Do you have them? Personally I don't, don't even go up at the same time each morning or eat breakfast, I exercise at the gym sporadically but it's cause I'm bored, so doesn't count as a habit... Are daily habits good to have? Adds a sense of flow to life?

I don't have any habits, however I do certain things in the same way or mostly in the same sequence because it makes sense to do so.

For example, I wake up, I dress up, I turn on my PC, I heat up some water. It makes sense to do so, and I do it in the most efficient and time-saving sequence every morning. If I had juice or something bottled, I wouldn't heat up the water. If I left my PC on, I wouldn't turn it on, if I slept with my clothes on, I wouldn't dress up.

I don't hate doing all that every morning, I find it enjoyable, as I do it efficiently. I like efficiency and I respect it; efficiency to me is very important. However, I know people who hate getting up, dressing up, making coffee or whatever the fuck they drink every morning, etc.. I can't understand it - if you hate it, why do it?

I don't think I have any other sequential activities. Except most of the time launching my browser, file browser and sometimes mail client. That's not always the case, however.

I wonder if this is rather the lack of discipline really; and where is the border when habits become actual disciplined routine?

Whenever I need routines I adopt them. I presently need several so I've adopted them. Whenever (or wherever in my life) I don't need them, I don't have them.

I wake up every day
I go to sleep at the end of every day
I live every day
I think every day
I typically eat every day

But strict habits? No. None of these things happen at regular times or according to any sense other than 'when I feel like it'.

Yes, during the semester I have many habits that I establish after lots of strategizing. As the semester continues I often find more efficient methods and action plans with which to accomplish my goals and so adopt and discontinue habits accordingly. I wasn't always this staminal and consistent, though, and my formerly incompetent grades (relative to my potential) reflected that.

So yes, I believe that daily habits can be good to have. I don't miss the life of unproductive whims that I once chose to have, although I do believe that we need to designate some time in our lives for things like spontaneity and open-endedness.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I'm a very spontaneous person. If a certain hobby, interest or lifestyle choice requires me to keep a routine, I'll stick to it without a problem. It's very rare for me to keep my routines for a long time, though.

I sometimes wish I was a more structured person. I'm very mercurial.

I greatly enjoy the consistency and predictability of most days. Usually I throw some animal protein and vegetables on the stove first thing in the morning, which often happens to be the afternoon, then I slurp some coffee over emails and articles. After that I'll enjoy some music and solve some crossword puzzles or whatever. I then commit to writing or reading for a few hours, after which I might spend some time around other people (gasp) via watching the news - I especially like Chris Matthews' show - or simply shooting the breeze. Sometimes I'll Skype with my younger sister but that's more of an anomaly than bankable occurrence. Whenever I spend too much time with folks though, even when that time is enjoyable, I feel terribly drained later in the day. I may watch a movie or meditate or read some short stories before sleep to cool down. I should perhaps get back into running. I've already reacquainted myself with journaling, which makes me sound like a nancy but whatever. That's about it for the daily routine though.

I have habits, but not really routine. I find it difficult to do things without justification, though there are some exceptions. I shower as soon as I get up almost every day, though this can be anywhere between 8:00 and 12:00am. I usually eat something before going and getting all my shit done. I brush my teeth whenever I'm about to leave the house.

You may word this in such a way as to appear unrestricted, but what you describe sounds exactly like a routine. You heat water for you drink every day... well... you start the day with a drink for one.
Do you get up around the same time most days?
Do you eat your meals at around the same time most days?
Do you shower/brush hair/ brush teeth in any sort of patterned fashion?

The only routine I have is waking up and going to the bathroom right after I wake up. Also, I usually watch my favorite tv shows for an hour before I go to bed.

I try to keep daily habits and a schedule of things I have to do each day.

But I end up postponing everything and falling into a routine of doing nothing I planned.

Yes, having a job and a family forces it on me. Get up, start working, have breakfast, go to work for a few hours, come home, exercise, have lunch, work some more, relax (watch TV, read, play music, etc), go to sleep. Day after day ...

My INTP kid doesn't want to do anything on the weekend other than hang out at home on the computer, so unfortunately it's hard to get out as much as I used to

I don't start the day with a drink: I heat up the water and wait for over half an hour until it gets cool enough to drink without burning my mouth.

No.

No.

Definitely not.

That's not routine, that's a natural occurrence caused by the need to take a piss, your body, not your mind. You can not do it, but it's irrational not to.

What's the point of scheduling then? It's a waste of time in your case...

You can still vary things if you choose to do so. Of course you may receive negative reactions or surprise/shock reactions; just another reason to pick your significant other very carefully.

You can still go out, alone or with your wife/friends/whatever else you may like. If the going out wasn't favored by you beforehand, I don't see why it was mentioned in the first place.

Trying to stick to any kind of schedule drives me crazy but there are things I do every day: stretching/Yoga, bathing/personal hygiene (brushing my teeth at least), prayer, meditation. One of the first things I do each morning is drink a large glass of water since humans tend to dehydrate slightly over a sleep period. I usually listen to the radio or podcasts while I work and watch a little tv in between. I like to nap when I can. I eat whenever I'm hungry.

Repetition bores me to tears so I vary my food, workout routines, running routes, arena work, etc., as much as possible. I might get up around the same time but at the same time every day would kill me - one of the very few things I don't like about long distance hiking is having to rise with (or before) the sun so often.
