main quest. I prefer to play as a thief/mage, as my least favourite part of the game is to move around in dungeons and kill stuff, which seems to be what fighters are best at.

I've spent a LOT of time on this game. My first character was similar to an assassin (custom) and I of course did the Dark Brotherhood quest line. Second character was a battle mage (also custom) and I completed the mage's guild, the main quest line, the thieves guild, the dark brotherhood, the warrior guild, and the arena.

I've played oblivion. I thought the game was... dull. It was like... being outside. Maybe I'm stimulation hungry, but I felt like there was a whole lot of boring riding, with just a hint of action every so often. I never much liked the thief quests, but the Assassin one's were the best part of the game, IMO. All in all a decent game, but it got repetitive quickly. It looked pretty, though.

In contrast I enjoyed the "being outside" aspect of the game, just climbing mountains for the view and exploring forests for the alchemy ingredients.

My usual kit:
-Red silk Robe & Hood
-Akaviri Boots & Gauntlets
-Silver dagger or fine steel dagger, poisoned with something lethal
-1 handed katana, enchanted with "drain health" 100pts 1sec
-Illusion, Mysticism, Alteration, Restoration, Destruction spells
-Mortar & pedstal
-Various poisons & potions

I'm surprised people thus far haven't been very magic focused, I know it's slow and expensive but nothing beats it for sheer adaptability.

I have only used magic to complement my avatar's abilities. Giving a theif the ability to see in the dark/detect life is useful for obvious reasons, and healing magic is a nice boon if one is trying to save a potion or two in between fights. While I agree that majoring in magic would give the player an answer to every situation, I like to roleplay my toon and playing a mage seems less interesting too me.

I love oblivion. I use various mods, and I just wish that I could run it on max (or beyond max) graphics without low fps. I would play it far more if I didn't have 20fps on medium graphics. (goddamn 256mb gfxcards)

I'd love to see another Bethesda medieval-fantasy-style game. Fallout 3 was good, but it's fantasy worlds that ring true with me. Greater immersion, bigger worlds, and a greater amount of real role-playing (really fitting into your type of character) and realism (in the sense that a fantasy world can be realistic) is all I ask for.

Offtopic: Another great game that I rarely play is Medieval 2: Total War (with the Stainless Steel 6.1 mod). I love plotting, managing an empire, and commanding armies in battle, but I'm so impatient that I keep starting new games with different factions before I've completed 30 turns max. I keep thinking 'I have an idea, wouldn't it be great to have England's solid opening position; or wouldn't it be great to create a Milanese/Sicilian/Byzantine trade and financial empire; or wouldn't it be great to have Norway's isolated opening position; or wouldn't it be great to have some Middle Eastern all-cavalry army.' etc etc. Thus I keep making new campaigns and never getting any of them done (or truly started for that matter). Really annoying, since I love strategy (and in particular battle strategy - I have several books on military strategy as I love the subject).

Cogni, you inspired me to restart the game and become a mage. It sounds very interesting and fun based on your posts.

Try using restoration spells like "leech health" to replace destruction.

Also learn all the illusion, mysticism & alteration spell, then start combining them.
The effects can be... interesting.

I shall be an explorer of nature that ventures across lands to discover. It will be imperative for me to have nice defensive abilities, for I shall inevitably encounter dangerous enemies when travelling through vast areas.

I have played through many different ways, but more interesting then the character I played as is what I did for fun in it. I would take all my magical items, and dup them plenty. and drop them all over town, then cast a frenzy/haste spell on the town, making them all run around like crazy attacking each other. This same method minus the weapons is really effective in the mage tower for picking up good magical items of the mages without taking any damage, or getting a bounty.

Make my horse invisible and ride from town to town seemingly floating.

Enchant various piece of armor with chameleon so the totals add up to over 100%. This allows me to go around a still take actions while remains totally invisible. You can even get stealth attack bonuses on any enemy including final boss.

Enchant weightless clothes to deal damage to the wearer, and reverse pickpoket someone giving it to them. They will then take damage without laying a finger on them.

I've always found alchemy tedious in both Oblivion and Morrowind (it's not surprise to me that I've always hated crafting in WoW, either), but magic was always my favorite kind of character.

I've never managed, in either game, to make a completely combat-based guy because I'd always end up supplementing him with some destruction magic, and then eventually I'll find that magic is now my main weapon.

Stealth and ranged weapons sucked in Morrowind, but they are very formidable and fun in Oblivion. I also like hand-to-hand for the one-shot stealth punch to the back of he head.

The best thing about magic is finding ways to, er, exploit it. Like making a 100% Charm spell that lasts one second or a 100-point skill boost, like Armorer, that also lasts one second because menus and character interaction technically pause time. Is that cheating?

I never really played as much Oblivion as I wanted to, and I am now going back to it due to this thread. I hope you all are happy.

As is my wont, I'm making a more or less pure mage character.

I also love how counter spells in the game make sense.

Detect Life in that quest where all your enemies are invisible for instance.

hahaha dont't even get me started on Oblivion

that game owns more hours of my life than mostly anything other than sleep and school.

i originally liked playing as a stealth/assassin type character, but the last time i played it, i attempted to make a "perfect character" using the the leveling up process to the fullest in order to max out all stats & attributes.

Great game that I sadly haven't had the time to play properly. I played an INSANE amount of Morrowind though -- I was still in high school when that came out.

I've always liked mage-type characters, although I like the occasional thief/stealth character too.

I'm only like 20 hours into some kind of Wood Elf archer/theif/assassin character. This thread is inspiring me to reroll a mage or something while I still have some time off school.

Also high elf with the birthsign that is best for magic but worst for magic resistance. It's so much fun to be deathly afraid of magic. haha

Try making a "werewolf" class:
hand-to-hand - Offensive
Restoration - Defensive (one of the few ways to max out your restoration skill)
Illusion - Just in case you want to do the whole Predator thing
Stealth - Helps to conserve mana
Mysticism - Likewise, Predator
Focus on Endurance and Speed

Blitzkrieg methodology, hit fast and stay mobile, by accounting for any damage taken by using restoration you'll quickly become adept at it and thus extremely difficult to kill, better still you can use it to enhance your abilities.
