Adding IRC to the forum?

I've noticed that the chat box which is currently set up on the forum is dead most of the time, while the irc channel to the forum is constantly active.

Do you think the forum chat box could be replaced with an irc widget? A lot of members probably don't know about the irc - and future members would have to dig through old threads just to find the address to it. Implementing it on the forum would make for easy access. It also means members wouldn't have to go searching for a client themselves as one could be provided.

I was experimenting a little on my own and created a mibbit widget here to sorta give an example.

Sure. the Chat can easily go if something better replaces it. Still, someone would have to write the link that goes on the navbar. An instance for vBulletin was referenced in the Son of Navbar thread. And create the widget if yours wasn't sufficient --- though it seems fine. Few of the admins are coders.

Also, since I know little of IRC, where would it run from ? Our servers or some others ? I assume the admins could give every help if you had some code that needed to be input; if you PMed Ragnar with anything specific he would have the best ability to change files, upload stuff etc..

There is no need to worry about anything server-related; it's all taken care of. The widget is hosted via mibbit, an irc client, and is free. Other forums such as the infjs use this same widget.

Inserting this coding is all that's needed:

I'm not sure how vBulletin's control panel operates, or how new pages could be generated though. ^^; I think perhaps Jesin may know how, or yes, Ragnar.

But if you would like to use this one, I can give you the password to the widget's settings. From there, you could change the password so that I no longer have access to it.

On the admin panel, one goes to Styles & Templates/Style Manager; selects Edit Templates; then chooses the file to edit. Naturally, it's the navbar for the links above, but that code may not be correct for navbar links... And I would need guidance from them for generating pages. Alternatively vbulletin.org might have some person who knows. If they sort this out, I'll be grateful for the password.

Still, it's mostly a question of the link: html doesn't fit into vBulletin that easily. So I'll wait for J. or O. to advise.

The code above is meant to create a box for the chat to fit inside the forum, however a direct link could easily be added to the navbar instead. The link being:

I think there actually is a nice advantage to opening it in a window of it's own, as it fills the whole page instead of just a small window. But, lol, I'm sorry for all the posts. I will say no more until Jesin/Ogion come here
