I have to write a paper for my online cultural anthropology class and I've decided to write it about the culture of INTP forum (lucky all of you). So, in order to get a wider range of views on the subject, I'm going to ask you all some questions.

Keep in mind that these questions are concerning the culture of INTP forum, not INTP people in general, meaning I'm not asking about descriptions of INTP's or for INTP stereotypes (if that were the case I could probably use threads like "you know you're an INTP when" and so forth).

This assignment is due on Friday by midnight (yea, I procrastinated to address the forum until now, but I also thought it was due on Sunday night like all the other assignments for the class always were) so I'd like to keep this thread on topic at least until after Friday. In other words, I'd like it if all replies were addressing just the questions I'm asking in the OP and keep derailing and side conversations to a minimum until after Friday. After that I don't care where people want to take the conversation.

I guess anyone is allowed to answer these questions, but I'm definitely hoping that some of the more senior members will contribute.

So on to the questions:

INTP Forum Culture in General:

1. Do you think that INTP forum culture has any sort of aesthetic?
2. How might you describe humor in INTP forum culture?
3. Does INTP forum culture have any particular values or taboos? What are they and why?
4. Is there any general trend in the musical tastes of INTP forum culture?
5. Which subforum would you say best represents what INTP forum culture is all about?
6. If you could sum up INTP forum culture in one succinct "sound bite" what would you say?
7. Are there any subcultures within the culture of INTP forum?

INTP Forum Cultural Evolution:

1. Is there anyone who has ever posted on the forum that you would say has impacted the culture of the forum significantly or changed it in any significant way? How so?
2. Is there any particular post(s) on the forum that you would say has had a significant impact on (or made a significant change to) INTP forum culture?
3. What might be seen as a "rite of passage" to become part of the culture of INTP forum? eg, what might someone have to do in order to go from being a no-name newbie to being a member of the culture of INTP forum?
4. Has any kind of hierarchy emerged on the forum? On most forums, post count seems to be important - would you say this is a factor in someones status in INTP forum culture? How might 'social mobility' work on INTP forum?

Personal Member Experiences:

1. At what point in your own experience here would you say you were inducted into the INTP forum culture?
2. Does the culture of INTP forum influence your life outside the forum? How so?
3. How do you view the relationships you've established on INTP forum?
4. Feel free to give any other personal views on INTP forum culture.

INTP Forum and Gender, Age, and Race:

1. Do you think there are any particular roles that different sexes, races, or ages take on INTP forum? If so, what are they? (feel free to use others or yourself as examples).
2. Do you think that different sexes, races, or ages are treated (replied do) differently on INTP forum?
3. Do you think that you are treated differently based on your sex, race, or age on INTP forum?
4. Feel free to give any other views concerning sex, race, and age in INTP forum culture.

INTP Forum and Politics, Economics, and Authority:

1. Do you think there is a general political or economic view in INTP forum (about the outside world, eg liberal, conservative, libertarian, socialist etc)?
2. How would you describe the way the INTP forum leadership itself is handled concerning the forum?
3. If INTP forum has any kind of currency for social exchange, what would you say it is?
4. Feel free to give any other views regarding the political, economic, and leadership views you've observed in members of INTP forum.

OK. Coming to you soon.

I was wondering if talking about it in the thread would influence the answers. :-)

I'd say that's a valid point.

I'll see if I get the time to answer these questions later.

I'm not a senior member relative to you guys and I'm kind of a distant person, but I do like answering questions.

INTP Forum Culture in General:

1. Do you think that INTP forum culture has any sort of aesthetic?
You mean does it have its own aesthetic? You can skim through the art threads for that. It looks like the forum confines itself to traditional/classical, well-accepted forms of art, particularly paintings. There are also preferences for photography, the well-known sort and the personal sort.

2. How might you describe humor in INTP forum culture?
Light, feely and friendly? I haven't seen anyone showcasing dry humor except in the form of objectively talking about them in one thread. None of the latter sort of humor is shown in conversation, but that could be because its difficult to express in text. The former is much more easily not miscommunicated.

3. Does INTP forum culture have any particular values or taboos? What are they and why?
Value for being smart, and disvalue for being stupid and being arrogant about it. The forum is open to all morality, it seems. Nobody reacts strongly to moral-related statements, and nobody(the majority) reacts with moral arguments. Other forums have their share of being personally affected by moral-discussions. All attention is towards the means, not the ends.

4. Is there any general trend in the musical tastes of INTP forum culture?
Non-mass-popular ones are promoted.

7. Are there any subcultures within the culture of INTP forum?
The type-focused culture?

INTP Forum Cultural Evolution:

3. What might be seen as a "rite of passage" to become part of the culture of INTP forum? eg, what might someone have to do in order to go from being a no-name newbie to being a member of the culture of INTP forum?
A post outside of your introduction thread..?

Personal Member Experiences:

1. At what point in your own experience here would you say you were inducted into the INTP forum culture?
When I started discussing. "Forum" in INTPforum is at it's core, or any "forum's" core really.

INTP Forum and Politics, Economics, and Authority:

1. Do you think there is a general political or economic view in INTP forum (about the outside world, eg liberal, conservative, libertarian, socialist etc)?
Liberal/Libertarian. As long as its anti-authoritarian. The economic view is divided.

As a whole, I don't think there's enough unity to create a distinct culture.

1. Do you think that INTP forum culture has any sort of aesthetic?

Yes.

2. How might you describe humor in INTP forum culture?

Sardonic.

3. Does INTP forum culture have any particular values or taboos? What are they and why?

Negatory on collective values. Tis a nihilistic wasteland. The expressions of aspirations, hope, solutions, and genuine emotion are generally frowned upon because of immanent solipsism and tacit crab mentality.

4. Is there any general trend in the musical tastes of INTP forum culture?

Weird.

5. Which subforum would you say best represents what INTP forum culture is all about?

Lounge.

6. If you could sum up INTP forum culture in one succinct "sound bite" what would you say?

Goddammit.

7. Are there any subcultures within the culture of INTP forum?

Yes.

Spoiler! Good idea.

1. Do you think that INTP forum culture has any sort of aesthetic?
On the topic of paintings, there seems to be trend of people doing surreal art.

3. Does INTP forum culture have any particular values or taboos? What are they and why?
Correct(ish) spelling and grammar seems to be a norm.
4. Is there any general trend in the musical tastes of INTP forum culture?
I don't think so. These days, everyone listens to completely different music. In a disparate, kind of loosely knit group like this place, there would be even less commonality.
7. Are there any subcultures within the culture of INTP forum?
All the weird role-playing stuff in the 'Arena' or whatever might be a subculture. There are definitely similar people around, but it seems like they don't really organize themselves into little subcultures. I think the lack of subcultures probably is mostly due to the small and distant population here.

3. What might be seen as a "rite of passage" to become part of the culture of INTP forum? eg, what might someone have to do in order to go from being a no-name newbie to being a member of the culture of INTP forum?
I think it's pretty gradual. Eventually, people start to recognize you if you post regularly.

4. Has any kind of hierarchy emerged on the forum? On most forums, post count seems to be important - would you say this is a factor in someones status in INTP forum culture? How might 'social mobility' work on INTP forum?
It's not uncommon for a super noob to start a thread that becomes good or contribute well to a discussion. So yeah, not much hierarchy.

3. How do you view the relationships you've established on INTP forum?
I don't think I've established any relationships.

1. Do you think there are any particular roles that different sexes, races, or ages take on INTP forum? If so, what are they? (feel free to use others or yourself as examples).
The older folk tend to dispense wisdom and advice for the fledgling young people. Everything else is largely irrelevant, considering that it is the internet and basically anonymous.

2. Do you think that different sexes, races, or ages are treated (replied do) differently on INTP forum?
No, it's nearly impossible to determine any of these things about a person on a forum. Also, I think it's fair to say that ideas are usually treated separately from the person who posted them.

2. How would you describe the way the INTP forum leadership itself is handled concerning the forum?
There's a leadership? I have no idea. Whoever runs the place fixes it when it's down, and that's all I know.
3. If INTP forum has any kind of currency for social exchange, what would you say it is?
I can't really imagine people exchanging things here in any way except sharing them to anyone. We don't really exchange anything except ideas n stuff, if nahh meen.

INTP Forum Culture in General:
1. Do you think that INTP forum culture has any sort of aesthetic?

Yes, and I think it is subdued and not overtly cute or bright. It is semi-organized in a way that shows it's only cleaned up when some one feels like it.

2. How might you describe humor in INTP forum culture?

Dry, and generally involving oblique references and word play. Also a fair amount of juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated things.

3. Does INTP forum culture have any particular values or taboos? What are they and why?

The only real taboo is to say that something can not be discussed. Everything is up for debate and to indicate that something is not allowed to be discussed is a quick way to get publicly ridiculed.

4. Is there any general trend in the musical tastes of INTP forum culture?

I don't think so. Generally speaking most musical genres seem to be covered in the music sections. However, there tends to be a common desire to avoid music that is overly popular with the masses. Members are often made fun of for liking pop music if they openly admit it.

Though complexity in the music or something unique about the music seems to be important.

5. Which subforum would you say best represents what INTP forum culture is all about?

The Lounge. There are various subsections that allow for more detailed discussion of specific things but The Lounge is where various ideas are pulled together. You can discuss divergent ideas and allow the discussion to wander to any topic loosely related to the thread. INTPs seem to love making connections and The Lounge topics often allow for the forum populace to connect the most seemingly disconnected ideas. There is a lot of room for free association and intuitive mental leaps. Which is the day to day fodder of this forum.

6. If you could sum up INTP forum culture in one succinct "sound bite" what would you say?

The INTPforum is a loosely connected affiliation of people who are looking for an outlet/inlet to discuss their multitude of varying and often changing interests. It's a great place to go for a refreshing alternative to the usual social interactions that INTPs are often forced into in their daily lives.

7. Are there any subcultures within the culture of INTP forum?

I think so. I think these groups are defined mostly by their interests. For Example: The Scientists, The Artists, and The Pedantic and Argumentative Religion Discussers. Other than that there are the usual small groups of members that for whatever reason have developed friendly relationships.

INTP Forum Cultural Evolution:

1. Is there anyone who has ever posted on the forum that you would say has impacted the culture of the forum significantly or changed it in any significant way? How so?

LoR A.K.A. Loveofreason. As a governing and organizational member of this forum she often encouraged or discouraged attitudes in subtle ways that changed the feel of this forum greatly. I think that when she stopped posting regularly the forum changed in that it no long was as accepting of various points of view. I also think that a lot of members that would have been banned for being bullies/trolling/or generally bad for developing healthy intelligent discussions of topics have been allowed to stay without any real discouragement from being idiots.

.....

I'm sorry that's as far as I've gotten right now.

The report was supposed to be 5-8 pages long. Mine is 12 pages long.

I'll post my report in a couple weeks after grades are in on the off chance my professor runs a program to see if it was plagiarized.

Once again, thanks to the people who gave answers.
