Academic Future in jeopardy? Ex girlfriend

I'll be brief because we all like brevity.
I'm in college. And I was dating this chick from back home and we went to the same college in Washington DC (by sheer coincidence actually).
Mind you I'm an engineering major and she's a broadcast journalism major.
To make things short I futzed around and my grades suffered. Losing scholarship money that I accrued etc. She and I no longer date and now I'm back home in Minnesota planning to attend the local university.
I'm usually pretty level-headed and calm but I'm at the point where I'm like screw a relationship right now. Now I need to almost start from scratch and hopefully get myself back in position to go to law school or a Ph.D program. Any thoughts? Rebukes? Encouragements?

dont let the grades dip for dates.
if she is insisting to go out, but you NEED to do work, tell her that.
at least you have some alone time to focus on grades now.
I only take them out if i would have spare time during that time.
:/ bummer, i know, but make sure you prioritize the welfare of your future over a risky chance of a relationship.

Ditch the girlfriend concept. Remain casual friends, meet in group socials when you have free time etc. Trust me, you have a looooooooong future ahead of you (although at some stage its going to start feeling short, but I wouldn't worry about that now). Thats if you care about your future as a professional engineer.

The added benefit is that you may start work and meet a really hot geek chick in your line of work and want to be with her a LOT more than what you're probably interested in as this current time.

Don't take this as Biblical in import or anything, but I have noticed, as a journalist since Noah docked the ark, that print journalists tend to have a higher percentage of silent, brooding, torn introverts than the general population, while broadcast journalism tends to attract a higher percentage of braying, assured, "it's all about me" extroverts than the general population. I of course make no value judgment about this in general or your girlfriend in particular. I make note of it because if she's coming across as needing a lot of your attention even with a long-distance college thing going on, this might be the source, and, knowing, you can decide more easily, perhaps, if you want to live with it or not.

Opposites do attract, quite often, but it doesn't always work out on a daily basis....

You do need to focus on school, and you already know that, so I think you know what's best already.

yeah that was kinda the thing. I'm of course an INTP and she's most likely an ESFJ. It was as if she needed all this attention.
