Hello everyone. This is my second post here on the forum. Prior to this I started a thread to inquire about INTP and ISTP differences, as I thought that I was one of these two types. However, I would like for you to ignore any assumptions made based on that thread and try to type me to the best of your ability using the information below. I think that I am an INxx type, but do not allow this to limit you in your response. Please read the entire post before formulating a response and let me know if you need more information. Thank you!

  • I love alone time, but eventually I need to get out and converse with friends in a calm environment.
  • I am not comfortable in large groups, though in some group settings I can give the illusion of comfort.
  • When I do talk to people, I prefer to discuss topics such as philosophy and politics.
  • I can be quite animated and I enjoy joking around, but only when I am comfortable with those around me.
  • When talking to people, I refrain from saying things that might offend them or create an awkward situation unless they give me permission to do so.
  • I strive to create harmony in my social environment. Conflict is very uncomfortable to me.
  • I have been described as emotionally sensitive, especially by my ISTP father.
  • I am very sensitive to the words and actions of others, and I can easily be hurt by a joke if it is told under the right circumstances.
  • I become upset when I am criticized by those I am close to, like my father. Criticism is easier to take objectively when it is given by someone I do not know.
  • Generally, the emotions of others annoy me, although I mask my annoyance well.
  • I am a rather emotional person and I have very deep feelings that I often do not understand.
  • I am a logical person, and I like things to be defined based on a consistent system of objective rules.
  • I hate being proven wrong about intellectual issues or not knowing something that someone else knows.
  • I wish that I could be blunt and cold with others, but I can never bring myself to do it.
  • Despite my nonchalant appearance, I harbor a great distrust of other people. This might be a learned behavior.
  • If I spend enough time alone, I become convinced that other people are simply not worth interacting with.
  • I can spend very long periods of time in solitude, though it probably isn't good for me.
  • I desire a deeper connection with others where I can discuss the complex web of thoughts and feelings I have amassed over the years.
  • I am very empathetic towards small animals and I have been known to cry upon seeing an animal in pain.
  • I am uncomfortable expressing deep emotions, and there is no one with whom I am completely open.
  • I usually smile and/or laugh a lot when interacting with others.
  • My primary concern does not lie in other people. I am first and foremost concerned with understanding and improving myself.
  • I appear cold and unemotional in social settings until I am spoken to. The moment I am spoken to, it is immediately obvious to others that I am quite friendly and cordial.
  • The cold outward appearance mentioned above is partially due to the fact that large groups of people overwhelm my senses.
  • Once I am comfortable in a social situation (which can take some time), I have no problem approaching new people and starting conversations.
  • I am very prone to depression and frequently switch from a state of being unusually energetic to one of being utterly hopeless.
  • I feel very vulnerable when I let people know negative personal details about myself.
  • I will oftentimes find myself analyzing information before I even realize what I am doing. It is as if it occurs subconsciously. I snap out of this state pretty quickly, but not before drawing quick conclusions or parallels with regard to the information I was analyzing.
  • I am described as being very intelligent.
  • I have been told by my father that I sometimes let my emotions control me rather than controlling them.
  • I am interested in gaining knowledge. I like to research different topics and to develop new skills.
  • I like to read. When I was younger fiction interested me most, but the majority of my reading nowadays consists of nonfiction, due to my desire to learn.
  • Technology, particularly computers, has been of interest to me since I was a small child. I also enjoy scientific topics such as chemistry and, to a lesser extent, biology.
  • I occasionally enjoy computer programming and hacking.
  • I enjoy playing guitar and I have a slight desire to write my own music, though I haven't gotten around to it yet.
  • My musical taste is rather dark and complex.
  • I have a general dislike of authority and being told what to do.
  • I have a pretty bad memory. Certain things I recall and certain things I do not, and I cannot control what I do and do not remember.
  • I am not detail-oriented, and I often miss things that are right in front of me.
  • My spatial skills are poor, although I enjoy engaging in athletic endeavors with friends.
  • I have been described as absent-minded.
  • I enjoy making sure that things are organized and neat.
  • I procrastinate more than I ought to.
  • I often think about how much better my house would look if it were well-organized.
  • I take care to ensure that I dress well and that I am well-groomed before I go out.
  • I take pride in having an acceptable physical appearance.
  • My clothing style is generally simplistic and minimal, consisting of solid-color t-shirts and jeans or sweatpants.
  • I do not like having things thrown on me at the last minute. If a stressful event is coming up, I better be informed of it beforehand or I will get very upset.
  • I don't enjoy being rigidly scheduled, but I do like knowing what is going to happen in the future so that I can prepare for it.
  • I cannot stand having a busy schedule. I must be alone with my thoughts for a certain amount of time.
  • I have always had a knack for writing and I am probably a little better at English than I am at math, though I find English terribly boring and would rather do math, science, or even Spanish.
  • Math is quite enjoyable to me, especially when it can be applied to scientific pursuits such as chemistry.
  • I enjoy weightlifting/working out.
  • I am perhaps too cautious.
  • I enjoy sports when I can play them for fun rather than being pushed to win.
  • I enjoy getting lost in the world of a video game, although I end up feeling like I wasted my time afterwards.
  • While I have a vague idea of my preferred career path (science), I do not have any specifics in place aside from the fact that I wish to enter the military.
  • I tend to consume too much caffeine and overindulge in sensory activities, or I forgo these things completely.

Also, here are a few extra traits I forgot to add to the original list:

  • I tend to be pessimistic and critical.
  • I look down upon many people because I think they lack intelligence.
  • I can be cold and terse, but it is usually only when I am in a stressful situation.

INFJ
ISFJ.

I thought INFJ when I read the post earlier, was too busy to reply though, I got a secret project that I'm busy with ;)

Why I think INFJ -

Thinking folk aren't so noticeably emotionally sensitive that others comment...
-I get the opposite reaction from people, so much so that I have to fake feeling so certain others don't get the wrong impression of me
This is an example of what makes me pretty sure you're a feeler:

  • When talking to people, I refrain from saying things that might offend them or create an awkward situation unless they give me permission to do so.

Because of Ti, INFJs tend to have a strong intellectual side (hence why my friend is one).
They might become interested in philosophy, religion, science and an endless amount of other things, although they are stronger at humanities than sciences as you described yourself.
Because of Ti, I can imagine how it could be possible to mistype as INTP.
Also, I don't think you're a sensor, since some things you mention, like music writing and computer programming/hacking, strike me as intuitive.

-INFJ have a cold austere outer shell and are squishy in the middle.
-INFJ like people but simultaneously don't apparently.
-INFJ prefer order, but they are not always ordered
-INFJ are so damn contradictory, the #1 hardest type to type.
INFJ, mashup type, strikes me as borderline T/F and J/P

INFJ is very possible, but what made you think of ISFJ?

I agree with you except for the above text, which I have made bold for clarification. I certainly didn't mean to give the impression that I am better at humanities than science. I am simply a bit better at English than I am at math. In fact, I'm not too great at history (mostly because I never studied or listened in history class :o), but I have developed quite an interest in it lately and I am attempting to teach myself. On the whole, I'd say I'm better at science than anything else. I probably should've added that to my list though.

Because of Ti, I can imagine how it could be possible to mistype as INTP.

I confuse myself with all my contradictions :D. This certainly seems like me, though I do have to wonder why a feeling type would become so heavily interested in computers and science. Thank you for the in-depth reply!

INFJ sounds a bit like me, and it would explain why I am so confused about my type. I'd still like to hear the replies of others, as I'm not completely convinced yet, but I am leaning towards INFJ with well-developed Ti at the moment. Thank you for your in-depth reply.

ISFJ does not seem right. Many of my traits are clearly intuitive and I have a dislike of authority, which is absolutely not an ISFJ trait. ISFJs are not known for being particularly intellectual either.

That's very interesting. My ISTP father and I think in much the same way, but he is more practical and less inclined to allow emotions to get the better of him in stressful situations. We're definitely similar but there are major differences between us as well.

Would you mind laying out your reasoning for including ISFJ as one of my possible types? I disagree with you, but I would still like to see your logic. :)

This is prolly going to be an unsatisfactory answer. I can't remember my thought process from 2 min ago let alone hours, so sorry in advanced.

I know you are an introvert because you don't talk about things, but yourself. You could have said something like "I have a collection of anime figures" but you didn't because the subjective interpretation of the way you perceive the world is more important to you than the things in it and the engagement with those things.

I know you are a feeler, and a strong one, because you value unity and desire to put on a happy face rather than tell the curt truth.

I cannot remember my thought process for thinking you are a J.

Given the first two distinctions, what is left is considering if you have more Fi or Fe. given that your focus is on the unity of the group rather than your own personal feelings, its clear you use Fe instead of Fi.

So we have narrowed down your type to two different types: ISFJ and INFJ.

We can eliminate INFJ pretty much immediately because there is no focus on improving humanity as a whole. This is based on the profile of an INFJ and isn't specific any cognitive function or dichotomy.

This is more or less how I arrived at the conclusion that you are ISFJ.

If I am a feeler, I don't think I am a strong one. My interest in science is rather strong, and I enjoy solving problems logically. Aside from that I am blunt around friends with whom I am comfortable, and I probably should've added that to the list :D.

I agree with your premise that I do not focus on humanity as a whole, but I don't really focus on humanity at all except when I am interacting with others (which is rare, as I am fairly reclusive). The only improvement of humanity I would likely partake in would be indirect, as in inventions or scientific advancement.

@Cagitant,

I didn't see a damn thing about the world as a whole.

Not all INFJs want to save humanity/the animals, just as not all INTPs are obsessed with physics (most of us are though. Just mentioning 'quantum entanglement' will get most of us here excited).

Anyway, Enigma128.

You know yourself better than anyone here could ;)
-All we can judge you from is the scant evidence provided by the wall of text above, which is ultimately a self-report (therefore likely biased).

-I'm not sure that you are an INTP, though, FWIW.

Read up more about the types and try to identify your strongest function.
-Think about what function you lead with.

This site might help to explain the concept of cognitive functions:
http://www.cognitiveprocesses.com/Cognitive-Functions/index.cfm

Try to be objective and honest with yourself.
View yourself through the eyes of others.
Take a step back from yourself and view your habits and behavioural patterns.

Ask yourself:
What are your thought processes?
Do you live in the real world or inside your head?
How do you interact with others?
What are your motivations? (if INFJ you might want to help others)

Anyway, good luck in identifying your type

Nearly all of these I can relate to myself. If you are young, about 18 you are most probably intp. If you are 30, well... things can get complicated then. Dont have time for detail analysis

@Cogitant, thank you for another helpful reply. I am debating about whether I am an INTP or an INFJ. I am quite familiar with the cognitive functions and I have studied MBTI for a couple of years now, which makes it all the more frustrating that I'm unsure of my type. As to the questions you posed, I will go ahead and answer them here for the sake of discussion.

What are your thought processes?
Do you live in the real world or inside your head?
How do you interact with others?
What are your motivations? (if INFJ you might want to help others)
1.) While I am a naturally introspective person, I've always had trouble identifying my thought processes in terms of cognitive functions. For the time being I will leave this unanswered.

2.) I live almost exclusively in my head :p.

3.) Generally I am cordial and polite when interacting with others, but I don't connect with most people very well. I don't usually go out of my way to place myself in social situations and I have asocial tendencies. When I am under a lot of stress I am blunt, cold, and unbending (perhaps due to shadow functions).

4.) My primary motivation is to understand and improve myself. I want to be at peace with myself and to find a purpose in life. I do not generally set goals that are based around other people. I like to work with things rather than people.

@Manipulator, thank you for your reply. I have a theory that sounds a lot like what you are proposing. I am a good bit younger than thirty, so I suppose by this theory it is possible that I am an immature INTP. I know you don't have time for an in-depth analysis, but if you get the chance would you mind giving me some insight into why a less mature INTP would be so emotionally sensitive? I feel almost like a mix of INTP and INFJ .

Just cuz I know what it feels like to be misunderstood:

If I am ISTP, I am prolly one of the most sympathetic ISTP's you will ever meet.

You've been through trauma, that is clear to me. IDK if you feel "forced" to act a certain way, but you probably are. That makes giving your type difficult.

Look into self discovery, that is the only way you will truely get to know yourself and become the person you are supposed to be.

I've gone from INTJ to INTP to ISFP to now ISTP.

Even if MBTI doesn't tell you who you are, keep trying to find yourself.

Hmm. What gave you that idea? You're certainly not wrong. To put it simply, I had quite a hard time with life in general up until last year. Thankfully I am in a better place now, but the effects of the trauma I've suffered have yet to pass. I somehow doubt they ever will. I definitely feel forced to act a certain way, and I think that it is due in part to a fear of being let down by others. Thank you very much for your help. I will certainly be looking into other methods of self-discovery aside from the MBTI.

I know because I have a personal bias that tells me so.

I don't know if I'd consider lists an INTP thing. All of the J types love them :p.

Really? If an INTP who is considering either ISTP or INTP, I'd say it's more probable that the INTP would formulate a list rather than an ISTP. The ISTPs I know would just write a huge paragraph and hope someone would help. We are, after all, choosing from a type with P, not J here.
