Hello,

as the title says,

I'd be very interested in seeing how you all describe or understand yourselves without having to relate everything to a function.

If people respond, I will too, but not now. And sorry if I don't reply; I don't have much time anymore to spend on the internet and sometimes I read what people say and don't really have anything to say back. Now that I think about it, I guess that's kind of selfish, but eh - oh well.

I love and live the path. I desire to live in ethics. The ethics are a guide to a life of love and compassion. My path is love. I live to love. I love to live. I love to love and I live to live.

A retired madcap. Yeah, that's a noun now.

No worries. I think you're well-respected here.

Lazy, curious, can be rather hot tempered (it's just that it's kinda suppressed. Unhealthy, I know), attention deficit, rather approachable, can be silly at times(usually around friends)...but can be serious at the right time too, easily bored, adventurous.....

I sort of hope not. A little respect for human dignity is nice, but anything more would make me feel like I have something I don't deserve, even if certain people thought I did.

Answer to OP... response to grayman....plausibility...both...

I imagined Redbaron was talking about herself/himself? But if not, I don't much care then, to be honest.

Describe Yourself without Cognitive Functions

I am trapped in the equivocation. Which am I supposed to do?

A) Describe myself, but do so without using my cognitive functions (this will be a challenge as I rely heavily on my cognitive functions to do things like type on this keyboard).

B) Describe myself without describing my cognitive functions, and, describe myself without reference to my cognitive functions.

I'll go with B.

Do I just make a list of attributes that others have said I possess, and focus on the ones that aren't typically cognitive?

In other words:

Cognitive (as so not allowed): smart, intellectually curious, etc.

Not cognitive: kind, loyal, friendly, supportive, empathetic, etc.

You, me, or himself. I don't either, and I did not care to define which it was, I was just framing the possibilities that occurred to me. Perhaps I should not have done so but I thought it interesting how many ways it could be interpreted, which makes it meaningless because it cannot be defined. ... The confusion is much worse than being called a fuckhead. I think I would rather be called a fuckhead then him fucking with my head... ohhhh the pain of madness!... ooooh and the pleasure!!

Those are all fine. I just thought it would be nice to hear people explain themselves without compartmentalizing their behavior into a cognitive function. In other words, if you said you were intellectually curious, you could explain how and in what way and how that creates your personality, rather than taking your behavior and summarizing it as Ti or something similar. It would evince what uniquely makes you you, rather than why we are all the same.

I hope that makes as much sense to you as it does to me.

Isn't that pretty much like writing a personal ad?

It isn't to me. No one has to impress anyone or try to; they can just express themselves.

What's nice about this thread is that everyone who has posted has already participated, even if they didn't intend to. :D

Kind, supportive, happily sad, but mostly just tranquil. I like a good (even if rib-cracking) laugh, enjoy a bit of sadness or bitterness, but value serenity the most, because it powers instead of draining.

All you will ever see about me is a mask.
Everytime during socialization I use a mask to interact. But what is it behind the mask?
Void, pure Void.
The masks change. The Void remains.
I am just an empty shell.

At Work

I come off as a relaxed and entertaining guy, bubbling with ideas that make for an interesting conversation. The ISTJ's around me seem to have difficulty understanding why I can look like a stooge one moment, but then come up with brilliant insights and information the next. I more or less heard that I'm viewed by my management team as a genius, but somewhat erratic and requiring special care. Prone to clam up around authority*.

Coworkers usually view me as a slacker who doesn't do his part. I get too much visibility and interesting projects which they think isn't fair. I have too much money**.

From intimates (wife, son)

Relaxed and easy going on one side (absent minded professor), and hard as nails and driving on the other (type A nutcase), with interludes of a nasty, caustic wit which they find delicious. Supplier of a brilliant answer to anything (which isn't true). A shorter fuse in midlife then I had when I was younger.

From old friends and extended family.

Renaissance Man. A little strange. Unusual. Brilliant. Kind of stupid when it comes to Real Life. Prone to pick hobbies up and drop them for no apparent reason. A "character". Sometimes selfish and self involved. Not interested in other people. Lazy and prone to make mistakes. Just missed being a complete loser.

Concluding thoughts.

I created these lists by pulling up things I've heard and seen over the years on how people have reacted to me. On reviewing the lists unfortunately I think that my extended family and close friends probably understand me the least.

* I've wondered at this. I think it's due to a unreasoned low level anger at having people in a position of authority over me.

** This idea comes from hearing about the electronic toys I buy such as computers and whatnot. Of course I don't go on expensive vacations (they all do, such as spending the summer in France is common), have expensive sports hobbies (I know a retiring guy who budges $4k/year on golf fees, and another who spends more than that on skiing) or fancy cars (mine is 20 years old).

I don't take life very seriously, but I take debate seriously. In general conversation, I am a goofball and enjoy playing with words and making people think about weird things for fun. I don't appeal to authority--I'm kind of an outgoing rebel. I like to get along with everyone and make sure they know I believe I'm at their level no matter how much older (or younger) or more experience (or lack of) they have at something. I'm always changing my perceptions. I'm not very self-conscious. Definitely in the "self-actualization" category of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. I like to remain a bit impressionable so that I can keep my point of view from sticking to the same thing too long. I enjoy meeting new people and talking to them like I already know them--it makes for very interesting interactions and experiences. My purpose in life is to keep it interesting. I also believe in reincarnation--as to eradicate my fear of death so that I can keep a focused and collective thought process and minimize the energy I put into the primitive part of my brain. Also enjoy talking to other people about ideologies and helping people who are in a mental rut because I also gain more ideas and strategies from them to further broaden my perceptions.

I am someone who has never fit in with others, even other weird people. I have degraded others just as others have degraded me, making me the degrader of myself and others. I don't like DOING things, especially things that other people appreciate. My id is becoming more dominant these days. I hate reality, making me detach from the tree and see the forest.

So many of my hopes have not panned out that I disbelieve everything that has ever motivated me to push myself through anxiety to do better things. Everything just seems like crap now.
