The problem with encyclopedias and wikis is that while all the stuff is more or less easy to understand, it is mostly general information and it is very difficult to discern truth from falsities while reading the entry without having proper knowledge in the field.

90%+ of the general information is correct there, but general information is rarely applicable, it rather serves well to get into the specifics.

While much less specific information there I would risk taking as accurate.

Right. Reading encyclopedias doesnt teach you anything in depth, but I think its a great way to explore new concepts that you haven't heard of before. I think its pretty cool that you can find a topic that interests you and browse through all of the subcategories you didnt even know existed, as opposed to a few subjects an author chooses to write about in depth. Of course its a good idea to study topics further, but for me encyclopedias act as a catalyst to discover them.
