I think Elon's government aerospace contracts came with terms, whether he likes it or not he's an asset of the US government now, hence his involvement in Ukraine providing secure communications via Starlink which has really hurt the Russian war effort.

ive given a lot of thought to the origins of the culture wars and the radical-progressivist movements we've seen the last decade or so, but i dont think this is it

first of all, the graphs with the "spikes" dont really show spikes, but rather exponential growth - which is what you would expect from meme-type dynamics that ideas and cultural trends often follow.

secondly, showing the growth of certain ideas doesnt prove anything - it just shows there was some change at some point. Nothing wrong with conspiracy theories to explain things - unless they are provided with zero evidence and some comparisons to competing explanations.

another big underlying problem is that these people think there's some powerful geniuses with grand plans behind the scenes, manipulating the world as they see fit. Reality is that the people behind the scenes are mostly dumbfuck average-Joes who are just reacting to circumstances just like everyone else. They have no plan, they just try to exploit whatever shifts and dynamics are taking place in the world. There are of course certain individuals, like Soros or whatever, who are resourceful people who try to fund specific things to push things in certain directions, but their activities are happening mostly in broad daylight, are pretty obvious, are also mostly reactions to existing dynamics, and are not particularly genius.

if one goes back to the 60s, the origins of the progressivist ideas that re-emerged in their contemporary form recently, one can see how much randomness there is at play with cultural movements. You had mostly academic thinkers like Marcuse who came up with these ideas and disseminated them to the younger generation via academia, but they didn't catch on just on the merit of the ideas themselves - you probably needed extra factors like the invention of LSD, the invention of pop-rock music, the vietnam war, and so on.

same today - you cant really engineer a movement like this without also engineering the various events that facilitated its spread; the anti-capitalist (i.e. leftist) sentiments that emerged after the 2008 financial crash, the growth of social media, the increase in humanities-students in higher education, and so on
