Do you guys enjoy cooking? I love cooking. I love raiding my fridge and putting things together to create a palette blasting meal! I have just recently been able to cook though. When I was younger, I used to love watching people cook, but when I try cooking myself it would become a disaster! I think that was because I hadn't developed my S much yet and wasn't organized and detail oriented enough to handle cooking. Now I can combine my N and S to create wonderful creative and devastatingly delicious dishes! I watch the food network most of the time. I LOVE IT!

If I could handle the intense pressure of cooking in a restaurant I think I would probably be a chef. Do you guys think an S type or N type would make a better chef? I can see an S type being a chef because they are so organized and they can multi-task. But on the other hand, N's can create new and wonderful dishes!

What about you guys? Do you guys cook too? Do you guys love it?

I was a classically trained chef for many years. I was definitely happier working smaller restaurants as I could sometimes do whatever menu I wanted (One place we put the menu on a small blackboard for the wait staff to take around to tables. I could change whatever I wanted from day to day.

I've worked high volume restaurants too and it is brutal! Challenging also which is good but it's not something you'd want to do for more than 6 months. The longest I worked at one was 8.

I did 2 years at culinary school which was a BLAST! About 20 minutes in a classroom, 4 hours cooking and then you get to eat the results! How can you lose?

I though one time about opening a cooking advice thread but something told me then as it tells me now that some people on here will ask odd questions I couldn't answer :-[

Are you still a chef, IB? Do you think INTP's would be a good fit as a chef?

Off and on. I got a bad back and bad legs that make standing for more than 20 minutes straight difficult. I do special events here and there sometimes. A small party etc.

INTPs could be a chef as we can almost anything else and like anything else, it has it's qualities that are good for us and not so good. Depends on environment mainly. I don't think mass production is the best way to go for our types unless you have a say in the product and how it will be prepared. We're not recipe followers, that's baking (weights and measurements). We are good at creating and that part is awesome. So yes, being a chef can be good for an INTP.

I love cooking. I'm so glad that I managed to get into an apartment with a full kitchen during college. Cooking has definitely helped my Te, thinking in units, doing things in a step by step format and overall being more organized. I still need to find a way to cook without dirtying half the dishes in the kitchen though. :o

As much as I love cooking, I wouldn't cook in a restaurant unless it were really small. I don't handle cooking stress very well. I'd get all scatterbrained and miss an important ingredient or something. Cooking is definitely a labor of love to me, so I subconsciously do better if I'm cooking for friends and family. As for the S vs. N question, I don't think either one would be better, only different.

I hate the washing up and I hate cooking. It's a chore. I only cook when there's nothing conveniently edible. Actually I'd rather go without food than cook.

Gawd, how can people find cooking a pleasure... it's so... mundane. There's no challenge there and the purpose of cooking is to fill the stomach. And god, don't start me on the cleaning up!

Ironically, I cook pretty well (or so my mum and brother says. My dad says I need to put more salt but I don't believe in unhealthy amounts of sodium) and sometimes I cook for the family (but not after a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time procrastinating).

When I marry, I'm going to make sure my husband loves cooking. If not, I need a maid. hurhurhur.

PS: Nothing to do with MBTI I think. I'm just extremely lazy.

I'm a pretty crappy vegetarian. I mainly exist off cereal, salads, raw vegetables, PB&J, beans & rice in various forms, spaghetti..

I know someone who's an amazing vegan chef but she's very much an extrovert and commands attention at all times. Which is hard for me to deal with. I kind of want to date either a chef or a masseuse sometime in the future. Regardless, in the coming months I plan on refining my cooking skill because it would add a lot to my life.

I tend to cook something nice to eat once a week. Other days, just have quicker to make items. I was always good at baking, just follow the recipe...

I am new to cooking though. I got a cookbook (Joy of Life) that helps immensely, and I look at it, even for making an omelette (just to make sure that I get the basic concepts correct) Once you understand the concepts, is fun frolic.

But takes time. And my stomache say no time. :(

But a good meal I believe is a work of art. And eating is the best job an art critic can have. If it is good art. -sigh-

cooking is awesome, i only like to do it when I wanna do it and only if theres someone to clean the dishes afterward, being lazy with skin allergies I hate doing dishes, I'd probably still be doing pizza delivery if I didn't have skin allergies and doing dishes is one of the driver's main jobs

for an unskilled job level I found pizza delivery awesome, pretty decent INTP job if you can drive, and don't mind dealing with stupid/young co-workers and managers that could potentially hate you cuz you make more than them in tips sometimes

I can follow recipies, but I hate having to get all the ingredients out. I prefer to have someone do all that for me before I cook. It's weird... I love cooking, but have preparing for the cooking. I can't really explain it in a way that makes much sense.

I always use recipes as a guideline but rarely follow to the letter. I've been pursuing a gluten-free lifestyle and also I very rarely eat red meat anymore. I only drink beer maybe 2-4 times a year so it gives me an excuse to drink my favorite liquors. I haven't been doing very good lately since going gluten-free is so damn expensive. When I'm able to stick to it for more than a couple weeks eating gluten-free acts like a light anti-depressant for me.

Lost in my thoughts
I've tried cooking before with...interesting results. Oh boy...
I do enjoy it, though! I always try and experiment to see what will happen (tofu + barbecue sauce? ham and jam? yes.) Sadly, it doesn't usually turn out very well :p.

I'd have to say, the most surprising success I've had was mixing jellied cranberry sauce and green tea ice cream, very tasty

Well now random mixes of ingredients aren't going to turn out well very often. Know the flavor of ingredients and figure out how they might compliment each other. Also know proper methods for cooking and how it affects your ingredients. Ham and jam may not be such a bad idea depending on the types of each. Most pork products go well with fruits and you can find many dishes featuring that combo. Tofu can go with just about anything as it has so little flavor on it's own. The texture may gross you out though.

Once you learn methodologies of cooking, you'll find you won't need recipes. I'll read them in cookbooks and magazines but never consult them when actually cooking. If you consult cookbooks put out by restaurants and try your favorite recipe, you probably won't end up with quite the same dish as you do at the restaurant. That's because they don't measure out ingredients to any exacting detail (and sometimes they leave something out) nor do they have recipes themselves. When I'm asked for a recipe for a dish I've made, I end up having to guess at how much of anything I use because I don't actually measure anything out.

Baking is another subject entirely. Bakers have to be more exacting and thus they are a different classification than chefs. Try throwing ingredients together for a loaf of bread without measuring and you get hardened goo. Try throwing ingredients together for Chicken Marsalla and you'll probably come out with something that is at least edible.

Chef's cook, bakers bake.

I have a knack for figuring out combos that work based on taste and smell. I personally feel that I make some of the best drinks ever if I have enough drinks/mixers to choose from but I don't know how to make any actual drinks. So true about baking, its almost a science.
