My mom put me through some piano training when I was a kid. As a teen I learned the guitar on my own, by listening and playing my dad's acoustic. The revealing moment was deducing the opening riff from Battery by Metallica. First to piano, then to guitar. Since then, I became the awkward poetic type, and for a summer (or two?) had a garage band. I'd compose and present the songs, have the lyrics in a secret box and wish I wasn't so afraid of singing. I'd name the songs and parts with random names like "coffee machine" = 8x"boat" 2x"droppu" etc... Had another band in later years with me confident enough to do vocals (with lyrics dripping of overly conceptual-yet-melancholic self-analyzing). It didn't go anywhere...
Aaaanyway, to skip back to the range of the topic:
-Keyboards (not too good)
-Guitar (not too good)
-Vocals (not too good)
Of these, I'd say the vocals would be an area I could realistically (with some leaps of faith) have a shot.
I've always (excluding the piano training) played by ear, and consider my tonal hearing (if there is such a term) more accurate than most. I also seem to recall musical patterns that I've "internalized" (rhythmic and melodic) very accurately, once I get the pattern going. The difference compared to say, recalling what I did last week is a huge one.
I also have this condition where there's _constantly_ something playing in my head. Not that it bothers me usually. I pick up new riffs for my wish-to-be-true one man project from there.
--Edit: actually it wasn't Battery, but Sanitarium.
