I think the social status perceived is closely correlated with one's own values. The way you look at other people is how you look at yourself. So if you don't think it is of value to be a CEO, then you do not feel bad for not being a CEO. Unfortunately it is impractical if not irrational not to value anything at all, so your perceived social status will just depend on different values. So some form of social status will probably always affect you, even if you happen to value not valuing social status.

Now of course the more you are exposed to other values and judged, the harder it potentially gets to separate yourself from those values, and the nightmare is of course that you will one day wake up to realize that you are no different from anyone else.

So I care when my values are in play.

To me, a social status is a measurement of expectations. So I expect a professor to be knowledgeable, intelligent and mature. It's like a cover of a book really. The lower the social status, the lower/less expectations.

I don't really care about my own social status though. Or anyone's really. In a sense that I try to go "up" in rankings or whatnot. It's an indicator, not a goal.

caring about social status in the power-relational/hierarchical/prestige sense is deeply wrong. it's infinitesimally close to dishonesty and evil.

What matters is you get input (the availability for your desires and needs to be satisfied). Everyone needs this to some extent. To the extent you don't need it, it doesn't matter.

^agreed.

So is the amount of input space one has access to part of a category of "social status", the pursuit of which might involve greed and selfishness?

This is a rather painful lesson for my journey for business and independence. You need connections and social status if you want to succeed. No matter how good you are, you need other people to know that and make use of your service and/or products. You also need to know people who are honest enough to rationally show you that what you're doing won't fly.

However, I believe that any gained social status should simply be a side effect of being really skilled and be born out of trust. For example, it's better to become a director because you're really good at guiding others rather than because you slept with the CEO's daughter.

There are various categories. One might be one's practical social status which gives one the ability to go about daily tasks. Then there is a newly recognized social status which creates a change and affects one's ego.

An example is being arrested for a crime and being on TV. Another is going on stage and receiving a Nobel prize. Others, milder, are being promoted at work or getting a divorce.
