Another career change...

I recently had to leave work after a cancer diagnosis.

I have recovered now and am looking for something new. I have bounced around several careers that really did not fit with an INTP, I also studied in several university programs but didn't finish, so i don't really have any experience or education that goes towards most of the fields typically associated with INTP's. I am 30 now and also have a wife and two kids to think about.

Does anyone know of any INTP careers that are easy to jump into and don't require a large investment in education?

You could've been more specific. Nobody can help you if you don't say what those careers and university programs were, and what you're good at or find interesting.

I married at 21 and by 25 had two kids, so, I can relate (to this part anyway, not the cancer, though I've had my own run-ins with the medical field). Anyway, I started tutoring math and science at local high schools and colleges and taught part-time at local community colleges. It didn't get me rich, but it paid the bills.

Thanks all for the replies. Research / tutoring might be areas to look into more. As for tact, I have been accused of not having it myself more than once.

My previous careers were in the military, the fire dept, EMS and law enforcement. I was successful in all of them up to a point, but had problems with the rigid adherence to policy and the strict hierarchy, as well as I found them somewhat lacking in intellectual challenge. More "thinking on your feet" than analytical problem solving. BTW, mooning a senior military officer is not conducive to career advancement in the armed forces.

In Uni I studied poli sci, psych, international relations, statistics, sociology and then started with some of the physical sciences...nothing really stuck and then a "surprise" pregnancy made it necessary for me to get a steady paying job.

I'm tempted to push you back toward the international relations/military science/computer science/criminal justice/forensics direction so that you can develop a skillset to get a job with the CIA or equivalent... (Although I can't believe I typed "criminal justice" without throwing up in my mouth a little, given the criminal justice majors [<--people] and programs/departments I'm familiar with).

That's another really interesting option, thanks for the info doc. We seem to know the same people/types of people in the crim justice realm, which has kinda scared me off that path before but you have brought up the point that there are many options within that field. I'll look into it to see if there are options that are bound less stringently to policy/procedures.
