We had a nice Chat session jsut now and from time to time it came up, that we would be much better off using real irc instead of that crappy flashchat.

So i am making this thread in order to let us (in the chat it was Jesin, shadowmouse and me, whoever else wants can join of course) figure out some basic things, so that we can write a little Howto for all the people who do not want to become a geek to participate ;) (which they don't have to).

I'll leave it at that for the moment, coming back later with information etc...

EDIT:
Hi,
We have a channel on a network now for about a month, and we have up to 15 people in there regularly.
It is always great fun and sometimes we even talk seriously about some interesting things ;)
But i would still like to see more people in there. There are some from the forum who i miss there (and who have been on the flashchat-sessions last year) and we have lotsa new members who are welcome too to come in the chat as well.
The connection-data:
Server: irc.ecnet.org
Channel: #intpforum.com

There are a few webfrontends to irc for the people who (not yet) do not have a client. Two are on the page of the network itself, ecnet.org, and one is Mibbit.com. These are pretty easy to set up. If someone likes to install a client you can ask in this thread or come with a webfrontend in the channel and get help there.

So please, people, come and join ;)

A good introduction can be found here. It suggests mirc as irc client for windows, but i dunno, i didn't hear good things about it...

But we will find a good client for windows.

Snail said her demands on it were: Paralell windows for different rooms/private discussions, nice gui (graphical user interface) with lots to click, and not to type commands ;), and some other things i think i am forgetting here.

I think this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Another question is which server we should use. Normally i would say for example freenode, though this is a very full server, kinda annoying (you know, like nicks already being used and stuff).
Anyone a good idea?

My default irc client since ages has been xircon with the kano script. It's an old one and a bit geeky.... tradition... :)

I suppose any IRC network would do... unless there aren't any services present like a chanserv, nickserv etc.. so ircnet wouldn't be sufficient.

True, maybe some smaller networks would be good as well (like euirc or something).

We 'geeky' types do have our clients (i for one use irssi), but we need to recommend some easy, gui-oriented client for windows for the non-geeks ;)

An irc client is a matter of taste, I think. Perhaps some might find visualirc nice to use..
Or take your pick from this page

Yeah, we already postet that link in the cht, but snail thinks it looks like 'gibberish' :D
Someone (shadowmouse) offered mibbit.com, as a browser frontend without java or flash. But i think it is probably not what she seeks ;)

Mibbit looks good. Easy to use, doesn't require installing anything, relatively polished, etc.

Snail, however, has refused to accept anything that does not allow her to see multiple private message windows at the same time, so we have to find something like that for her before she'll switch from Flashchat.

Maybe we first figure out which network to use and such...
I'm looking through some networks webpages, reading their policies etc....

Well, not much actually. I, uhm, procrastinated it away...:D

Of course it would be great if we had our own server, but that is probably not an option.
Maybe we can use this one, it is the network the intpcentral is usng for its chat. they seem small and friendly. (Judging from the wiki)

Not IRC I guess, but what options are there for linking up by voice? Would anyone be interested?

Well, for once i think it would be much more 'work' to arrange that. And then i think much less people would like that than text chat...?!

if all you need is a simple chat group, why not create a room within meebo.com (you can use your pre-existing msn, aol, yahoo, accounts to log in. If you want voice/video skype or stickam is probably the way to go.

Well, we have a flashchat in this forum, but we (Jes and me, mostly) wanted to get a 'real' chatroom, so of course irc. That would be really little work, but we are INTPs, we weren't able to get a forum banner although that thread lived for a long time

Sadly i will be away in some 10 hours or so, and probably only online after Newyear...

OK, I've set up a channel on irc.ecnet.org: #intpforum.com
Perhaps lor should register so I can transfer ownership of the channel?

Thing is, there's another intp channel on there. #intp... it's pretty crowded, so that one could be a lil overwhelming for those not used to irc...
nevertheless, very amusing

Yea, i visited that chan once (it is the one from the intpcentral, though they said that today it is a pretty loose connection. But they are all very known to each other as it seemed, so i don't think it would be so good if we came there too (to that channel).

So, has our channel been used yet?

Ok folks. Thanks to the decisiveness of Jules we now have a home in irc-land ;)
Server: irc.ecnet.org
Channel: #intpforum.com

Let's get to help people actualy find and use the chan. ;)
It was mentioned above, you'll need an irc-client to join in. There are a lot of those around. I prefer a client which i install on my computer, but there are webinterfaces whicch allow you to use irc, for example mibbit.com (which i did not try out, but it looked fairly decent and useful, and it is not flash!).

Perhaps everyone interested and not knowing how to get into an irc-channel may ask some questions here. Of course cosidering the vast number of clients, we can't say "This one client is the BEST", it is, like always with software, a question of personal aspects. Everybody sets different priorities and has different needs, so different software will satisfy them.

So the irc thing is happening - now!

And I resolve to get an irc-client... one day... soon....

does this mean forking out money or is there free software? (I'm completely ignorant and I'm going to ask stupid questions.)

Free software, definitely. I'm using Xchat currently, comes with my current Ubuntu install by default... if it isn't apt-get install to victory! (I remember reading somewhere that you use ubu LoR...)

EDIT: This should be stickied to the top of the lounge so people find out about it, not buried in the Tech forum...

Alright, taken to The Lounge and stickied.

Lor, tell us what operating system you are using and what you expect from the client.
Ok, well, the latter you won't have to answer, since you hardly can have expectations when not knowing what it will be...;)

In the meantime, there is this webinterface mibbit.com. I don't know it, but i'll go check it out now. Perhaps that is something for you.

Aye, I've just had a look. It was available but not installed, so just installing now.

Mind you I'll be toddling off for some sleep before trying it out...

Ta!

ie: yes I use Ubuntu and yes I've found Xchat.

Hey Ogion, sorry for the sudden departure, my modem's a nightmare and should be shot (or replaced). It was a great convo.

Thanks to you and Jesin for the tech support. I might come back with doubts and questions :D

(and the PM features don't work for me tonight)

Uhm, either you got that not right, or i didn't get it ;) Perhaps you mean DCC, which is a mode of irc "Direct Client-to-Client", meaning not going through the server. I think the normal irc-channels get logged, i am not sure, though. They do get logged on the client side of the participants, though i think you excluded that by "third-party".

Nothing gets (or should get) logged unless its by one of the participants of the chat, whether it be in a channel or a private conversation.
The servers just facilitate, the don't log the chats. (They could log incoming and outgoing connections and the client scans, though)

And I use Miranda. So I guess we all have different IRC-clients now? How interesting.

Well, I still try to figure out how to be on two different IRC-servers at the same time.
