Apparently Atari is now trying to make a new game system. The Atari CEO did confirm that they are working on it at E3.

I'm interested to see where this goes.

Hyperkin is also making the retron 77 an atari 2600 emulator that takes carts, controllers and connects via HDMI.

Unsure if they are building it on 2600 or 7800. If 7800 you would be able to play games from both systems, minus a couple of games.
