I've never bought anything vocaloid related but I keep an eye on what's going on with this because y'know it's my sorta thing and frankly I think if they're trying to take over the world they're going about it all wrong. Hatsune Miku was the first vocaloid program and is without a doubt the most famous, but what's interesting about this is that because she's the oldest (by release date) her voice is the most synthetic and yet she's still the most famous.

I think people prefer the original because it best plays into the fantasy, like the girls in the band there's this unconscious fantasy that they're singing directly to their audience, that when you're sitting on the bus with your headphones on she's actually singing to you. Of course this is utterly ridiculous and all but the most obsessive fans know that for sure but with Miku it's different, everyone can download their own copy, it doesn't matter if she's singing to everyone because everyone can have their own Miku, the fact that she's artificial is part of the appeal.

Even the personality of the character varies with every interpretation, it's like how religious people all have their own personal relationship with god and despite knowing how subjective their perspectives are they still declare their god is the same god everyone else believes in, unless of course it's a rival faith.

Hatsune Miku is a pagan goddess of the digital age.

I think we're going to see more of these, not just vocaloids either, political parties might catch on to the idea that rather than having human figureheads they could use a carefully characterised mascot to the same effect, maybe even several mascots to appeal to different demographics.

Then again fast food establishments like McDonald's used to do this and have since grown out of it, but I'd blame that on an over-protective intellectual property mindset, a major part of Hatsune Miku's success has been allowing fans to do whatever they want with the character insofar as they're not making money from it without paying the requisite royalties. This open business model creates a powerful feedback loop of increasing value, people who produce/sell or just imitate or comment on vocaloid stuff increase its notoriety which in turn encourages more people to become involved.

Chances are I've just increased her fame by another dozen or so people :phear:

Hatsune Miku should lead the Necrons so that the grimdark future would be more kawaii. :)

Anyways, what hit me in that vid is that they even have to control their performer's relationships so as to continue to appease the fans and rake in money. That's messed up. Personal relationships aren't properties that a boss owns.

Well, y'see... fantasy is the domain of religion.

Fantasy is intimately related to religion, because it lies at the base of it. Believing there is a personal god that cares specifically for you is not different from praying to a specific Saint whose values you resonate with, or idolizing a certain popstar, fictional or real. Even real-life popstars like Michael Jackson or Lady Gaga are idolized; that is to say, in the mind of fans they are conceptually separated from their actual selves, and treated as the conglomerate of their symbolic perfection. Just like these single girls.

It's a very typical phenomenon and it's very entrancing indeed. It is the same Japanese phenomenon that I describe in this thread; Japan's fixation with the Anima. You see the personal intimacy with the idol, and their talking-to-you-directly effect, conveyed in songs like this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScSW9C3DF18

The Japanese have idolized the Anima for centuries. This is not a new occurence. Before, it was most seen in Geishas. Notice how Geishas wear masks, or very thick white makeup. This is both to hid the actual face of the girl (because the real girl herself is not relevant, just her symbol) and to 'purify' the appearance of the girl by removing any imperfections. The Geisha plays an archetypal role in the mind of the male, as a nymph; pure, perfect and sexy.

Not all cultures have an equivalent of this. Japan stands exceptionally pronounced in this idolization of the Perfect Woman, or Yamato Nadeshiko.

@Taking over the world - I'm assuming this was satire, err, but in case it wasn't... This idolization isn't something that can do anything more than start a new religion. And we have plenty of religions already. If powers are at bay controlling Japan from the shadows, then they may already have the whole world too, for all we know -- but appeals to the Anima isn't going to be the way they'd control whole planet. Other religions, like the Abrahamic ones, strongly lack prominent Anima figures and would not be persuaded by Miku Mind Control. =P

Well at least in our country there's a strong devotion to Mary, Mother of Jesus but it's not at the Miku level though.
