Are the INTPs first three functions geared toward a more academic approach? When I say academic, I mean researching and coming up with ideas. This might explain why INTPs can be seen as more intellectual then other types.

I am not saying INTPs are natural professors or should work in academia, but the way the functional stack is set up it almost seems that INTPs go about things in a very "academic" sort of way. Ti processes and analyzes concepts, Ne finds connections and makes theories, and Si stores information and recalls memory from data(history). Fe being the last function is basically the end goal of the INTP which is acceptance of this research(Ti-Ne-Si).

Other types functional stack don't seem like they follow this approach. INTJs for example Ni-Te-Fi seems a lot more like a coming up with an idea and making it a plan of their own execution, kind of like a strategy. Their Se goal desires it to be implemented and used in the environment.

It depends, there are many approaches and sub areas in academia. Most research is button counting in fact - simply gathering more data. My PhD was in that by the way which is one of the reasons I left. Very little academic research is Ti/Ne/Si like you say, a small percentage at the top get to do that work.

The best place IMO for that kind of work now is in software engineering as I've said before. Look at where you easily get space to innovate - in startups and corporations. Got a new idea? Start your own company. Only a rarefied few, in a few fields like Physics and mathematics get that kind of problem space.

Yeah the work of the majority of academia isn't really Ti-Ne-Si type of work, as your basically not dealing with theoretical inquiry but more on publishing research(publish or perish) which fits with more with the INTJ type. I guess what I was trying to say is the academic approach or at least traditionally, not the actual work is theoretical inquiry.

Entrepreneurship or finding a position with that sort of creative autonomy in fields like engineering seem like the right fit for use of Ti-Ne-Si. I think this is why the the INTPs are often labeled as the "Engineers" while INTJs the "Scientists" as in reality it fits more accordingly.
