The demonoid site is back online(with a few hiccups here and there to be expected).

For those that do not know, it is one of the better sites for torrents(as long as you can get an invite).

Excellent; I've been waiting for months. I should have some invites when they allow generation of new ones; PM if wanted.

Thanks.

This Demonoid"?

http://www.demonoid.com/

What a weird site, how would I know if I even want an invitation? I would hate to waste an invite if it turned out i don't like "torrents' whatever they are - sounds like some type of pastry...

Yet the very idea of it being 'private' irks me and provokes my curiosity.

So Do I want an invite?

If you don't know what torrents are you probably don't want an invite. I'm guessing you don't download much music/movies.

No, I do not download much at all (only have 90 gigs left on my hard drive) I have my computer attached to a Bose, so youtube quality music is not so bad...

I don't think so, but invite-only trackers tend to be much safer by their very nature.

haha, 90 GB is sooo much. I can't even fathom what you would fill your hard drive with if you can say you have "only" 90 GB, and don't download any movies or music.

I agree, though. Youtube (and imeem, before myspace bought it out...) work fine for me and my purposes

Anyway, torrents.

I had much the same reaction, I have an 80GB and I can't figure out how to use it without music and movies. although my friend had a 40GB and he filled it up quickly with games, many of the support programs for games require a few Gigs

Thanks for the link! I do not think I need torrents right now.

I saved all of the material from graduate school and I have thousands and thousands of photos. I figure 90 Gig should last me over a year. But a single 10 minute video can take 2 gig so...

EDIT: speaking of which does anyone know of any Freeware comparable to Quiktime Pro? I would make more videos if i could increase the resolution of my videos to HD quality - as it is I am stuck with ipod quality - which does not do the photos justice...

I've just downloaded Rondellus's 14th century Latin reworking of Black Sabbath, Sabbatum, which in turn may inspire me to buy the CD sometime if I like it.

Torrents are for sampling the unknown if available for purchase or taking music/video that is otherwise completely unavailable for purchase. It's not merely for getting stuff totally free.

Not that I've ever heard Black Sabbath, nor intend to.

So it might be appropriate for someone with eclectic tastes, that occasionally is a conspiracy buff? If so I would appreciate an invite.
On a related topic ( or perhaps not), It seems to me that there are works of genius being posted on the internet that lay ignored in obscurity because they are not of "commercial value". It would be nice to find a site that was dedicated to the discovery of these "masterpieces"...

One has to realize that the 'intelligent' market has always been a very limited market, and being so, relatively lacking in economic incentives. Of course this is no longer true, with the availability of the internet and yet i perceive something of a time lag in the catering to the needs of such an audience/market on a world-wide scale...

Some one should create a search engine of the intelligent - for the intelligent

Well, to be sure my musical taste ranges from Elf Power to Mahler, but truthfully Demonoid has provided me with many minor classical composers --- mainly German, because music from the 18th to 19th century was mainly German --- whom otherwise I'd never have heard of, let alone had the chance to hear. To clarify, I'd feel no obligation to pay copyright dues on a performance where the composer has been dead for a century and the performance was 15 years old. It's not like Verdi or v. Weber can benefit from some performing rights organization raking in cash...

The trouble with conspiracies is that mostly they're true --- not the 9/11 ones maybe --- and mostly they are out in the open. It's not like we don't know Islam wants to be the only religion or that National Media seeks to dumb the populace... But generally such threats don't matter as much as our own reactions to them; whether sentimental denial, outrage or servile acquiescence.

I would really appreciate an invite if any of you has one. I used mininova until it closed recently and they had most of their interesting torrents from demonoid.

Today I generated the maximum of 5 invitations, which will possibly be the max for the next 4 - 6 months.

Two reserved are sent and one is pending. So the first two who want the others should PM fast as they may expire.

To show the utility I've already watched last night's Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory despite the fact that they are unavailable in my country, had I a TV; and even if shown here those episodes would not be screened for a year and that it would not be at a time of my choice.

Hm, I can't access demonoid since January or so. When I type in the address, I only get a blank page with no indication that there ever was a page to begin with. Nobody else has the problem?

Germany has started blocking Demonoid from January 2010

http://www.p2pfreak.com/forum/torre...started-blocking-demonoid-january-2010-a.html

Sad, but true. Odd, as Germany, like the USA, Russia and China has some pretty wild stuff allowed on servers; but then again it seems the anti-download gang target one country at a time --- late last year it was Norway --- until for a while the authorities do their bidding.

After that while things go back to as-you-were, and people just start ignoring the new rules...

All gone, except for the one pending pre-ordered. If not responded to in a week or so, I'll give it to anyone else.

The last is still unclaimed, so the first who wants it can have it.

Bad luck...

Still, write them down somewhere: Demonoid has a habit of wiping them if they aren't claimed. Could be the move to Kiev may stabilize their habits, but I think it's because they are simply jealous of allowing the unworthy to get invites.

Who could think the downloading community contains unworthy elements ?

Demonoid is down again ...

Bummer... your right. Good news: the tracker is still up, and most of their torrents can still be found through search engines like torrentz.

Doesn't really bother me much now though. I've recently started using Usenet. Astraweb's sever allows for either '10$/month unlimited download' or '25$/one-time 180Gigs', plus it has great retention and a ssl option. Combine that with extremely fast speeds, a nicely moderated community for NZBs, better security, and not worrying about a ratio..... Ya, I'm only using Bittorrent when neccessary now. :D

That's true, but I liked the demonoid site -- very clean and no popups.

Hmm, I would pay $10 for the extra security and speed. How fast are the downloads? I can get 1.5Mbs max from uTorrent typically.

I hope demonoid dies forever. The staff that took over after the CRIA shut them down that first time is comprised entirely of the most ignorant and incompetent people I have ever seen. After that, all the goodness that was at demonoid died too. The only good torrent sites left are private (which I may or may not have access/invites to ).

If you download like your life depends on it though, Usenet is the only option worth looking at.

I suppose it depends on your end, what you can handle and how you set it up. Like I said, I'm new to it, so can't say for sure. However, just to get an idea.... I get about the same speed(1.5Mbs) as you with uTorrent, and with the astraweb server I get about 5Mbs. That, more or less, means a movie(700MB) in just under 20 minutes.

Also, I apologize for leaving out an important detail. The 10$/month plan allows for an unlimited amount of downloading, but cuts the speed to 1Mbs. You want the 11$/month plan if you want both unlimited download and unlimited speed. Hopefully the 1$ won't break you. ;)

Hell, I'd try the 25GB for 10$ plan first, just to try it out and make sure you like it. Both the 180GB and 25GB pay-once plans have unlimited speeds. I'd also recommend SABnzbd(I love freeware) for a newsreader since you are coming from BitTorrent.

To add the the above post:
Nzbs.org is a very good free NZB indexer (nzb's are like the .torrent files of usenet). It requires you to sign up, but it's completely free.

Ok. Sounds good, I'll check it out.

Until then If anyone knows of any good private torrent trackers please post, or PM me. I would use Pirate Bay but I can't stand them

can someone please send me an invite? I have been trying to get a hold of one for a while now, but I don't know anyone who has them. Demonoid is awesome, but without an account it is way too much trouble trying to download their stuff.
