Research is showing that there are two different kinds of visual abilities.

One of these abilities is the ability to have clear mental imagery, such as that used by an artist. The other is to think spatially, used by scientists and architects.

Here is a website that goes into more detail: http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/mkozhevnlab/?page_id=9

Thoughts?

I definitely lean more towards spatial imagery. I have a hard time generating super crisp images.

Johannes Müller (biologist), once said that his mental picture of a dog was just the letters "D-O-G".

It's hard for me to say which one is more dominant for me. I solve problems both visually and spatially.

According to the diagram on the Harvard site, I think "allocentric spatial visualization" is pretty accurate for me, but it's definitely dependent on the situation.

This is interesting. So just theoretically can you have outstanding object imagery skills and still spatial below-average?
