Are you sure you're their favorite student when you hate reading anything they're interested in showing you? Sounds like you're their least favorite student who happens to have talent.

I remember one of my english teachers thinking I forged an essay because it was "too good" for one of her students to have written it. I was horribly misplaced.

right right. i can see where you'd think that, and useually thats the case, but in 10th grade my english teacher nominated me for this like....tea ceremony that all the teachers had with their "favorite" students, and i had a D average at the same time.

throughout that whole year i would write letters to the teacher because it was an extra credit assignment for each 6-week grading period, i just got really used to doing that and ended up writing a letter every few days....so yeah.

Ive had a lot of teacher go cry over why I'm not focused, they always think that their doing something wrong, I hate that it sucks.

It's not my case but I know what you mean. There's another INTP in my literature class, and he never does any homework because he forgets. However, the teacher loves him because he seems to always make good comments on books the teacher likes (they share taste in books and the teacher feels someone cares about his class).
Still, he's about to fail, for not doing homework and occasionally sleeping in class. So yeah.

I had to resit an English exam when I was 10 because I think they thought I cheated. I never heard anything about the re-sit, I suppose they were satisfied.

But following that the English teacher I got built up my confidence, she would encourage me to read things and she encouraged me into debating. I was very gifted at speeches for one reason or another, and she'd make me do them. She also used to ask a lot of rhetorical questions, which looking back was a great thing for me.

Yeah I've had many female teachers cry over the same thing. It extended beyond high school into tertiary education.

I spent a year at community college doing the work at an above-average level, going only to classes I thought were required after a few weeks of proving to the class I wasn't as stupid as I appeared to be. This frustrated her and the other teachers, so on the last day despite all my work, she said she would fail me.

I told her you can't fail someone because of their percieved attitude when my work stands up on it's own. She said she didn't care, and that "I WILL RESIGN BEFORE PASSING YOU"

Obviously this made me mad, and I told her that I'd fight with every part of me, since I had nothing to lose anymore. She told me not to bother.

So I went up the chain of command, speaking to the highest person in the chain, and eventually they backed down. I passed, and was able to goto University. Bitch didn't retire, mean old cunt.

I should probably reveal at this point my Mother got a masters in English, and my Dad got ranked in the top 1% of the country when he did his exams. Dad was apathetic in university and did the bare minimum, whereas Mum was a high-achiever and always wanted to compete and excel. The differing views caused my Mum to encourage me to come first at everything, to which I'd get rewards. After a while my Dad discouraged award incentive because he believed learning was the gift in and of itself. Obviously this application of logic doesn't work when a student is in a high-school who caters to the mediocre, and motivation is actually a pretty good way to make the apathetic teenager work harder.

Oh well, I'll know how to raise my kids to their potential.

I remember most of my teachers besides a couple of conservative teachers, with an extreme case of ageism.
All tended to like me alot, wanted to help me, thought I was bright, brilliant, and even very clever

They somehow respected my opinion above rest of the classes opinion.. Probably because I had an educated opinion and did not just spout all kinds of biased nonsense that either my friends or parents were spouting.

And I was lazy as fuck, to be honest. Never did my homework, unless it interested me. I was "that guy" that was almost sleeping in the back of the room. But I always had an opinion in class. One of my teachers even volunteerd to become my mentor. To try and help me out, get me on the "right track"

In my opinion I was on the right track, I participated in the class, and I got out with top grades In everything but math
(which I hate.... Alot, and I'm honestly not very good at it either.)

I always worked my ass off in school. Part of this was fear. My Dad would kick my ass if I didn't perform. But, part of it was something else. If I worked hard, and got good grades, and teachers liked me, etc., etc., then I got all the positive attention I wanted. But, more importantly, if I was going well, people LEFT ME ALONE. When I did poorly, everyone was always in my business, asking me lots of pointless questions about my feelings, etc.

So, I just excelled and got what I wanted: isolation.

If it's something I'm interested in, I'll put everything I have into it.

However, this rarely happens so I've been doing the bare minimum nowadays. I used to work my ass off to get good grades, but now I just laze off and still get the same grades because usually what I answer in the first place is right and there's no need to check it over and rework it a million times.

I've had many teachers, who said that I am very bright and intelligent. And (iirc) every time they said that they also expressed their disappointment, that I do not come to my full potential. I'm usually good to very good at participating in class but I almost never do homework. One teacher even said I should be unhappy about my grade. :D

The only case in which I have the feeling, that my grade does not correspond to my actual performance is math, as the teacher gives grades according to how good she "knows" the students are, not how much they say. So I have the feeling I don't deserve my good grade.

It happened both to me (in college, on a philosophy course) and to my son (on a social studies essay.) You meant "plagiarized," right, not forged? :-)

Yep. I hated every book I was assigned this year, save for Huckleberry Finn, which is a great statement about the world. I write pretty good essays too, and I never proofread mine wither, but I generally don't get Cs. What do you mean by "Proofread?" What is wrong with your essays that they require proofreading?

I can relate, except my teacher hated me and I never got any d-fs in English.

Can totally relate. In college my English teacher pulled me aside after one class and said verbatim:

"For f*&k's sake, Steve, if only you turned up regularly and applied yourself you'd be my best student."

Oops. Respect to him for being so frank with me though.

In my English class, I have between a B+ and A-. Essays, I usually get in the high 70's, same with vocabulary exams, but everything else I get mid 90's. (exams on books that don't include vocabulary, writing a short story (which I often do very well on), presentations in front of the class (which I used to hate, but by now I've adapted to them. - I usually like those because I do well on them now, losing points for things like saying um and not looking up from my notes.), etc...) Basically, while I don't do well on essays and structured writing assignments, I do well on creative assignments.

All up in that zone.

In my limited experience of INTP's I think alot of them are naturally good writers and/or literary thinkers, and that this is as much, if not more true a generalization than the math/nerd stereotype.

To me, the marks/ mandatory homework part of school doesn't mesh with a subject like English. Sometimes you get something and its good, and sometimes you don't or it isn't working with you. You can't always do something for every fucking thing the teacher gives you. Sure, you can come up with something if you fake it but I doubt any INTP has the motivation or energy to do that. Hence, C's and D's, while being valued highly for what you do put in.

In high school I remember a number of classes where I didn't do half of the assignments but the teachers would give me marks 'somewhere in the middle' of my actual coursework versus my ability.

Just think about it from the teacher's perspective. They specialize and have at least a little bit of passion for the subject they teach. Do you think they value a persistent but relatively dull student, or a student who understands their subject closer to the way they themselves understand it?

In my own little universe...
I am indeed favoured by my English teacher. Nothing we ever read in class is below my level of reading. I would be reading H.P Lovecraft at home while reading 'Of Mice and Men' in class. I would always fight the urge to let out a loud sigh of exasperation when anybody in the class couldn't read a word, or asked for a definition. From my observations, these people were mainly girls.
I actually got good grades from coursework. A's and B's without even trying. One essay was: 'Describe how M.Night Shyamalan presents the themes of isolation, communication and redemption in The Sixth Sense'. I got an A* without knowing what I was doing.
The teacher saw potential for me to be getting an A* in everything, and tried to push me to do so. Being naturally lazy, I didn't react much to his encouragement.
I've just finished my GCSE exams, and know I've got at least a B. Could've done better.
The same teacher does the A-level course for English literature. I've chosen it as an option, and already read all the books on the syllabus. I predict more pushing from the teacher when I start the course, but don't think it'll have much effect.

Apologies to anyone who does not understand GCSEs, A-levels, coursework and the like. I'm in no mood to explain the intricacies of British education.

Huh. My literature teacher hated me in high school. I slept through class and then passed with good grades by writing really good essays. She said I couldn't just skate by on talent my whole life. After discovering a friend of mine was using Cliff's Notes in order to pass his essay on Grapes of Wrath I realized the teacher's study guide for that book was disturbingly similar to the Cliff's Notes. I lost all respect for her.

No, the whole thing was in fact an extremely long signature as I had grown tired of being me and ventured to capture the identity of the man with world's longest name, but this plan was foiled due to my inability to attain his SSN/anything else, and my teacher's suspicious nature blah blah yes that's what I meant and now I feel silly. :-(

I was in school more than 20 years ago, but I remember being given an essay assignment in which we had about 2 weeks to do it in. In true INTP style, I waited until the last minute and did the whole thing in about 2 hours on a Sunday night. I was given top marks for it and then got called in because they thought it was too good for me to have written it. I didn't know whether to feel insulted or impressed.

I was never a teachers favourite though, I was way too introvert to be even remotely amenable to that concept. I also hated their mandatory reading materials because they never included things like electromagnetic pulse beams, subspace particle driven Wolf Class fast attack cruisers or women in metal bikini breastplates wielding broadswords or fireballs. :D

Typing from my phone so I apologize for any errors in advance.

This thread is great, it reminds me of my high school English teachers. Pretty much like everyone else I have read so far, I was a student that aced tests, but had a c or d average. Though, the reason for me was simply not going my homework. I remember my teacher coming up to me and saying, "Chris, I don't get it. You're brilliant, but you just don't seem to care. It's frustrating."

In a way I believe I was his favorite, I answered questions better than most, always knew the material, was a good participant in class, he was just disappointed that I wouldn't do homework. I was probably second in favouritism, add there was another guy similar to me, only he was a perfectionist in ask his work, and he did his homework. He would always call on one of us to answer the tougher questions, especially philosophical ones.

I realize now how childish I was then, and would change it if I could I back, but Meh, that's all behind me now.

Yes, I was.

But thats because I was the only introvert in a class of football hooligans, and I was rather humble about my stories and essays.

Though sometimes he would read them, stare at me, then ask 'Where you in a funny mood when you wrote this?'

Bwehehe.

I always done well in English actually...

Yes. And it was annoying. Several teachers insisted on a writing career, which I resented, because I wanted nothing of the sort. The worst was the one that drew me aside during the time slot for the AP Literature exam testing to express personal disappointment in the fact that I was not taking the exam, and that I was wasting a good deal of talent, blah blah.

I found them all annoyances who wanted to be kingmakers.

This happened to me in grade school, and later I raised a few eyebrows in college. It only ever bothered me if it was someone I respected making the accusation.

I do remember that. My English teacher asked me if I wrote a paper by myself, to which I replied yes, and some of my friends backed me up. As is true with most INTPs, I am a good writer, but a terrible speaker.

In my English class I don't know whether or not I was a favorite, because the teacher, toward the end of the year, wouldn't call on me much because.. I was always raising my hand and I guess she was trying to get everybody to participate equally xD I try not to be shy in class and participate in the discussion, and like all of you I wrote advanced essays without trying. Once we had to write a "Christmas Memory" with various aspects based off a piece by T. Capote. Instead of it being biographical, I wrote it as a fictional piece. I got it back ungraded, unlike everybody else's, and when I asked her about it she just said that everything was perfect, and she just wanted to discuss it with me instead xD She would always encourage me and this other INTP in my class to join the school's literary magazine, and so on. He shared her taste in books, and apparently he was as fabulous a writer as I was (but I've read him.. not quite :3), and she would always get so excited about him when he did something. Of course, he never talked unless he was asked a question, so.. the entire year I wanted to make friends with the kid, but I just didn't know how to go about it..

I don't relate to the failing part (mostly), but I was usually the English teacher's favorite student. Even in this last semester when I took a college course, the instructor said, "Oh, he's so smart."

I think that is not surprising, I have always been on good terms with teachers because I couldn't discuss things with my peers since they didn't give a damn about anything, so I "talked" through my writing with the teachers and especially language, sociology, history teachers seems to like it.

I have always been open to discussion, but I never start a talk because of some sort of trauma (there is so much to say, that I would be talking for longer than I should). Thus my only way to express my opinion was through writing (or talking if someone asked, but this situation is pretty uncommon, unfortunately) and since I do it most of the time in school time, it is not surprising that some teachers have taken liking of me.

That is natural, what else could a teacher ask, if not for a student who shows strong opinion, which may be interpreted as interest, in what they are teaching?

I believe grades have nothing to do with that, but my opinion might be biased, since I have never had any problems with my marks... Summing all my marks and dividing by the number of subjects would probably result in a B (?*) most of the time.

Well, I may be lucky because my school is not so strict about homework, so there is actually no problem if you do not do anything besides the tests and one or two bimester projects... Meaning that if you do only the tests you probably will score C or B plus these projects (summing to A). This would be perfect, if you were not held a class for being absent 25% of your stipulated school time.

__________

*In my country scoring is from 0 to 10, where 6 is average, I am not sure about this E, D, C, B, A stuff, but I am guessing that B is from 8 to 9 or 8,5 to 9 and A is greater than 9.
