you guys must check this thing out. it's called eureqa. from a number of given data points, it discerns a more and more accurate function so that each y=f(x) (or other stuff, like y=...) using a genetic algorythm.
I wrote a program to write a bunch of data points to a text file using a function (mediumly complicated) and eurequa found the function in 10-15 seconds.
the program was originally developped to find a function that describes the energy in a double-pendulum (they really do seem just random). within a few hours, it had not only done that (average desktop) but had also found newton's second law of motion.
