This is just one of the countless of irrelevant bits and chips the media generates around him. I used to think it was just nothing interesting happening at all to report. But no! There are plenty of useless wastes of air walking around who actually care about what this man's underwear size is.

people pay attention to stuff like that (along with celebrity gossip) for the same reason people like soap operas. people are just generally interested in the activities of other people. i, for one, don't understand why. unless the guy brings peace to the middle east or completely converts us to green energy, i don't know why people want to know, but i don't think its ever going to change, so i've just become numb to it (i'm still not even sure who jon and kate are... why are they famous?)

He's knew.Thats all there is to it. And after a while he won't be knew any more and his coverage will dwindle to a reasonable amount for a US president. And while I agree the amount of focus on pointless crap like the fashion trends of the first family is way over reported(there shouldn't be any at all) as long as I stay out of celebrity and fashion sections on news sites I find most of the stories to be pretty relevent.

It's the women who are into this stuff. I looked up the results in a lot of the swing states that McCain had to win in order to pull off a victory and in pretty much every swing state McCain had a slight majority in male votes. However, in the female demographic, Obama carried about 60% of their vote in some key swing states.

It's probably more of an F thing than an S thing... or maybe an SF thing.

Over here, there isn't much coverage of foreign presidents, but yes, it's essentially novelty: tabloid news isn't interested in Obama specifically, it's interested in whatever's new and exploitable enough to spin headline after headline around. Here, they're salivating over politics and the recent local elections: even the English test that leaked a week ago is old at this point. It's also the case that Obama practically draws cameras to him: he has that sort of charismatic personality. *shrug*

I don't see why everyone keeps calling Obama the first black president. While there are some pejorative meanings attached to it, I think Obama fits the definition of mulatto much better (m-w.com):

1 : the first-generation offspring of a black person and a white person
2 : a person of mixed white and black ancestry

Getting back to the OP.

I don't really follow Obama's presidency any more than any other president. I don't trust Obama much because his words don't match up to his actions (in my humble perception). I don't much trust other politicians for the same reason.

Living like a celebrity and going out on dates at the taxpayer's expense is not something that I think any American president should do (especially in a recession!) Like other members have posted, much of Obama's presidency is surrounded by hype and people fighting to get first in line for Obama's attention.

Just my humble opinion though.
