I quite liked Pitfall: The Mayan Adventures. It got pretty tough towards the end though. I've yet to meet someone who's finished the whole game.

would emulator count, ulysses? I'd be willing to give it a try, but if it's really that hard, I'd probably get frustrated and use savestates heavily

I never played the original NES, but I played the hell out of Super NES. Here's a few I played alot of...

- Super Mario Bros. 2
- Madden '94 (damn I feel old!)
- Paper Boy
- F-Zero
- NBA Jam
- Kirby

The graphics were bad but there were alot of good games.

Yes, I can even send you the ROM if you like.

The furthest I've got is the level where you have to fight the two Jaguar bosses. I think it's possible to get further than that if you're quick and determined enough.

Oh, i forgot about Contra!, Maybe I should have included that on my list. I read on a site once that Contra is one of the hardest games on the NES. Me and my cousin use to beat it 3 times a day:D., Now Super C, thats a hard-ass game.

I see a lot of my favorites have already been posted here. No one has mentioned the Castlevania games yet I see. Those ones would be near the top of my list.

Also these

Bionic Commando (challenging but very good)
Duck Tales
Excitebike
Faxanadu
Final Fantasy (the one that started it all)
Megaman 2, 3, 4, 5
Metroid
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Ninja Gaiden (the cut scenes in this game were awesome)
P.O.W.
R.C. Pro-Am
Robocop 1, 2
Strider (another great side scroller)
Super Mario 2, 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

i know it wasnt created specifically for the NES.. but Marble Madness is still fucking awesome.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Rampage.
and, of course: Dragon Warrior.

What's wrong with Donkey Kong Country 3? Admittedly 2 is the best (by miles) but 3's still a decent game.

Six stories up.
Dr. Mario.

I hope that it's NES and not SNES.

Mostly because of the family tournaments that I always won.

well.. i grew up on 2, and so i had high respects for the donkey kong country series.. and once i acquired and played 3.. ... it was just such a let down coming after the 2nd.

I agree, but I thought the standard of all the Donkey Kong's was quite high. The music on DKC2 is definitely the best as well.

I know this is a SNES game but Earthbound anyone? I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, it stood out as the best game to me. A few people I play with and me did a cover of Pokey Means Business from the soundtrack, havn't got a video but heres the original YouTube- Pokey Means Business beats any final fantasy track imo ;)

I played through Earthbound actually. Quite epic game.

To stay on topic I would say that the best NES games ever was Zelda and Super Mario Bros 3.

I agree with Zelda, there really are a lot of good NES games though. Other ones I liked that are less well known that I like a lot are Rygar, and 8-Eyes (sort of a Castlevania rip-off, but a game I still really enjoy none-the-less). There was a King's Quest game that got ported to NES which was quite good, I think it was V. The Mario games 1-3 were all really good in my opinon. There were a lot more good NES games too, and even with their extremely bad graphics by today's standards I find many of them I can still enjoy.

i honestly dont find the first zelda to be that great of a game at all. i understand that zelda as a series is really good, but i think the first one is only getting this rating because of the series in general.
i found battle of olympus to be better than the first and second zelda.

whoever posted maniac masion.. you get a +1 from me.
i forgot (how do you forget this game) about that game.
and, honestly its one of the most entertaining single player adventure games of all time imo.

Man you guys were SPOILED as children! All I had were Super Mario and Duck Hunt! I say Duck Hunt is #1 because I am able to suck less at it (3 inches from the tv screen = YES) with little training. Oh the humiliation when the dog laughs at you!

Recent flash remakes give me pure joy when he pops out of the grass with a duck in each hand.
