They fill a niche that apparently needs no improvement. Same goes for the alligators and the coelacanth.

Interestingly spiders never seemed to join the evolutionary size race. A few years ago they found some fossils that looked to be giant spiders, and at the same time somebody was filming an animated series on dinosaurs and such. So they included the giant spiders in it as it made for good animations, even though they later discovered the fossil wasn't a spider. Too late to change.
