151 Pokemon memory test challenge

I posted this in gaming because it only applies to people who have at some point gamed.

I'm interested in how aspects of pokemon are conducive to ease of memorisation. I'm pretty confident that, despite not having picked up a pokemon cartridge in many years, I could still name a good portion of them, and wanna test myself and others.

So, without googling or checking other people's answers, list all the pokemon you can remember in the original 151 (in spoilers you donkeys). Maybe provide some sense of how invested you were in it. Me? I spent long weeks in the bush with nothing to do, having pokemon on gameboy was pretty huge.

Please preserve the order in which you remembered them. Give yourself half hour max.

I'm wondering whether this memorability could be generalised to something useful. Educational games tend to be dry af, maybe they should be fun first and educational second?

I still play pokemon Go today, so I doubt this challenge would be very telling for me to do it.

However; I did sink many many hours into the first 2 generations, so I’d say it would nearly be a given that I’d remember them.

I only played through the 3rd generation (after a 2 year break from pokemon) once though, and I STILL have a hard time remembering them today.

I reckon it is a combination of childhood learning power + time invested that causes the memory ability.

I think the hard part is making an educational game with the addictiveness of crack.

I played Red for way too long. I literally leveled one of every evolutionary stage up to 100 through battle only because I didn't know of the Cinnabar Island glitch. Never traded anything because no one to trade with.

My strategy was to just do a mental walkthrough remembering the basic pokemon associated with each city, and then expand on their evolutions in round 2. Then I briefly tried to name as many of a given type and then cards I remembered from the card game.

I included togepi because it was depicted in the anime. I also noticed that my spelling of names was much better than Hado's, which probably relates to how we store information in our brains differently.

No Pokemon Go et al. Most recently played an emulator like 5 years ago.

I remember a lot of the Emerald 3rd gen as this is the pokemon game I played and finished.

We played pokemon on a software emulator. Gameboy color was a luxury here when I was 7, there was always "that guy" on summer camps who had it and that guy usually made a business of selling play time for outrageous amounts of cash and AA batteries or cred with the bullies.

107 in less than 10 minutes, I know there were a dozen evolutions I can't name.
I realise that most of the names I wrote might be off, I remember names phonetically.

Also Charizard isn't Charlizard? That makes no sense to me.

Seems like I tend to group my memories by the common sound of pronunciation, by elements (water, rock, etc.), by the order I encountered them in-game, visual similarity and by evolutions.

Now that you mention it, it's an obvious pun - which I already knew. That's a new layer to it though, when you type it out like that.

Pokémon was one of those things that as a kid you had to know because everybody else knew it so you had to know about it too because it’s all anyone would ever talk about. I think the creators of the show understood this, hence why every Pokémon says its name (often repeatedly) and the show was padded out with “who’s that Pokémon?” challenges.

There’s been plenty of educational games and cartoons, the former tend to be too focused on being educational and either overwhelm the player with rapidly increasing difficulty or bore the player with excessive repetition. The latter tend to be outcompeted by shows like Pokémon which are more engaging by not being limited to educational subjects, and can you imagine the backlash a government funded cartoon would get if it was even remotely violent or titillating?

I think rather than trying to make educational games it would be better to mod in educational components to already popular games, for example say you had to solve math problems to buy guns in Counterstrike, the expensive the gun the more difficult the problem. When the whole class is buying AWPs every round you increase the difficulty of the problems, after this cycle repeats a few times you’ll find kids going out to learn mathematics on their own to try and get ahead of the meta.

Please indicate whether you played pokemon go, or if you played any other pokemon more recently that a decade ago. That doesn't invalidate your score, it's just something I want to take into account.

Haven't thought of that. As you have mentioned, the Japanese don't distinguish between R and L sounds, but these are always written with "r" as they don't use a character for the alternate sound mode of "r".

I think that Charizard could exist because in Japanese double consonants are pronounced with Gemination, as a single sound (either with a stop or longer syllable), never with a repeated sound. So Charlizard with Japanese syllables would give "Cha rr iz ard" 4 syllables compared to English "Char liz ard" 3 syllables.

Agreed, Charlizard is a bit of a mouthful, there's definitely something to the idea of words/sentences having more consecutive consonants or more syllables as requiring more time to pronounce and being tiresome and undesirable overall. It's also good design practice to interrupt a pattern of "Meleon, Mander, Lizard" with "zard". Not all elements of a pattern have to be used to evoke a specific meaning.


Anyway it would be interesting to make a comparative study of our forum's nicknames taking the same angle.

Not really. It'd be "cha rri zaa d". So it's actually "izard". Another good example is in Dragon Ball Z where all the names are puns. Saiyan = saiyajin (jin/jim=people), saiya=yasai backwards, and yasai means vegetable, which is why they're all named after vegetables (Vegeta). So it's always going to be a thing. It's actually true poetry, not nonsense. Real poetry being an attempt to answer so far unanswered questions by scholars, it's always fun though to discuss and I like the moments where I laugh after realizing one, and it's okay to scoff at foolish attempts to decipher what has already been known for ages. I've focused my brain power, since I was a wee lad, on the impossible. I also tried to learn Japanese since then although, admittedly, I'm still not fluent but it's fun to learn and see connections through, say, languages which could piece together how the world is and works. I started off studying Asian languages but was also into science or natural philosophy, so don't think my interpretation is too far off the mark. I still need to memorize about 1500 kanji to master or perfect it.

I don't tend to pay detail attention to names, so usually I have a general idea of how something is spelled. I recognize names by their shapes, so that I don't have to read the entire word, I can just recognize it and finish reading the sentence without reading it letter by letter.

I played a lot on the black/ white gameboy and pokemon stadium on n64. It's like 17 years ago. I tried getting into pokemon 10 years later, but having like 4 moves with no strategy or complexity at all didn't really appeal to me

Eh, the main story and playthrough isn’t complex at all. But if you ever want to play against humans it is a bit more complex.

No items
Pokemon are seperated into tiers so it’s not just legendaries stomping around all the time
Double battles / singles
Teams of three out of six, or just all six
Held items / abilities matter
EV investment
The four move limit really constrains your options so it’s a bit hard to have an answer for everything



To Pokemon’s credit, in their last few games this IS the endgame. A battle palace where you face AIs using human strategies. Pretty tough when you just cant brute force your way through with levels.

Obviously, I only put d just to see but it's basically correct. If you translate it it's just d or "duh" sound and in Japanese it's "do". So it's "cha rri zaa do", zaa could also be zar but in Japanese it's usually spelled with two a's. There's no point trying to manipulate it so people can "notice" something might not be right and try to come to conclusions hoping it means they're smarter. So it doesn't mean I didn't know that or was merely hiding information. On the other hand during spoken language syllables that end in vowels have a "whisper" effect where the ending of a word or word at the end of a sentence or between words that vowel may not be pronounced so it sounds "silent". So it's just a way of trying to make the "do" sound as close to possible as the English sound which is just a d without the o at the end.

It basically made no sense whatsoever even if you fully intended to play it or not.

That's what Ni is, as it's connected to Se. When you breathe, you subconsciously begin to start to pick up on detail transmitted through the air. If you go further into it, you'll see that people get mad if they don't get what they want from other people. So it makes perfect sense, and you start to get aggravated if it isn't how you expect, like new Pokémon getting released and being disappointed in the designs. Feel free to post again if I didn't answer your question, I'll try to accommodate for it. If that doesn't work maybe we can finally move on to the next thing, as it's usually you guys who make the threads and I just read. If not, I can compensate by posting again. Before that, I might actually play as I have mastered all the Pokémon, or used to back then, pretty much proving this is a weird Si exercised designed as some N game.
