I think it's time to change up my career.

I'm looking at being 30 in a year. I have gotten a two year degree in general liberal arts while playing away my time with booze and general youthfulness. I have gotten a 4 year degree in Literature and Non-Western Philosophy/Psychology/Anthropology (I couldn't decide what to minor in okay?) while being brainy and very very philosophical. I've worked a bit here and there. Mostly in Retail and Technical Support. I got married.

But really all of that has nothing to do with the next stage of my life. It's a common occurance for a person to have at least three major and mutually exclusive careers over the course of their life. I deem it time for my next Career. It is time to move in a new direction.

I was thinking private pilot\sail boat captain. There is a little flight school close to where I live. For the low low cost of around $8000 I could get the training I need to be legit. There is also a little sailing club close by that offers all the courses I need to learn how to sail either on short trips or on long coastal endeavors.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

They are just beginning to crack down on suspicious foreign nationals seeking flight training. With your wholesome background I think you could sneak through.

I thought you were going to have kids. :P

Who said I would be having kids now? Besides, having me never slowed my mother down. She's had 3 mutually exclusive careers before she turned 45. Don't limit me with your archaic notions of maternity.

If you can afford the flight school thing, I say: "Do it!"

Sounds like amazing fun. You can have flying babies too :D

Tell you what, after I get my pilot's liscense I'll fly you around Eastern Europe. Ultimately it's all in preparation for my future career as a terrorist for the Serbian National Front you know.

I'm surprised you found it so cheap....
Gas... the plane... lessons... usually ends up a lot more.

Then, single engine certification I presume?
What kind of job do you anticipate getting?
After all... most people with single engine planes have the license and fly it themselves. The most modest Cessna 150 (which is probably what you'd learn in.. or single engine Piper) is still incredibly expensive before upkeep and fuel.

I don't really get the hostility.
3+ careers or no, kids are going to shake things up.
It seemed in the other thread you were intending to have them soon.

Yeah isn't there a bit more to it than just the pilot's licence (like instrument rating, commercial, ...)?

@Adaire - Perhaps I should have added a ":p" to the end? I didn't intend any hostility with real teeth. Hmmmm....

It's pretty cheap because the place I'm looking at focuses on small private plane pilot licensing. I could go for something more professional but don't want to. One of the great things about the place is that they basically work as a charter. If I want I could rent a plane for personal trips for cheap as a member of the flight club until I've saved up the money to get my own plane. Also, one of the great things about the Pacific Northwest is that there are a number of Charter Agencies and pilots tend to come and go with those mirroring the hunting/fishing tourist ebb and flows. Also, I do know some people along the Gulf Coast that would hire me if I had a license or at least consider hiring me. I know of a few places in Alaska as well. I have lived in a lot of places across the States.

However, mostly I just want to do for the experience of it. I've never actually chosen a career path based on the job market (as evidenced above with the Lit major and Philosophy minor). So I figure I get my license and even if it does turn into a job it could certainly be one hell of a fun hobby.

I thought that perhaps the members here might have some ideas of other "careers" or large endeavors to throw myself into.

Yea I say go for it, even if you end up not liking it any knowledge worth learning is worth knowing, or however that saying goes. But being a pilot sounds amazing traveling is something I often contemplate especially to Japan, I'm tired of Western Civilization. You can also search and find some careers suited for INTP's if that doesn't work out.

I was fortunate to have three mutually exclusive careers before I turned 30 (hard science, music and engineering). Gave me an opportunity to play the field, and allowed me the time to establish myself in my chosen path (software engineering).

The difficulty with changing later in life is you lose a good long honeymoon with your career. That is time you use to

  • Establish a reputation
  • Gain experience
  • Save a lot of money

The last point is worth highlighting. I've successfully invested outside my retirement accounts, but now in my mid 40's I could theoretically retire on what I invested just in my 401k account from work. This is from a mere 15k/year put into the account per IRS requirements.

I'm looking forward to 'retiring' early from my job just before I turn 50, and I'll use the time to follow my own interests (work and otherwise) to a greater degree of freedom and autonomy.

I heard their careers have longevity issues. Wouldn't they need a backup plan?
