The more I play it the less I like it, which is a shame, you could say it's the abused love-child of Bioshock and Metro 2033, there's enormous potential but ultimately it's let down by some truly moronic design choices. It's almost like there was two designers working on this, one who really knew what he was doing, and another who has never played an FPS in his life.

I've just got through one terribly cliched "save the girl" section in which I had to chase her through the level as she's being dragged away by the baddies, and by the end of it I wanted to shoot her. She only got captured in the first place by insisting that we split up, throughout the entire chase she's constantly telling me to hurry up, at one point she's inexplicably climbing down a ladder (at which point I assumed she had freed herself, but either she got recaptured again or was being very cooperative with her captors) and the actual route they take through the level makes no goddamn sense, about halfway through the chase I'm beginning to wonder if they know where they're taking her. But wait it gets better, just before the chase there's a message from assumedly my future self that says "don't trust her" so I'm not exactly keen to rescue her from the start, she's obviously going to betray me later, and during the chase there's these guys with miniguns who can take huge amounts of damage, are immune to all my special abilities and did I mention they have miniguns?

If I go too slow I lose her and it's an auto fail (is that ever a good idea?) so I have to charge headlong into these guys with miniguns, who take at least, AT LEAST, 10sec of fire from my minigun before they die, and did I mention they're immune to my special abilities so that's the only way to kill them, furthermore I can't take cover and wait for them to reload because they have a 200 round ammunition box, that's 40sec of continuous firing, and they're not alone either, so let's do the math if I wait it out, that's 40sec, plus 10sec to take him out, another 5sec to take out the other two, and if I stop for more than 60sec it's game over so that leaves me a margin of 5sec to clear and cross about a room and a half, oh and there's collectables dodads, health kits and ammunition, all of which has to be picked up by actually looking at it and holding X.

I got through that section by expending all my health kits, almost all my ammunition, and then almost immediately thereafter I have to defend this dumb bitch as literal waves of yet more generic bad guys spawn all around me, and what's really insulting is how obvious their spawning is, in Borderlands that was forgivable but in such a heavily scripted rail shooter scenario that's just fucking lazy.

Which is not to say this is a bad game, as bad as these parts are the rest of it is pretty damn good, the puzzles are genuinely innovative (the first time), the mood is genuinely creepy, the story is genuinely interesting, and as much as I'm pissed off by parts I'm going to play it through to the end for those reasons.

Then probably never play it again.
