Being an INFJ, my inferior function is Se. It's said that the inferior function shows up in times of stress. Most of my stress comes when a plan has to be changed but there's not sufficient time to make changes to the plan. (ex.: I'm having friends over, but one of them needs a ride. The friend who needs a ride tells me 10 minutes before we're about to hang, and I want to try to get them to my house) I usually end up running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to find a way to get them to my house, and then I isolate myself and try to come up with a new "plan." Is that my inferior Se? Or Ni? Or both?

Se is always awake. Se is part of our conscious cognitive configuration, ergo it is always active if we are indeed in one off our INFJ mindsets. Without Se we wouldn't be conscious, or at least not INFJ-conscious. Don't individualize functions like you are doing now. Se like Ni are merely perceptive functions. They have to be bonded with Judgment and contrasted with their opposites. So to individualize cognitive behavior, think of it like this: Se-Ti (Concrete adaptive perception being developed by Ti). Or... Ti-Se, Ti judgment being developed by Se constantly backing Ti up. Also note that Ti Se and Ni Fe need to have 1 over the other. Thus it is either Directive (Ni Fe > Se Ti) Or adaptive (Se Ti > Ni Fe). But never ever, individualize 1 single function, as it is meaningless because it says nothing about the mindset.

With stress in the INFJ, Adaptive Se-Ti is being meant. (Se Ti > Fe Ni). The behavior you explained is typical INFJ upon stress behavior, meaning.. That it is a process we usually fall into (It is a reaction to our own cognitive behavior). But the actual cognitive behaviour is not Function linked as you are expanding on our reaction to our own cognitive behavior rather than the actual cognitive behavior. That is because you can change the way you react to your own cognitive behavior but not the actual cognitive behavior of a mindset. I hope that makes sense to you.

Yes, I understand that my Se is "always on" but I was wondering if that chicken-with-its-head-cut-off feeling is a result of my interaction with inferior Se.

This eight-function, four-conscious-function theory defies Jung. In my opinion it is false.

This article should have what you are looking for.

The short answer is yes. Reality (Se) is not aligned with your idealized perception (Ni) of it.
